Game Thread Lady Vols at Vanderbilt

When Diamond was getting a lot of minutes earlier in the season and was a TO machine, people were complaining that Holly needed to sit her until she got it together. Now Holly is limiting her minutes more and has a quicker hook and people are complaining that Diamond needs more playing time to work things out. Good grief.

Most posters here have little to no basketball skills or knowledge. All they know they learned on the internet.... :(

Congratulations on the victory. Not exactly "basketball clinic" material, but a win over vandie is always great. :good!:

Beating an unranked cupcake (Massey #60) is always better than losing to an unranked cupcake, but the competition was still an unranked cupcake. This game was very similar to the ones against Alabama and Arkansas. The Vols look good when playing the Blind Sisters of the Poor. Does this necessarily translate into quality basketball against South Carolina? Time will tell.

Soo Steph Sorenson said that Graves looked like a 3 player during shoot around and has a nice stroke.. So when are we going to see that versatility

When Holly stop asking her to post up on the opposite side of Russell and forcing the girls to get it in the Post to her. I think we will see a player that we wish we had at Tennessee when Graves gets to the WNBA. I have a feeling she will end up in New York (she is one of those type of gritty players Lambier likes). We will then wonder why we never saw that from her here! (Coaching will be the final answer)

The issue isn't just Diamond making errors, although her TO's have been horrific, it's her one-on-one, or one-on-four offense, which leaves everyone else standing around and disrupts the offense. It's hard to maintain any offensive flow when you have a ballhog out there. Did we learn nothing from Meghan Simmons? And half the time Diamond doesn't even bother to play defense. How is insisting that she play defense forcing her into a "fraudulent system?"

First we have no offense tell me what offensive system we run? (I'll wait)

Secondly, she plays defense when she has too (as many of the greats do) Taurasi slouches on defense all the time but when you need a stop she locks in.

Odyssey Simms was the same way at Baylor and was allowed to because she had the 6'8" Griner to protect the rim if she gets beat. When we face a team like vandy who's Center is listed at 6'0" but is more like 5'10/5'11" (Webb) Diamond should be able to slouch on defense/play the passing lanes for steals because the 6'6" Russell should be able to slide over to help (Block or contest the shot) and still get back to her man if it is dished off. Baylor won their title that way. Teams became so afraid to challenge Griner that Simms would let players blow by her and run on the outlet because she know if Griner blocked it the pass was hitting her in stride for the lay up. Diamond played the same way at UNC she had McDaniel & McVunga backed there who would contest the shot/get the offensive rebound and find her in transition. We get the offensive rebound and are being told to wait for Russell (or Graves) to get down the coach and give them the ball

One promising aspect of this game is the speed at which Diamond played. She had some plays where she just streaked down the floor (one time it led to a wide open lay-up; another was her highlight at the end of the game and unfortunately, several times, the PGs tea or Draya did not find her). Nonetheless, that kind of play can really open up offensive options for the LVs. I now am convinced that Diamond is only now starting to get healthy. She moved quite differently than in past games. We may yet see a game changing player by season's end.

Jamie as well is clearly getting into the zone. We all underestimated how much of a set-back a broken hand and missing games might have been. Nared and DeShields could be a very dangerous one-two punch down the stretch.

Across the board this game was a definite step in the right direction. I hope the LVs can keep building on this momentum.

Well said.Would like to see a starting lineup of Russell,Nared,DeShields,Cooper and Carter and play them together for 25/30 minutes to see if this would generate some chemistry on this team with the best talent on the floor at the same time.If so ,this team would have a chance to go places far and wide this year.

Dunbar probably wont play and graves will probably start smdh

The starting Lineup should be;

PG-Cooper
SG-Carter
SF-Dunbar
PF-Nared
C-Russell

Run the 4 out 1 in and with the first subs go with;

PG-Cooper
SG-Reynolds
SF-Deshields
PF-Graves
C-Moore

Continue with the 4 out 1 in and have Moore at the high post and graves on the block.

This should be the rotation the rest of the way (until Diamond shows glimpse of herself and then she would replace Dunbar in the starting unit, if I was head coach. (Starting Graves and Russell together is one of our biggest issues and since Holly wont sit Russell in favor of someone else to hopefully light a spark under her that she was the top overall recruit and should be playing like it)
you're kidding about Dunbar right? Not trying to be smart or anything but what makes you the authority on who should start? It seems no one seems to agree on that.

I don't think HW is doing a good job as coach. I think the LV's need a change there.

But just wow to the venomous, vitriolic, hate filled posts in here. HW doesn't like KD bc she's pretty and heterosexual? ...

Some of you people are sickening.

One ignorant person says something incredibly dumb and you put it on everyone! Wow.

Remember, there are many Coaches on this board who are experts on x's and o's and player development. They can also read the minds of the players.

We are truly lucky to have them all sharing their coaching Expertise with us every day.

One thing I've noticed about Geno's system is that he plays his starters 35 minutes or more. I think that is why they play so well in the half court offense. They have played so many minutes together and practiced so much together they know what every player is can do.

Not only this, but when you set the standard with your players of, "Look, I'm only going to play the best player at this position during game time." That creates good competition and less room for the player to slack around.

Then we have to count on Holly to figure out who those best 5 are.

The substitutions according to time on the clock vs. the situation has been a big problem with players getting into the flow.

Geno brought Diana off the bench her freshman year, but she was one the court real soon if UConn did not get off to a fast start. Holly can't be so programmed that she subs at the same point every game no matter what is happening on the court. It just makes no sense.

Holly doesn't know what she's doing. It's not a basketball game that she's coaching it's a guessing game.

Give me a break with your holier than thou attitude. Fact - If Holly can slap the players on their @sses each time they come back to the bench then I can speculate if I want to. And I think you're sick with your venomous, vitriolic, hate filled post towards me. Now we're even.
Fire Holly, NOW!:)

just watched the replay,my heart skipped a beat when Cooper went down,it was great to see her back in the game

overall it was a pretty good game by the Lady Vols,I was starting to get a bit worried
during the 4th Quarter.it was nice to see them relax and play some good ball to finish off the game

Middelton was out with an ankle injury I think, has anybody heard how long she will be out ? she was in a cast

Nared had another good game, she does seem to be improving in every game since she came back

I think I've finally figured out why Russell is playing away from the post so much on Offense,I think there looking for Graves to drive to the basket, when the other teams post follows Russell out,of course most post stay at home lol that is just my opinion :)

did not make one 3pt shot, that is disturbing, but the announcers(the one that played for Fla.) did say it was hard to shoot the ball at Vandys court, with the way the basket is set up,could Tennessee just buy some seats in the first row or two and put a coach in them ? around the half court line ? :) I know, probably not

Congratulations to the Lady Vols. They won at Vandy! For a minute there in the 4th quarter I thought they would squander yet another lead and lose. Didn't happen! Thank goodness.

Holly still doesn't know how to coach. The LVs are just bigger and faster than the Vandy players.

Mercedes has a bad habit of bringing the bball down to get tied up. I counted at least 3 times that happening. Got to wonder if Dean or CHW is telling her to stop that and if she does it again bring out the game and tell her to stop. It's annoying that she continues to bring the ball down. That's just one of the reasons why Holly is not a good coach.

With less than a minute to go in regulation Kortney is seen headed over to the scorers table with towel in hand looking perturbed and rightfully so. WTF is she going to do with less than a minute left? The camera also had a shot of CHW kneeling down looking rather bothered in Kortney's direction. There's some animosity going on between those two. Body language says a lot. Instead of rewarding a player like Kortney for her contribution in games she is being punished. Don't know why, though. But it's obvious by the lack of playing time CHW is sending a message. CHW just might be a spiteful jealous person. Could she dislike Kortney because she's a pretty heterosexual woman? Who knows. This much we know Kortney isn't getting any minutes.

Which brings me to MeMe Jackson. No development at all. Not in games, anyway. Holly couldn't grow a cha-cha-cha-chia plant let alone develop a basketball player into a successful system.

Next up at home is South Carolina. If we win this game it would take a miracle or Holly being too sick to attend the game.

Tennessee may had won but there are so many fundamentally bad things still happening with this team. Fire Holly, NOW!:D

Could you hate Holly because you aren't into females? Just askin'.

I agree with this line up as it is the future line up!!!!! Might as well get a jump on next year? Maybe if they play together now............then next year they can start out better than Holly guessing who to play?

Right on target and he rarely has more than 7 in the entire rotation if it is a game where the opposition is within 20 points.
