Game Thread Lady Vols at Vanderbilt

Vandy road win is great but I am worried about the other road games regardless in the SEC.

Yea I definitely agree on that. Hopefully, CHW will drill them about focusing all 4 qrtrs. Earlier in the season the LadyVols had slow starts. Now they're scoring great in the first qrtr but not closing out!

I feel like Nunn should've played more minutes. She definitely would've helped with rebounding..

But overall ok game by the LadyVols. 6 straight! I believe the LadyVols will beat everyone that they're supposed to beat in the SEC this year. With possible losses to USC and MsSt. I don't think they lose more than 5 SEC games. JMO..

Actually, I like our chances vs MSU, at home! We got make everyone else but Victoria Vivians beat us.

Mercedes only 8 shot attempts tonite. Come on now!

Let's go Lady Vols!

I would have thought she would have had more than 8 shots. I thought she missed a couple of layups. HW needs to insist that MR gets 15 shots a night . She was not as aggressive tonight as she has been but Webb was trying to man handle her.
Thanks!

The score in this game is deceptive because we did not play well at all. If we don't play much better against MSU we will get blown out.

We played a solid game towards the end we wanted the game to end . And lost focus but nice improvements. We look a lot better. If we beat ms state no doubt we in rankings and everybody talking about Mercedes she had big time numbers. Jackson shut down bell there best scorer she is starting to become are best defensive player

Nice post, seems like Meme is embracing the role of defensive stopper for this team. Good for her!

How do you like our chances against MSU?

Solid defense by the team and we got off to a great start. We shoot 35 percent and win by 13 that is when you are holding the other team down with your defense.

I hope Russell has plans to come back next year and play with the freshmen. She has moved her game to another level this season averaging 16.6 points 9.6 rebounds and 56 percent from the floor.

Good road win but this was a bad game by everyone. The Lady Vols were bad, Vandy was worse and the refs didn't have a clue about what they were doing. At least the refs were close to being equally horrible for both teams. I thought we were done with games like that, but it seems we reverted last night. Happy for the win but geez...........

Last night's game was my first road game - so glad they got the win! I got nervous when they seemed to let up on the gas. Thankfully, they put the pedal back down. The refs made some bad calls on us and I loved seeing Holly get after them and trust me, she did! At one point Jolette chased her down on the sideline to get her back over to the bench - the fans seemed to love it - I sure did! Oh and Dean ran out on the floor one time! 😄

That gym setup is super weird. We were behind the bench and the posts holding up the goals blocked our view at times - annoying! Strange how the court is elevated and scorer's desk is down at eye level. I was confused at first when player's were checking into the game until I saw it.

And y'all are right - that Webb girl is awful and flops out like a fish....ugh! She was trying to beat the hell out of Cedes! 😡 I mean pushing, grabbing her, and knocking her body into her....I believe she did get a warning. She's a nasty piece of work! Oh, and she is listed as 6' 1" but I do NOT believe it. Cedes looked two feet taller than her!

Pretty good amount of fans there and many hung around to see the ladies and take pics and get autographs - always love seeing that!

And...I'm dead typing this because FINALLY met Diamond! She was so nice and hugged me! 💎🍊🏀💎🍊🏀💎🍊🏀💎
(Fangurling out!)

Hoping they keep their streak going...I'll be in TBA Sunday, Lord willing and the weather doesn't keep me away. Snow and bad road conditions in Southern middle Tennessee today. 😔☃️❄️⛄️🌬

GO LADY VOLS! 💙🍊🏀🍊💙

I was surprised we didn't see more of her in the 2nd half, too. I honestly wonder if she and/or the coaching staff was worried about an injury going up against Webb.

If that was the case, we would have seen more of her, and less of Mercedes. Make no mistake, Mercedes is our thoroughbred.

A lot of criticizing Russell on here (as always), but yet again it's hard to argue with 15 points, 13 boards, and 6 blocks.

She could have doubled that 15 points by setting up lower and the guards would feed her when she gets set up.Webb pushed her out .

winning in that facility is always a plus, I wonder how many points the physical space is worth to Vandy. far more than the mere home field advantage. However, I wonder how many recruits don't sign with V because of their gym.

go LVs

Reluctantly agree with this assessment .Heck if they just make 75% of the bunnies they would have won by 30+ points.....I just do not understand missing the number of layups ....it has been going on for at least three years now. It's gotten so bad .I cringe when a Lady Vol goes to the hoop because I expect them to miss.

As I posted at the half ,I would have every player practice layups under extreme pressure at least one hour per practice until they drastically improve in that area.

A real positive to me was the play of Meme again. She continues to improve and really gives great effort on both ends of the floor no matter what the situation is .She is gaining more confidence with every game and that was not expected by me .She is key to rest of season if she continues to improve.
Really disappointed in Middleton, she is shooting short continuously .....looks like a person who is tired after 30 minutes of continuous play and when she misses her first few shots she goes into a shell and it affects her play on both ends of court. She needs to get back in the groove against some of the better teams we play especially if Diamond is not available for foul trouble like she was last nite.

Hope they improve their play against Miss State Sunday otherwise ,it will really be tough sledding even at home ...unless Miss state plays as bad as Vandy did today.

Webb sure was a flopper last night--like last year and the year before and... She spent more time on the floor at both ends than she did standing up!

Two years ago she was a lot "stouter" but she still isn't much of a player, or maybe she is a roll (misspelled on purpose) player because she rolls on the floor so much!

I wish the refs or the league office would speak to a coach that has a long history of floppers, like KY, and tell them to cut it out. It is one thing to fall because someone runs smack into you (like Webb did to Jaime under the basket in the 4th, and then the foul was called on Jaime--it was obviously a charge). It's another thing to just fall down. Webb should be able to withstand a tank bumping her.

I don't think women's basketball is well-served by having a theatrical production.

46 FORTY SIX fouls called. Were these refs thinking they get paid per whistle?

I suspect the refs are scared of Webb.

I'm glad to see this comment! The elevation of Meme's play has been wonderful to me as well. Her confidence has increased and I can read it on her face when she makes a good play - Meme has that smirk down pat and I love it! Really, really great seeing her contribute more and becoming a key player. Looking forward to more from her!

Another one is Qui - I've seen a significant improvement in her play since the Navy game (which I think was her debut?). Her speed and aggressiveness have increased and she seems to really want more, and be taking to heart and taking pride in the fact that she IS a Lady Vol! Great she can give Cedes some rest but I love having them in at the same time! And on a completely shallow and irrelevant note - she is a beauty - love that she plays in a full face of makeup and always looks runway ready! LOL

I think down the road we may be in trouble with depth. We basically have 3 bench players(not counting Harris).

Middleton - Can dribble and pass the ball, but limited offensively and defensively against all teams except cupcakes.

Dunbar - Still limited by the foot injury??

Nunn - Could end up being the difference we need, but is she limited by injury also??

Harris - Project - All games will probably be close the remaining of the season, especially with the starters being up and down, so basically no minutes.

The sad thing is we have about the same talent and depth as UCONN, but the difference is night and day with the offense, defense, fundamentals, confidence and of course coaching.

If you watch the game it was never really in jeorpardy . And this why I say everyone can not be a coach . Middelton does not have to score all the time her job is to play solid defense hit open threes and mid range and run the offense yes her shot was off but she had good looks. Nunn had 6 points in 6 minutes that is Huge. bench is not always bout scoring you can affect the game in other ways
