Game Thread Lady Vols in the CANCUN CHALLENGE

playing with jet lag on an artificial floor with referees on a vacation - and they experienced adversity of their own making and an odd collection of players finished with a win.

Key stat for me was that Marquette scored 27 points off of our 20 turnovers. We only scored 17 off of theirs. We shoot 43 percent they shoot 44. We hit 8 three point baskets to their 4 big night for us from the three.

Although i was not happy about all the missed free throws i will commend them for not folding every time Marquette would go on a run and take the lead. they instead fought their way back in it and other players also stepped up after three starters fouled out.

Jet lag..... artificial floor..... questionable reffing...... starters too many minutes..... foul trouble..... foul shooting....

It is not like the other team does not face these same things......

Perhaps I should be happy that we are competitive with Marquette......

I see the adjustment to place Russell at the top of the zone to prevent penetration but it doesn’t seem to be working.

Meme picks up 2 fouls early and will sit for the rest of the first half.

We’re shooting well. We just need to hold on to the ball and stop penetration. I know, easier said than done.

I think placing Russell at the top of the key does very little to stop penetration. She would be more effective in the low post to block shots and grab rebounds. Most of the time when a team penetrate our defense, Russell is out of position to effectively stop the penetration, block shots or rebound. Usually, Russell is too slow to move from the top of the zone to stop or deter a penetrating player.

I knew it all along...

Fans might not like it but this teams needs challenges like this. As mentioned earlier, this team would have lost a closely contested game like this the past two years.

We also need to understand that we have freshmen at two starting positions and sometime three freshmen in the line up. This is a learning situation, however, most of the time they held their own. Until we have a few more ranked and/or experienced teams under our belt, we are going to have games like this. I do believe that this team is not as good as they are going to be as the freshmen mature. When Davis, Nared and Russell are on, along with an effective supporting cast, they could be scary good.

Way to fight ladies. So I guess we will play 8 like last year. I would love for Harris and KK get some playing time the next 2 games.

Limit the unforced turnovers and make the free throws this team won this game by at least 10 points. We may need to play a zone until we get better in the man to man.

Nah, they still have to get ready for the SEC, and Marq, was an SEC type team.

They have to learn how to play man, it will only make the zone better.

But as a switch, the zone, I like, I would actually junk it up with all the activity of the starting five, Green and Annie.

Points in the paint, Marq 66 Tenn 46. We gotta get tougher, attack the rim more, jump shot or floaters in the paint.

They do have to learn cohesion on man defense...Knowing what to expect and where to be will come to them.

A little zone sprinkled in there just to reinstate the principals...But don't get comfortable with zone....Man players make great zone defenders but zone defenders are usually bad at man to man defense.

the Lady Vols are ranked 12th in the AP Top 25 poll

Marquette is ranked 20th in the AP Top 25 poll

Oklahoma State is unranked, but has pulled in some votes

South Dakota is unranked

gotta focus Lady Vols, stop the turn overs and hit some shot's,you can do it :good!:
it will be good to see how the young Lady Vol's do against better teams

as all ways Go Lady Vol's :clapping:

South Dakota is one of those trap games. Usually they have three shooters that can light you up. Perimeter defense will more than likely, need to be pretty good.

A lot of teams only play eight players, UCONN usually play eight players unless they get a huge lead. As long as this team grows, and can avoid the injury bug, I think they will be okey.
