Game Thread Lady Vols Softball in the Mary Nutter Classic

4 games in 24 hours including the emotional win over OU and the legs were dead and the gas tank empty.

3 runs allowed by Arnold should have been enough but credit to the Utah pitcher, she kept TN off balance and is a good pitcher.

But Utah isn't OU.

Oh well.

I had a feeling this Utah team was going to give us trouble. Maybe they will get plenty of rest tonight and beat Texas tomorrow.

The way this tournament is structured you cascade thru teams. This was Utah's first game. They'll eventually play somebody and it will be that teams first game.

I'm directly behind home plate. The ball almost hit her. It was a ball. No matter Utah earned it.

I will take your word for that Jeff. But why in the world would an umpire make such a blatant call like that? Did Ralph raise Hell and or get kicked out.

We just /sounded/ sluggish today---as if we were tired. Was hoping we'd keep winning but isn't realistic, I suppose. Hope we can bounce back with more energy tomorrow. Team has played a lot in the last two weeks.

So what does this loss mean for our rankings? I know it's at least somewhat contingent upon how we play against Texas, but wouldn't losing to Utah hurt us more than losing to OU, should that have been the case? Granted, preseason rankings don't mean much, but I'm still curious.

Rankings don't mean much right now...Ralph said this was like Spring training early in the season. Utah is a darn good team, no shame in losing to a team that's undefeated so far, has 2 of the better pitchers in their conference, both juniors, and a Senior dominated batting order! In other words...they're legit! 3 of their starters were hitting over .500...and might not have even pitched their best in Donovan, against Tennessee...at least statistically. Tonight's pitcher had a 1.50 era and had thrown less innings than Donovan, who had a 0.63 era!! You just might see them in Oklahoma City...yep.

Jeff, to say the bats were dead today is an understatement! I think Geer and Greg were a COOL 1-14 combined for their efforts today! But Utah is a good team...2 legit junior pitchers, and a Senior dominated batting order with 3 of them over .500 early in the season. It's not like the basketball team losing to folks they should beat by 20 plus points...I don't think this loss is anything huge.

The Utah loss will be looked back upon at the end of season as a good loss...and will help the rpi

catcher must have an arm to get vines

When the catcher dropped the ball the ball ended up directly behind the catcher. Vines really couldn't see that, all she knew was that the catcher was spinning around looking for the ball so she took off. At the exact instant she took off the catcher saw the softball laying right next to her foot, picked it up and fired it to second. It was a good throw no doubt about that but had the ball been another 2 feet away from her Vine's would have made it.

Utah has only given up 7 runs in 10 games this season. Their pitchers have a 0.69 era as a team. They have 8 shutouts in the 10 games played. I suspect they will be a top ten team if their pitchers continue to perform like they have first ten games of the season. I expect they will have less than 10 losses and will help any teams rpi even as a loss.
I was hoping we could come out of this tourney 14 and 1 still have a chance to do that beat Texas today.

Exiting this tournament with only one loss would be great for a team so young. Pitching was better than one would expect and the bats were silenced only once this year so far. Now we will see how they bounce back which should tell us a lot about this team.

We scratched out 5 hits, same as Utah, just not as timely. And we weren't striking out a bunch. Nothing to be concerned about.
