Game Thread Lady Vols Softball in the Mary Nutter Classic

13-2 heading home after two weeks on the road not bad at all....the two losses are to teams that will be in the NCAA tourney so not so bad....got some things to work on when they practice Tuesday-Wednesday....If you're in the Knoxville area please go out and support this team!!

I'll definitely take it especially since it's supposed to be a rebuilding year!

Jeff I want to say that I really appreciate you for helping us see the game. I trust you have enjoyed your vacation (LOL) and ready to get home to rest. Talk to you later!!

Before this tournament started I thought there would be a loss to Oklahoma, and a possible loss to Utah.

The Texas loss is a bit of a surprise. My bet is that if the team plays Texas again they'll beat them, I'm not so sure about beating Utah or OU again.

Jeff thanks for the work the last three weekends enjoy your time back home

No doubt Jeff and I think the losses showed the freshman things they can continue to work on and see....I think the lineup is fine just need to continue to work on our pitchers mechanics hitting spots and staying ahead.... brake and morrison big weekend ahead for them we will need them...hopefully scarlett will be ready again when her number is called not sure when that will be again though

Would like to know if Geer got on Ralphs s*** list because of that 1st at bat or she had other issues. :snoring::snoring:

Probably didn't like her approach to the at bat as the lone senior on the team she has to be better....He could have brought her back in to bat in the huge spot were Scarlett popped out to the catcher but didn't...wanted to see her bring something and nothing sigh

My though as well. Geer is a good player but she has the tendency to lose focus sometimes. Really started noticing it last year. She starts to watch strikes go by and swings at balls. She will do better I think.

Does Seggern have power...

I just now saw this. From what I have seen no she doesn't have a whole lot of power. I don't have any idea what these kids do in high school or travel ball, but she appears to be more of a hit for average type of batter. And right now her average isn't very high, I don't think she's batting but somewhere in the mid to high two hundreds.

She is hitting .212 through today and has 1 HR so far this year. Like Leach who has 1 as well but neither have much power.McSwain hitting .259 and Rowland .333 and CJ .345.
Greeg leads team with .489.

In the post-game media report Ralph confirms that the team was tired. He says 15 road games in a row is taking a bit of a toll on the young team.

He said the Texas pitcher was one and three on the season, which confirms what I thought from looking at her, that she should have been very hittable.

He had high praise for Matty Moss, but he also pointedly called her out for giving up the leadoff home run after the team came back to make the score 3-2. In the final analysis that extra run for Texas didn't make much of a difference. But Ralph said that she gave up that home run with a pitch right down the middle. As I said in a previous post Matty was struggling to find the umpire's strike zone and eventually resorted to down the middle change-ups followed by fastballs. That worked for all but that one pitch. Had the umpire had a more consistent strike zone that home run might never have happened.

Texas A&M is undefeated and I just looked at their conference schedule....they avoid Bama, LSU, Auburn, and Florida.....must be nice haha

We just stopped hitting the last two/three games---seemed to be tired and flat. We didn't hit that well in the Nebraska game that we won. Let's face it: You play bigger/better teams, the pitching you face is going to be tougher. Holcomb was red hot coming into the Mary Nutter and I don't think she got 1 hit in the the five games--maybe one. She didn't play one game. Everybody struggled. Other than the Gregg solo home run, how many extra base hits did we have in the last three games--one? Arnold wasn't as sharp as well. You give up 3 runs in the first two innings to a solid team, and you are in an uphill battle from the get-go--and we couldn't overcome the early deficit. I hate that we were on a nice roll going into the last three games and really fizzled out at the plate.

Let's remember that Seggern had key, run-scoring hits in both the OU and nebraska games. She'll be fine. But we really haven't shown much power at all thus far. We beat the ball into the ground a lot, and we beat out some of them for hits, but we need some extra base hits. How many did we have in the Mary Nutter? Very few.

Ralph likes to point out mistakes but not his own - Karen holds the team together

Ralph is very much a tough-love manager. I'm not sure if he's always been this way, or whether this has been a recent development with him, but he seems to have no patience with anybody anymore. I mean, who pulls one of his best players/hitters after one at bat in the last game of a tourney? Geer is a near-All America player. She struggled yesterday and struck out in her first at bat today, but it takes guts to bench a player of her caliber after one at bat. And of course it didn't help. He yanked Arnold after one, and that mostly worked out as Moss only gave up one more run. If Ralph sees anyone struggling, even for a short period, the man is getting out the hook.

Texas A&M is undefeated and I just looked at their conference schedule....they avoid Bama, LSU, Auburn, and Florida.....must be nice haha

Here at this tournament in California they've taken out number one Florida State, number 21 Arizona State, number 23 BYU, and number 14 Michigan. That's not too shabby.

This is a very young and inexperienced but very talented Tennessee team.

Of the top 12 players four are freshmen, four are sophomores, three are juniors - two of which have limited experience, and one senior.

They may be a year away from making some noise, but I think they're going to make some noise.

Yep they should be ranked in the top 10 next week....only Mizzou, UGA, and Tennessee can stop them from an SEC regular season title

SEC softball scheduling is exhibit A for why the conference should completely do away with the regular season title. Texas A&M may end up a top 10 team but awarding a title to even a top 10 team avoiding those 4 is a travesty.

Bottom of the 5th inning an Utah is on top of LSU 3-0...Utah's other ace pitcher currently pitching a shutout and the Utah catcher has thrown out an attempted LSU base runner trying to get to 2nd

Final Utah wins 3-0 against LSU...their pitcher threw a complete game shutout held LSU to 5 hits and had 7K in the game....Utah is a good team

Yep when I said Tennessee might not beat Utah if they were to play again in a rematch, I meant it.
