Game Thread Lady Vols Softball in the Mary Nutter Classic

For those of us who haven't seen Arnold pitch yet can you give us a thumbnail sketch. How hard does she throw. what pitches does she use, can she change speeds effectively, can she hit her spots?

She is a control and location pitcher with good speed. As far as how hard she throws I can't give you an exact velocity but it appears to be in the mid-sixties. She doesn't throw as hard as Moss, but hard velocity isn't how she gets batters out. She gets batters out by a combination of location and speed variation.

She has a nasty change up that she uses sparingly but very effectively. Can she change speeds effectively? You better believe it. Can she hit her spots? You better believe it.

She is very efficient, against Oklahoma, the defending national champion and one of the best teams in the country, she threw only 94 pitches, gave up four hits, and didn't walk anybody in a complete game.

This would have been a complete game shutout except for the two throwing errors by Gregg in the seventh inning.

She's only a freshman, and as such is subject to freshman ups and downs. It remains to be seen whether she will hit a freshman wall in a couple of months and start to struggle. But the early signs are that she's very tough mentally. She can pitch from behind and she can pitch with runners on base. And as I said in the game thread, in the last 2 innings the Oklahoma dugout was very loudly chanting her name. She didn't get rattled at all that I could tell.

On edit: The box score shows she had one walk.

Who is on the mound for tomorrow's games? What can we expect from our opponents?

Sorry Rick I have no idea. I'll find out who's pitching at the same time everybody else will. As far as the opponents, Tennessee plays Nebraska followed by Utah starting at 3:30 local time. I don't really follow these schools so I don't know anything about them.

Ralph may try to give Morrison a start against Nebraska who came into this 0 and 8. He could also decide to go Arnold and Moss the rest of the games. If we get through this tourney 14 and 1 would be a huge success and 15 and 0 wow that would be amazing.

Moss seems to be giving up the home run ball early this season still she did another good job tonight and is 6 and 0 on the season.

I doubt Ralph pitches Morrison. He didn't pitch her or Brake much at all in the last tourney against weak competition. I think it would be good if he did, but my bet is that we see the same two starters.

I agree it was just a thought because Nebraska is better than their 0 and 8 record they only lost to Auburn 3 to 2. I think he may reverse and go with Moss here and Arnold vs Utah.

Arnold will probably get Utah who is undefeated and was one game away from the WCWS last season....who pitches against Nebraska I don't know they don't hit very well and their pitching isn't very good either....you may see if Morrison can establish her drop ball against them or if Brake can limit her walks and get ahead of the batters...Moss to me would start against Nebraska if it's not Brake or Morrison

TN the home team. Moss pitching, Lockman catching, Vines left field. I have limited phone juice so will post judiciously.
