Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team NCAA Regionals

Hi all! New poster, long time lurker here. :)

Concerning the dropped ball by Vines in left field in the Ohio State game, she covered a lot of ground to get that ball. For many outfielders they wouldn't have gotten to it. I would assume she would probably tell you she should've caught it, but it wasn't an ordinary dropped fly ball.

Bria Bush has been given a full release by the staff.

Full release as in release from her scholarship or release to start playing/workout activities again?

I appreciate that folks have differing opinions on what should and should not have been caught, but she got to the ball rather easily, didn't have to dive or extend her body, so, in my opinion, that play has to be made. It's not unusual for a player, especially a freshman, to take their eye off the ball for a second and maybe that's what happened. But if Tennessee is going to improve defensively next season, those plays have to result in outs to prevent the pitching staff from throwing extra pitches to get 4th and 5th outs in an inning. We made 5 errors in two games Sunday. The rest of the SEC, in 11 total games, made 4...That to me, is the only flaw in her game. She is an excellent offensive player, and a threat to steal anytime.

Release from her scholarship.

You have to provide a source for this information. Otherwise being a 1st time poster would get limited trust. The articles I read from LVJeff on here didn't indicate anything about Bush leaving the program. There's been concerns that something wasn't right but no in this regards.

This would be awful if true. Everything has been pointing to her injury concerns from high school but I felt something fishy with her has been going on all along. But, unless you provide a source/link then your post is not going far. Thanks.

Why has there been no news posted about it? I'm not saying it's not true. I just find it hard to believe. We just lost what was supposed to be a top recruit from last year. I don't get it.

I would like to see some confirmation because we all have been talking most of today about Bush & her chances of coming back next season healthy or something else was going on. Thanks!

Doubt you'll see any news on it or anyone else leaving. Most of the time, the first "news" on the topic will be when the fall roster is posted.

Wow, I did not expect this......A mystery without a lot of clues yet...Was her injury so significant the coaching staff felt she would never be able to be an SEC pitcher again and released her? Or did she just want to leave?

Like many of you, as a softball fan, I have followed this young lady through HS and was looking forward to her having a stellar career at UT. After reading the article posted by Jeff about her HS injury and needing time to recover I was hopeful her story would have a happy ending at UT, but it has suddenly plowed into a brick wall. I really hate this on many levels.

I know the rest of you guys are just as stunned and disappointed as I am at this sudden turn of events.

Great point...That ball has to be caught...It became a hold your breath moment when the ball was hit with this team....These girls education is being paid on their ability to hit and catch...Catch the ball!

I know that sounds harsh, but we had way to many errors this past season...Some of these fine young ladies need to shag a lot of fly balls, and practice handling hot grounders....And throw in some pepper for bat control too...

Only someone close to the program or to the player would know why Bush is leaving. The programs rarely make announcements when it comes to transfers and such....this isn't good for the team, obviously, because pitching depth was a problem this year and now it's more of a problem.

RE errors, the run that knocked us out of the tourney was the result of an error--two really, one of commission (by Overstreet) and one of omission (by Geer) on the pop up. Yes, we do have to get better defensively and I'm sure we will.

I know nothing about Bush whatsoever on leaving but on this thread I said would lose 3 to 5 maybe. I would not name names but she was 1 of the group. Just never looked happy after the first of the year regardless of the reason I wish her well. I would be just as surprised it she did not drop down a level at her new school. May not have been injury related after all.

This "shocking news" on Bush brings coach Weekly's comment about bringing in an experienced JC pitcher next season more into focus....There must be a lot of behind the scenes planning going on at the Weekly's softball bunker.

Anyone know which outfielder had the best defensive percentage?

Just a guess, but I believe Gaffin would have to be near the top, if not the top defender. Her loss was huge.

Agreed. I tried to look it up but the yearly stats were not up yet. Her injury hurt probably more than any other senior on the roster. She did so many things pretty great. I hope she is well for the USA softball team. I do not think she would have played any more for us regardless. She is a true LV for life!!

If the news about Bria Bush is true, then there's nothing shocking or unexpected about her release. I'm not the first one nor the only one who thought Bush may not make it here, but I was afraid that this sort of thing would take place one day. But most of us thought it would take place next year. The Weeklys and Marty McDaniel know something more about Bush than any one of us, and I'm sure they've made a collective decision which is best for both the program and Bush herself. I feel a little sad for Bush since playing for UT has been her dream for the past 10 years. If you have been following Bria Bush closely, in one of radio interviews she gave Bush discussed about committing early (her sophomore year) and expressed a concern, "What if I turn out to be not good later on, and the coaches don't want me anymore," At the time when I heard that comment, I didn't think too much about it. The Weeklys are known to honor their commitments/offers to the recruits and there was no alarm/cause for concern regarding Bria Bush. But her worry/words proved to be very prophetic in hindsight. I will be very surprised if Bush ends up at one of P5 schools. A mid-major school, I suspect.

BTW, I read the article LVJeff posted last year, and there's nothing in the article which would indicate to me that whatever (significant) injury Bush might have had was related to that HBP. If Bria Bush had suffered anything, I suspect it was way more substantial than a simple HBP. If she suffered any injury which hindered her pitching at UT that is...

I DP said it is true, it is. I would suspect this is something that has been in the works, at least in Bria's mind for some time. Too some to not have weighed all the options. I would think also not any injury related reason at all.

Anyone know which outfielder had the best defensive percentage?

McClain 1.000 no errors, Gaffin .949 4 errors, Geathers .933 2 errors, Vines .924 5 errors, Geer .891 10 errors.

Some of Geer and Gaffin's errors may have been in the infield, instead of the outfield.

CJ is a great outfielder no doubt. Vines had more than twice the chances than some of the fielders. I did not see a lot of the early games because of no streaming but If I was going to Build a outfield on defense only Vines and CJ would be in it.

I would expect most of Geers was in the infield and she had a few mental errors as well.

Thanks Jeff

Is it the same DeerPark who said that Kelsey Morrison would red shirt (due to medical reason)? At the time when he said it, I knew that wasn't true, but I kept my mouth shut. Isn't is also the same DeerPark who said the team can only play 2 games (doubleheader) in one day per NCAA rules? I knew that wasn't true either since the day before I heard Clint Myers saying his Auburn team was ready to play either 2 games or 3 games (Auburn regional also had a weather issue last weekend.)

With all due respect, I guess DeerPark is a reliable source and a good poster for most of time, but I sure don't take his words as Gospel truth. In this case involving Bush however, I believe it's accurate.

I only take 1 thing as the Gospel Truth and it has not got anything to do with sports. If you said DP said something as quoted I did not see those examples and certainly not question your quotes. I will let DP speak to that if he is inclined to do so.
I will say I have found DP to be very reliable in what he posts.
