Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 13

They held on 9 to 5. So if we can beat probably Missouri and Kentucky we'll be playing for the title.

Finally, GA wins 9-5. Seeding is FL 1, KY 2, TN 3, AU 4, AL 5, Mizzou 6.

Alabama is the 4th team in the country and is assured of a super regional - yet they finish 5th in the SEC. Wow.

Tough day for Bama they were the number two seed if they win at home and the loss drops them down to five.

Bama will probably have to beat Miss St, Auburn, Florida, and either Tennessee or Kentucky to win the SEC. I wouldn't want to be in that spot and we easily could have.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did it. Their pitching has been somewhat erratic - if they straighten that out they can do it.

is the fourth team in the country? They are ranked #4? How can that be assured a super-regional before the season ends?

Wish I was going to the tourney! Hear is to the Lady Vols getting back to the SEC title game again and this year winning it!!

They're not dropping below an 8 seed they will get a super regional

that was weirdly (stupidly?) released the day before we played auburn, when they were ranked 7 and we were ranked 13, and 24 hours we had run-ruled auburn?

#1 because Bama is in the SEC which is the best conference period. They were ranked high all season is another plus.

The only way I see them not making the top 8 would be to lose their 1st game in the SEC tourney. I still think that won't keep them out of the top 8 though.

I have to agree with you like I said above although there's a chance they will not get in that top 8.

Yeah, the way they do the rankings is really crazy. RPI means more though nowadays. I'm not sure where Bama was in RPI heading into this weekends series but I'm pretty sure it was top 8. I know we were ranked #9 in the polls but I'm not sure about our RPI as well.

Edit: Here's the RPI as of May 2nd: College DI Softball Rankings - NCAA Women's Softball RPI | NCAA.com

UF was 1st. Bama was 4th. Auburn was 7th. Mizzou was 10th. UK was 12th. We were 13th. We were the worst in RPI of them all. 6th of all SEC teams which I think is crap.

Then again, Bama seeding 5th in the SEC tourney but being ranked 4th in RPI is even crazier. Bama will fall a couple of spots in RPI now though while we should move up. Maybe even into the top 10 now.

Maybe losing all three to florida hurt our RBI--not sure. You'd think we'd be higher given our record plus the two wins over auburn. I don't really give a whit: we've got a very good team and have got a 3 seed.

Gregg, as UT fans must realize, is an All America quality player. We had two legit, first-team AAs a couple of years ago on the left side of the infield with Shipman and Chavanne, two of the best players in the program's history--and we now have another pair in Gregg and Geer. Awfully nice to have those two leading the team. This is a /good/ hitting team, from top to bottom, and we showed some power this weekend with, what, six home runs?

Moss seemed to almost get emotional in the post-game interview. Said she had to grind through the two games this weekend and admitted that she was tired. I'm sure the season is demanding on freshman, who have to adjust not just to a lot of games, but also the travel and the pressure of playing in the SEC. They've all done tremendously well. I imagine a couple of days of rest will help and she'll be ready to go for the tourney. It would be amazing if Gabriel could get another year of eligibility--we'll see. Otherwise, we'll be leaning on at least one freshman pitcher next year and maybe two--not ideal.

Who is going to catch for us next year? Is it going to be Lockman or Rowland?

Who ever hits the best. I would say Lockmans to lose. I have said in a recent post that Greeg should be an AA. She is a good one. I do not even think of Geer in the same sentence as Gregg, Maddy or Raven. Too erratic on defense even if she was in her natural position which is center field. Moving to 3rd has affected her offense somewhat even thought she is hitting for a high average she should do better. Looked bad at the plate today as I remember in the first 2 at bats and I had to leave so not sure what happened after that. I for the life of me cannot see how McSwain regressed in the field from last year to this year. I stated yesterday that Leach would not lead off today because of not only the poor at bats but her shoddy defense and her confidence was shattered . I am not sure who I would pitch but Erin would be my guess.

I was giving my opinion. Obviously the super-regional seeds haven't been handed out, but I believe Alabama has earned one.

Geer may not be quite as good defensively as Gregg, Maddy or Chavanne, but she's been moved around a lot and not been allowed to settle at one position. She's now playing her third position. Offensively, she's had a very big year--her numbers virtually match those of Gregg this year, a hair below. She, Gregg and Overstreet have been our stalwarts.

McSwain has less errors this season than last. But the errors she made this season directly resulted in losses. Plus she looked tentative, even lost when she had the ball. Her batting average and home runs dropped way below her freshman season. She got some rope to play with as a freshman. She didn't get as much this season.

Tournament bracket.

SEC Softball Bracket

We play the Mizzou/SC winner Thursday noon eastern.

If we win, we play the winner of the A&M/LSU/KY games to get to the championship and presumably Florida.

These are winnable games.

...I am not sure who I would pitch but Erin would be my guess.

The coaches have set this up pretty well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Moss pitch against Mizzou (assuming they beat SC). Moss only pitched 2.2 innings in the Mizzou series in Columbia so they haven't seen her much. With Mizzou you have to keep Crane, Gadbois, and Fagan off the bases as much as possible. Moss or Gaffin can do that better than Erin IMO.

Kentucky hasn't seen any of our pitchers (didn't play them) so you can throw anybody at them. Plus Kentucky is not a strong hitting team so Erin may go second if TN wins game 1. But I keep thinking Kentucky isn't that strong. Maybe A&M or LSU is the next opponent. Who pitches against one of them?

Who pitches against FL? Florida is not a power-house hitting team like Auburn. Maybe Alabama comes out of that side of the bracket. If they do you probably won't see Gaffin pitch against them.

Just guessing but I say Moss in game 1, if they advance, Gabriel in game 2, and if they advance again I don't know.

I'm glad I'm not the coach.
