Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 13

Anyone have insight into Missouri's (9 in a row) and LSU's (10 in a row) late season turnarounds? injured players returning, more favorable schedule, or something else?

I thought Morrison was redshirting this year!! Why PH with someone who has only batted one other time all year? Is this a Ralphism?

She hit in the first game, so she could not have redshirted unless it was for an injury. She wasn't injured, so she could not redshirt.

Yea, we need to keep winning and one of kentucky, auburn or the pink elephants to lose. I think both will happen. Nice hitting display tonight--this group has excellent plate discipline--and great job by Moss.

Both are great teams just had a slump kinda like Auburn and Georgia right now....but they're good teams too

We control our own destiny folks. As long as we keep winning. We are now tied with Auburn for second place.

Missouri had pitching problems which they seem to have resolved. LSU inexplicably lost confidence which they have now regained.

Ralph said Moss was missing her spots a little bit early but in general pitched very well. He also said the team was feeling the pressure, but then began to loosen up and focus around the fifth inning. He said Geather's home run was 300 feet.

Today's game is at 1 p.m. If the team comes out strong and jumps on Ole Miss early, they should come away with a victory. But if they lollygag around in the first innings like they did last night who knows.

Thanks DP! Did not know that appearing in one game is automatic for burning a redshirt. Apparently they did not plan on a redshirt and just said she would not pitch. Seems strange to me but it is what it is.

Great job by our team. What an epic 7th inning! I've never seen back-to-back-to-back bombs or 4 home runs in one inning. The offense just exploded and awesome to watch!

Win 2 more games and TN will be #2 seed for SECT. That's a great accomplishment. Picked to finish #5 in preseason coaches poll, this team may very well exceed the expectations.

I'm not too sure whether I agree with Ralph on "team was flat, and didn't come to play," statement. I do believe the team came to play for sure. They were putting on baserunners and getting hits in every inning. We just couldn't get the timely hits needed until the 5th inning or so to score a run. Ole Miss is much improved, and I hope that the team plays it like it plays Auburn or A&M and give some major beatdowns the next two days. #GoVols #BeatOleMiss

We'll finish second through fifth. One loss probably moves us to fifth as I don't expect Bama or Kentucky to lose and Auburn more than likely wins their last two as well.

Meghan Gregg is playing great at SS. She seems to have a stronger throwing arm now than last year. Her batting average is nearly .400. Overstreet is having a breakout year offensively. Geer is having an All-SEC caliber year for sure. Give Maddi Shipman a raise!

Defensive errors, looking at too many strikes in the batter's box, Overstreet's bad throw to second, all are evidence to me that they weren't focused in the first few innings. I don't think they were ready to play the beginning of the game.

You have a point there, Jeff, but it's not like none of those mistakes have never been committed by our players in the past EVEN when they came to play. :) Aubrey Leach and Megan Geer will have to clean up their fielding miscues as we head into the postseason. Otherwise, a real good team will punish us. Ole Miss almost did. I could live with Overstreet's sup-par throwing arm...

My point is players do make mistakes when they are fully ready to play. Sometimes those mistakes can be attributed to being nervous, too pumped up, etc. I know it very well firsthand. Mistakes are not always a byproduct of players' unpreparedness, and I wouldn't say TN made all those ugly errors in the game against OU b/c they didn't come to play either. If anything, our players were too excited and pumped up to play against the Sooners. Same against Florida down in Gainesville.

I agree again Jeff. We cannot continue to look at every strike and swing at those less good. During the Awburn series we meaning most every one was aggressive from the git go. I would if you had a way to determine , Gregg, Aucoin, Overstreet, Gaffin and maybe even Geer will take the 1st pitch even if it is a strike. Most good pitchers are going to try and throw a strike to get ahead. McSwain had did that in the past but I think time on the pine may have helped because she had done well as the DP and we need another right hand bat in the lineup. I still think we are now playing our best lineup with Gaffin in the field as I had said several weeks back. Overstreet is adequate behind the plate but has had trouble with pass ball. Of course some of the worm burners she has to block is not easy. Back to the defense I would not trade Gregg for any shortstop in the country. A all American possible for her maybe even this year if we can get in the WS. Great range, great arm and a error along I can handle. Just my 2 cents worth!

I will say what my Dad use to say on the first pitch by the braves if it wasn't a strike

**** :)

starts with a s

In the first inning today (saturday) Leach and Vines both took first-pitch strikes that were very hittable and ended up popping up on much tougher pitches to hit. This is the downside of being very selective at the plate. The upside is that our players have walked a /lot/ this year, which has resulted in a lot of runs.

I think first pitches is the best strike you should get from a good pitcher. Good play by Gregg, no one could have thrown the runner out.

that is a good looking stadium

side retired

score is 0 to 0 LVs lead :)
