Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 6

Didn't see the game, but RE Vines being held at third: if there is 40 percent or better chance of her beating the throw, you gotta send her. We've struggled to get hits and runs, so you've got to force them to make a play. I assume there were fewer than two outs on that play, as with two outs the runner is off with contact.

Vines was on second and it was not as easy a decision as the announcer made out. She's been a pretty good announcer but wrong on that call in my opinion. The second baseman was close to that ball and it wasn't a no brainer to run.

This team is just making very poor decisions at the plate. Swinging at balls out of the zone and letting strikes go by.

When the pitching and hitting as well as the suspect defense it will cause intimidation. You most likely see it again in the Auburn series. I as well dislike Florida but they most always get any player they want and especially a pitcher. Not sure our best ones can pitch for Florida this year. We need to catch up or be left behind.

Florida has major advantages in softball. They have a large recruiting base where the high school players play AAU and high school softball year round. Also, the Florida team has good weather for practice and outside off season work year round. Easier for Walton to build a dominating program but he is also a great coach no doubt.

outfielders throwing to the wrong base in a sorta close game. Still a lot of fundamental mistakes. I realize we are a young team but the little things add up fast. Top of 7 we need a 5 run homerun or the brooms are being used.

We used to rip Gourley. She has improved so much. We used to rip Hager too. Walton's pitchers improve so much when they get into his program.

what would you attribute the improvement to?

Again they have warm weather to practice in the year round. But he and his pitching coach have apparently developed a good program for their pitchers. I remember Hager talking about it during an interview. After losing in the WCWS the first time Walton came back and revamped his entire program and approach. Must have found something that works.

We'll get better from this....pitching kept us in the games for the most part as Ralph said cannot continue putting the leadoff batter on base to start an inning...Our hitters will watch film and see where they need to improve to continue to get better....won't face another team as good as Florida the rest of this season

We have the pitchers now they're just young....we also have a left stud pitcher coming down the pipeline she will be a good one!!

I'd put money on the Gators 3-peating right now. Walton is turning into the Geno Auriemma of softball.

I've had to temper my expectations for this season. I expected more of an impact from the freshman pitchers and I also expected the fielding to be better. Just like last season it's still pitching and fielding with this team. They'll compete for a top-five finish in the SEC, but right now they're nowhere close to being in Florida's league.

Ditto !!!!!

Absolutely. Unlike Auriemma however, Walton has a great personality that kids just flock to. If he starts recruiting a kid its pretty much over. He's hot right now and the only way I see it stopping is if he ever thinks about moving over to baseball.

Series against AR and FL don't reflect how good/bad this team really is; we did exactly what 90% of so-called experts predicted we'd do sweeping the Razorbacks and getting swept by the Gators. Historically, Gainesville has been a very tough place for us to play anyway much less for a very young team w/ 10 freshman, 5 of 'em playing a prominent role either in batting order or pitching rotation. I thought we did pretty decent minus all the fielding errors and occasional mental lapses which are expected of a young team. When we go up against MO, TAMU, GA, AU, the teams with similar talent that's when we will truly find out what this team is all about. One close game we played against BAMA earlier showed me that this year's team might turn out to be pretty good.

I'm still optimistic that we can finish in the top 4 of the SEC, and make run at hosting a super regional. IMO, the Weeklys need to trust Moss and Bush more and let these girls see more actions. Our pitching as a whole is not too shabby, sure it's not like FL's but then who has the pitching staff like FL does. Let our freshman pitchers get some more experience and prepare them for the postseason. Best days are still ahead! #Beat Jacksonville #Beat MS St
