Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 6

Did Gabriel get hurt? Did the coaches just plan for her to pitch one inning? Seems odd to pull her after one, even after giving up two (unearned) runs. The pitching is worrisome--but I also wonder about the coaches yanking our pitchers soooo quickly. It can't be good for their confidence.

she wasn't injured, later in the game, they did say that Ralph said he wanted to get as many players in as he could,so they would be ready this week end

so i think he jerked her and let Matty and Gaffin do some pitching, but it was an awful quick hook

We're pitching by committee this year...all the pitchers have each others backs so their confidence is high and they all understand the bigger goal which is to win...which makes this team so good

they wouldve lost the game had gabriel pitched much longer. the girl just isn't the pitcher we were led to believe coming out of hs and the injury excuse is no longer working

For one thing, she had a serious injury as a freshman that set her back by a year or longer. She walked and hit a batter to start yesterday's game, but the two runs scored on an error, yes? She's been pretty solid--inconsistent at times, but pretty solid. We will find out a lot about our pitching this weekend. She needs to pitch well, and we need to field well--that's been a problem.

I saw EG in person at the tourney here in Clearwater. She is very slim and not physically imposing. She has to get by pitching with guile and location not intimidation.

I still wish that Aucoin was in the rotation. She could flat out knock the bat out of your hands with the pitch. 70mph or better.

Not true.

I've seen her dominate very good opponents.

Right next to the quote "Stupid is as Stupid says" I'm sure Randy's pic is there. lol

I believe they changed the rule this season that if the pitch is between the batter's boxes, then the batter cannot take first if she is hit.

Sort of. If the player intentionally leans over the plate or the "river" which is the area between the plate in the chalk line of the batters box, to be hit by a pitch, then the batter is not awarded first base.

If the player does not move, then she should be awarded first base as long as she was in the batters box. Based on the broadcast, that was the argument that was taking place. Neither batter that was hit for Tennessee moved, meaning they did not intentionally lean into the pitch.

Not sure where you got that information, but Aucoin is known more for her movement than her speed. Hasn't been clocked above the low 60s at TN. Gabriel has more speed on her fastball.

Aucoin can't throw strikes. That was her problem at the end of last year, and it has continued to this year. I don't believe you will see her in the circle the rest of the year. She has played extensively at first base and in the DP spot.

has continued this year. She hasn't pitched at all this year, has she? Are you referring to practice or simulated games? In any case, pitching is a concern. We've got a good hitting team, and will need to hit, and pitch solidly, this weekend. It will be a good test for us and the gators.

She has only pitched once this year and it didn't go well

...[Aucoin] hasn't pitched at all this year, has she?....

Aucoin pitched in relief against Fresno State, gave up 4 hits and three runs in 1.2 innings. She faced 10 batters, got 5 outs, hit one batter, gave up 4 hits, and gave up 3 runs. That has been her only appearance in the circle this season. Throwing strikes was always a struggle for Gretchen.

At the USF tourney last season, she was being clocked high 60's - 70+ against USF. I saw it in person.

The next game, a ump messed up her head not calling strikes (I was right behind the plate watching and she then was taken out for Gaffin. I don't think she has pitched a truly good game since.

She had plenty of speed and power when I saw her.

To lose 5-0 to the gators with Moss and Bush pitching well...I'll take it!!! This bodes well going forward the rest of the SEC season

I posted the other day that we would need to outscore SEC opposition 6-5.7-6 10-9,etc and we would need to hit the ball like we have against lesser competition because we do not have a dominating pitcher against good teams.Someone replied that there are no dominating pitchers in college softball anymore......well I believe I just saw one tonite ....or are my eyes deceiving me ? At least we only made one error tonite.

to be excited about a 0-5 drubbing in which we got 2 hits and gave up three runs in the first inning. I wouldn't call that a good performance.

Agree armchair.I do not see anything about the game to get excited about.Pitching well ???? They gave up 5 runs ....do not view that as pitching well but guess that I have myopic vision.

This is the same team that has beaten down other top programs they have faced when other teams are throwing their better pitchers only close call they had was a 2-1 win against UCLA...they beat Michigan 8-0 who will end up in OKC...We basically threw Moss and Bush with Aucoin mixed in....got solid innings out of them...out of the 5 runs only 4 were earned it could have been lower than that if Geer was able to come up with that ball in the first inning

There are none...there are staff ace's but not dominating pitchers....watch a little more softball than just when Tennessee plays and you'll see
