Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 8

I think the regional is still intact unless we completely fall apart. This weekend we should be 2 and 1 but very easily be 0 and 3. Mizzo has the power hitters all at the top of the order and I think mostly seniors. They also have good speed as well. Our strikeouts continue to climb as already discussed. Not real sure why Moss is not pitching more but I would be surprised to see Bush any more unless it is a blowout somewhere or another. Must have been a reason she was highly recruited but I have not seen it yet. Our homerun production has all but stopped since we got in the SEC part of the schedule .

So I guess even a regional is slipping away at this point?

Way too early to say that. The LV's are 7-5 in conference play and 27-10 overall. At this point in the season last season the LV's were 7-5 and 27-9. Almost identical records.

Anybody expecting a sweep is clueless. We didn't even win up there in the past with teams who went to the WCWS. Even a series win would have been phenomenal up there. Give it a rest people.

Yeah, I expected a sweep. Missouri has three players at the top of the lineup that are as good as anybody in the country. Everybody else is average at best. Take away the unearned runs and the LV's probably sweep this series.

Maybe but I know they also gave up a few unearned runs as well. Not sure of the exact number but I would say without going back and researching it the Friday game they gave up a few. Still some games to play in conference but without looking I would think we would not be the favorites in many of them.

After listening to Karen, it sounds as if Geer will remain at third and Moss will get more opportunities. Just a week or two ago Ralph said Rainey would be pitching more. I guess they're just gonna' go with whoever is throwing strikes.

Speaking of which, the heart of good softball is throwing strikes, good fielding, and timely hitting. All three broke down for the LV's in this series.

Who makes pitching (change) decisions as far as a starting pitcher/relief pitcher, etc., are concerned? Ralph? Karen? Both? I'm one of those people who are baffled by some of the seemingly questionable coaching decisions that have been made in that department. This is nothing new, but...Why isn't Matty Moss pitching/starting as much as she deemed needed/capable of? I think Bush can be effective as well. I hope it's not one of those cliche Ralph's excuses like "I told her (Gaffin) that she's our only All-American, and she needs to take us home." blah blah blah. There were several games in recent weeks where I thought the presence of Moss/Bush in the circle might have helped us out a lot but the Weeklys decided to stick with Gabriel/Gaffin tandem. Is that a trust issue? I think Karen and Ralph need to start trusting their freshman pitchers more. Moss and Bush have great upsides despite displaying some inconsistency early in the season. I can see both of them really blossom as very effective pitchers. They need more experience to get better. Or we are owed an explanation as to what's going on.

Really disappointed by Leach's play in the field so far. I had high hopes for her coming into the season, but I guess she will calm down, mature and start fielding better given more time. Sooner the better! McSwain was just awful at the 3rd. Geer is a better choice there but probably not a long-term solution.

About midway through the SEC play, this team is performing just about what I expected. I think towards the end of April, this team will jell and play much better as a cohesive group both offensively and defensively. In the postseason hosting a regional is a key. Hope we get to do that...

Moss has pitched fairly well this year. I was surprised she didn't start this game. Obviously, the decision to pitch Gaffin again backfired. We just fizzled as the series went along. Disappointing. Who is playing in center if Geer goes to third?

The rest of our conference schedule is a ranked team except Ole Miss at the end of the year....We have Texas A&M, Auburn, Georgia....then the off weekend from the conference we welcome in Oklahoma to Knoxville.....brutal schedule man I'm looking forward to a regional haha

It's not just the starting pitcher (decision) which makes me scratch my head sometimes; mid-relief pitcher not to mention the closer decisions have been highly debatable at times this year IMO.

I've got a question for the guys that follow rosters more than I do..safe to say that there has been a switch in the top teams from west to east...is it because SEC teams are getting the best players from the west to come here or has the popularity of the sport fed into the HS ranks and better players are coming out of the east and south?

I am moving Vines to center because she can cover more ground. Unless Geathers comes out of her slump quickly I would put Gaffin in right and give McClain a good look in left. I agree Geer is the bandaid at third but we need to get a stud out of next years group and to play there. 3rd base has been a hard place to get anyone to take over since I don't know when. I remember that Spigner (sp) played there several years ago and finally transferred because Raven took it over and did a great job. Last few years no one took it and Konig tried to but did not which put us with McSwain giving her best effort most of the time. Moss has to pitch more.

Tennessee gave up a total of 6 unearned runs. Tennessee was outscored in the series 15-14.

Thanks LVJeff. Do you know how many Mizzo gave up that was unearned ? I thought they may have gave up as many as we did.

I don't claim to know any specifics about how Karen and Ralph arrive at any particular decision. Generally, Ralph handles the hitting and Karen handles pitching and defense, if I remember correctly. Karen is also usually the disciplinarian. Karen calls all the game pitches. I assume Karen makes pitching changes, but that's a big assumption - I've never heard it said one way or the other.

Regarding the pitchers themselves, from what little I have seen of Bush, she cannot throw strikes. And since she's a control pitcher, not a power pitcher, an inability to throw strikes is fatal.

Moss is more of a power pitcher who needs to develop speed and pitch variance - which she is doing so. She has had some trouble throwing strikes, but not nearly to the extent of Bush, or say, Aucoin from last season. I am not surprised Bush isn't pitching. Moss I am surprised. I am not sure what is going on there.

Leach will be ok, she's a freshman, she just has to slow down. I worry about Geer at third. Almost anyone is an upgrade from poor McSwain, but Geer didn't perform exactly stellarly there in her earlier stint.

The team is doing "ok" but I expected more from this season and am frankly disappointed. The team lost Lewis and Tarango to graduation and Aldrete and Koenig to transfers. None of these were irreplaceable. With the pitching back plus the new pitchers and players I expected an improvement over last season's record.

Well fast pitch softball has been around since the 70s and 80s it was really big out west...Texas A&M was the only school not on the West coast to win a national title until Michigan broke through in 2005....slow pitch softball was what the south....what helped the south with the softball explosion was 96 Olympics in Atlanta....SEC teams started fielding teams and of course most girls came from slow pitch programs...Pat Murphy at Bama got the ball rolling with better play in the SEC when he was hired to lead Bama's team in 96 or 97 not real sure....softball slowly gained popularity as time went as more teams moved to fast pitch....

Thank goodness AD's in the south saw a future in the sport as more and more females played it....then it became an arms race with facilities with money coming in from new tv deals with CBS and ESPN....girls on the west coast saw what was happening and realized that the south cared about facilities, fans, and education and hence a pipeline started south

Vines, McClain, and Geathers will be in the outfield. Defensively, this is very good. But McClain cannot hit so usually will not make a plate appearance.

The schedule was upgraded Jeff that's what happened...plus side of that is our opponents opponents are doing well from what I can tell so far...and our opponents are doing great

I doubt you'll see Gaffin back in the outfield since they want her to pitch so much. She either is the starting pitcher or the DP so she can warm up in the bullpen. Could change if Moss suddenly starts mowing them down and gets in the rotation.

Geathers needs to start hitting but I think McClain can maybe do better with more reps. Gaffin is going to be in right as much as Geathers. I as well am disappointed in where we are this season.

In 37 games, Rainey Gaffin has made 3 appearances in right and Geathers 32 and McClain 2.

Gaffin did start 6 games in center when Geer was at third in the early part of the season.

I stand corrected.

No worries there. I initially was concerned about relocating Geer out of the outfield because of what I thought would be a domino effect on player's moving around. I now realize that concern is unfounded. If Gaffin didn't have to pitch so much, who knows how much time she'd spend in the outfield, probably a lot more.
