Game Thread: Lady Vols V Wofford ; Tues 6:32PM ; Home ; SECN+

And here we go……😂😂😂😂😂
And totally disagree about KW not improving. At least get facts correct when promoting.

Kaiya improved more than anyone on the team IMO. She has been finishing much better this season, she is fast, plays great defense and puts pressure on the opposing team’s D both in transition and the half-court by attacking the rim.

Her shot also looks 100% better she obviously put in a ton of work. She’s been better from 3 and much better from the FT striped.

Unfortunately, when asked about a backup for JP in the post game, KJH said it is Kaiya and Edie. Period. Said they're already getting the reps in practice. I don't really understand why Jewel would not be considered. Probably bc of Jon lol.

So basically now we need JP to be wrapped in a velvet glove the rest of the season. A rare bit of good luck is that she's playing by far the best of her time here. I love the fact that JP actually jumps! Other than Rickea, and a little bit Jill, she's the only player on the team who actually has a vertical. She's also tough as nails like Jordan Walker, but more skilled.
I saw that and thought that does not bode well at all.

But I don't believe that plan can be set in stone. Seriously, Kaiya is developing into a solid player but when she is off the ball. Her skill set is not up to the PG task. Volfan2012 said she will be fine if she can get the bad decisions out of her system but when have we ever seen a novice PG do that in a few games?

When she ran point against Wofford, the whole thing stumbled to a stop.

The team is on thin ice with this injury for sure.

Yep, FT shooting, finishing at the rim, defensive positioning, overall shooting have all improved (a lot actually). Except for this those things, however, she is the EXACT same player (except stronger and more confident with the ball in her hands). But other than that....

So long as Powell can avoid foul trouble, injuries, illness, and fatigue and play with her characteristic high energy for 38 to 40 minutes per game, the loss of Destiny will not be a critical.

If it turns that Powell has any human frailties (which of course would be because Jon is Kellie's assistant), then the situation gets much more worrisome.

I will give Kaiya huge props for upping her game this season but she is not ready to play major minutes at PG against high caliber opponents; Edie could be fine putting a few minutes in here and there when other opponents are resting their main PG but she is also not ready for prime time.

So, yeah I agree that the Powell/Spear era must be upon us. It seems like the only potentially sustainable/workable option.
Kellie interview Edia-Wynn are going be Powell back up at point. I for one think Edia can run the point some . She can handle passing just fine. She just have to shoot enough to make her man guard her. That said Edia- getting playing time some of her shoots will fall for her. Spear get help Wynn and E Darby bring the ball up under pressure.- Its going be wise pickup for Tennesse at least this year having Edia for one of Powell backup. Wynn will be getting time at point and the other guards spots.Wynn defense is always been top of the team. But now her offence is coming around.

Kaiya Wynn earned a spot in the rotation early in the season to be honest and her skill-set could certainly help the team in SEC play.
Jewel is a solid ball handler and had an expanded role as the primary ball handler at Wake.
It makes no sense to have an efficient ball handler on the roster and not utilize their ability to help the team from Day 1.

Secondly, Tennessee best lineup is a big lineup with any combination of RJ playing the wing alongside Striplin, Puckett, Hollingshead, and TK mixed in with Spear as the primary guard paired in the backcourt w/ JP or Kaiya.
Jewel should never be standing around in the corner or top of the circle as a spot up shooter.
She (Jewel) is the same player that dropped 34! 34 points on the off-season #1 ranked portal player.

I don’t see how anyone wouldn’t be able to see this and just go with this 7 or 8 player rotation for majority of the minutes.

Here's my (present) depth chart:

Posit..player (1st, 2nd, 3rd subs)...primary responsibility
PG- Jazzy (Jewel, Kaiya, Edie)...Handle the ball
SG- Jewel (Tess, Rickea, Sara, Avery)...Gunner
SF- Rickea (Jillian, Karo, Avery)...Create own shot/drive, all around skillset
PF- Jillian (Sara, Karo, Tess)...Power player
C- Tamari (Karo, Jillian)...Pure post

Don’t you market yourself as a skills coach?
I do , but i have been a head coach from day one
I am a skills coach bc the Pistols put me in charge of "developmental" and I had to learn how to develop raw and improve novice players

But as a HC I had to do lineups
And,, just like Kellie herself, I don't expect everyone or anyone to agree with me in my lineups

This is quite a detour but okay.😆

Like I said, I don't expect anyone to agree or go with my words.
The Pistols Director put that trust in me and whatever I do I aim to be the very best at it
That goes for when I HC also

Most aren't as competitive as me
Hell, I can get into a sweat playing a game of checkers
But that's just me

Some of you are determined to compliment KW, she’s like the new Emily or Jessie. At least look at her stats before saying “she’s been better from 3”. She made a 3 against Troy and FAMU, nothing since, that’s 2 of 8 for the season of 11 games. The 3 she attempted against Wofford was an airball, she also had 3 turnovers in that game.

One could say much more concerning KW’s lack of Offense and basketball IQ, but it seems it’s ok to criticize Tess, Jillian, Avery, or others, but not KW. She has improved her free throw shooting, in her first year she missed the entire basketball goal on a free throw attempt. Her layup shots are mainly just tossed in the air in the vicinity of the basket, hoping to get fouled. She loses her person on Defense, but hopefully is improving on guarding the one she is supposed to be guarding.

Maybe Spear or Edie can help Powell play point, since we have very unfortunately and sadly lost Wells for the season.

Great win, but will be interesting how the players like Striplin, Powell, Hollingshead and Spear perform against better competition.
How many games do you need to see against better teams to realize that the Lady Vols are the Wofford to those teams.

She tries hard but she’s a walk on for a reason. We’re in big trouble if we have to rely on her.

Would like to see Kaiya get more of Tess minutes. Spear, Powell, Puckett and Striplin can all stroke the 3. I like that Kaiya attacks the rim and puts pressure on the defense and gets to the line. Tess % has been in the toilet all season and her defense is terrible.

At least Kaiya can keep someone in front and get a steal now and then.

Have you ever coached a women's basketball team ?
(Woman = adult female)

Powell may need to play some 40 minute games, or...

If I'm CKH, I'd think about a small package of plays with Jackson running the point.

PG - Jackson
SG - Spear
SG - Darby
Post - Puckett
Post - Striplin/Jill

Put the SGs in each corner. Have both posts come up in a "horns" (see below) look to screen for Jackson. Let Jackson get to the rim or kick to the corner if a double team comes. I'd run this for about 3 minutes early in the second and fourth quarters to give Powell a rest.

We need Spear to be a scorer that’s the only issue, if we had more elite scorers that we can rely on in big games u can have Spear at Pg, but with this roster u can’t do that.

A lot of people in here are comparing apples to oranges.
The main point is Tennessee has the best player in WBB who has only played in three regular season games this year after returning last night.
Next, Jewel Spear can run the offense and needs the offense built around her abilities on the perimeter regardless of any illusion of lack of elite scorers or whatever on the roster.

Jewel Spear carried her team in the ACC and scored a lot of points. She never has been or should be relied on as a spot up shooter.

Also, anyone trying to go to any length to diminish the ability of Kaiya Wynn is just talking nonsense.
Wynn should’ve been playing and is a player that can defend and match up athletically with any G in the SEC.

Jillian Hollingshead is in a similar situation. Showed flashes last year and will become a factor before the end of this year.

I mean Tennessee had a pair of players represent Team USA this summer.

Maximize their ability and the potential around them. Rickea Jackson and Jewel Spear offensively are as good as any tandem in the SEC.

The stuff I see this team struggling with has nothing to do with talent.
