Game Thread Lady Vols vs Albany

As usual when teams play us they have one player keeping them close 11 points and 8 rebounds. We need to ask her if she would like to transfer to Tennessee.

Well, that was an interesting half of basketball. Not sure if the coaching staff or the girls are stuffed with turkey like I am. They sure look lethargic, kinda like they don't want to be there! Someone needs to light a fire or this is gonna end up as a loss!

Now to rattle some of my "friends"...who did the best job coaching this half, Albany or Tennessee?

You can apply that question to every game we've played this year. We could realistically be sitting at 1-3 on the season right now.

If Holly would get the rotation down to 8 or 9 and define roles we might be able to play a little better. I think this is the best team we have played. Hopefully we can limit the turnovers and find a way to win this one.

And if four players are hanging on russell or graves, there are mix matches and gaps all over the floor to attack, nope we settle for a three, a long range three... U make no sense.

Sure there are gaps where you can get a little 10ft jump shot or penetrate and dish. The defense Albany is playing isn't all that good. This is solely about us not knowing how to attack a zone. Our passing and spacing are poor. We don't attack the elbow or reverse the ball. Jones handles the ball way too much. And we throw the ball away trying to get it in to players who are not open.

You are right that we don't have to always take the 3, but we have to be able to hit those when they are giving them to us.

Texas will pound us if we play like this.

Enjoy the second half, Albany is outrebounding us...and we 5-14 from the 2 points.

We are being outscored in the paint 16-8 and thats with a team who don't have a player over 6'2". ijs

The LV weak side help defense has been bad in this game. They have to rotate more quickly.

They want us to the take the 3 that's why we buy into, they leave the 3 open, cos they know our athletes playing around the rim would dominate, but no we want to prove they can shoot the three, rather than using our athleticism and attack the rim. But hopefully by seeing all this zone, we will be efficient against in the future.

But I don't see progress in our play, that says we don't know how to attack a zone, an open three is the shot the zone want us to take.

The only thing Holly has done right this year is to make the schedule. Thank goodness the first eight games are all at home and all of our opponents are cupcakes. Imagine if we had to play a real team or play on the road. It would be ugly with a capital UGH!

My biggest issue (outside of Holly's coaching) is that I feel Holly has forced this get the ball inside to Graves and Russell at all cost and that is hurting our chances at success. Instead of players taking the open shot (only one isn't afraid to take it is Kortney & Diamond) they are holding it until Graves or Russell gets open or they are throwing the pass into the crowd even if the pass isn't there. Also for some reason Te'a & Diamond are being restricted to play together (unless we need them to help bring us back) why is Holly so set on playing everyone is beyond me but it is going to really cost us (and Monday against Texas might be the day) very soon.

exactly, more hi lo action between Graves and Russell, then throw Jones in the high post. but if we quick shoot the basketball, we're not able to take advantage of our height inside or the open lanes that Graves and Russell create when their defender play behind, ijs.

Maybe that will get Mercedes going... we cut her through the zone from the key and caught them out of position. We didn't do that in the first half.

Pat, that last feed to Russell was a great inside interior pass. I can go with flashing the big girl outside-in and feeding her the ball like that.

I agree with that. They just played on the back row and tried to post up in the first half. They were never open to receive the ball.

I like Holly as an assistant coach...she is not head coach material either that or find an assistant coach that knows x's and O's...On our staff we do not have that dynamic offensive minded coach

They stay planted on the low block, instead flashing to the high post, mid post, and back screen for each other and rolling in front of the basket, I agree the post players have to create better angles to receive the ball...

And its ok, to not throw the ball to unable post players, and tell them why your passing the ball, post up, you are not open, cos sometimes players/post can't see behind them and help direct into open spots, great guard play ya know. lol
