Thanks for the shout out,Mikey.
Now comes "coach's" the test folks.
This is where the rubber meets the road...
The wins were convincing...For the players...
If I am to be convinced that coaching is the reason for a win, it will be on this game with OSU... because, this is a team that NO ONE gives us much of a shot of taking. That makes it a game that the coach wins if it happens. . . For OSU, Kelsey Mitchell has scored over 40 four times this season, once in this tournament. Last game. She did it from every angle, drives (18-22 on fouls shots from drives) , 3's (Hit 5 of 12) and mid-range (shot 6 of 19). Ended with 45 of OSU's 88 pts. Most of this was in the first half. . . If the game plan is to stop her, win or lose, my opinion of HW will be higher.
The one thing that I have considered a flaw dating all the way back to the earliest of my being a fan of UT, is that they don't have a "stopper" assigned to the opponent's star. This has been a weakness dating all the way back to Pat's era. We know who the opponent's star is, yet they get their numbers. The reason, they wait until that player gets the ball and then they see if they can stops her... Better off-the-ball defense, prevent her from getting touches. (We have two girls on this team, at guard who, if they are focused, can run with anybody (Cooper and Jackson). USE THEM for what they are built for.
There are two schools of thought... Let the star have her points and stop everyone else, or, face-guard the star and make the also-rans beat you... I am of the second philosophy. I would take our fastest and most physically gifted players and constantly face-guards their known go-to player. And raise a holy-war with any of my guards who "Wait until she gets the ball and then plays defense".... Nope, play intense, off-the-ball defense and make her labor for touches....Stop the "star",stop the galaxy.
