Game thread: LADY VOLS VS. ETSU

Good grief, can’t believe it, our team has the next game, day after tomorrow, THURSDAY, with ND on Monday night AT ND, on national tv. Who makes these crazy schedules? After looking at the stats, which always provide insight, there’s really not enough time to get into it. Hope they get some shuteye on the bus home tonight. Their plate is full, got to play smart, and fearlessly. GLV!

I watched part of the ND game and they didn't look any better than we did. They barely beat Fordham and ND's starting center injured her knee (Don't know how bad yet). Someone has to win that game and I think it will be us.
If Vaughn can't play, I believe ND will have only 6 scholarship players that will dress for our game and 2 of those are freshman.

While I’m sure she’s not their best friend like CHW, she can’t come in full Pat Summitt mode at the beginning. These kids didn’t know her at all. I expect to see her be much tougher as the year progresses. It will also be nice to see a team improve through the season instead of getting worse. Holly’s teams always digressed.

Not a good strategy. You have to come in tough from the beginning and ease up later. If you start soft you can't come back from that.

This is not a good start. I’m disappointed but obviously happy we won. I hope those refs never call one of our games again.

One minor thing I’d like to see Thursday is a play drawn up specifically to get Jess Rennie an open layup JUST so she can (hopefully) finally see the ball go through the net. Once she scores a bucket — ANY kind of score from ANYwhere — I suspect she’ll relax a little and stop pressing.
Didn't see her stats lvocd but hearing the
game announcer I could tell she was struggling. I didn't know she hadn't scored.

Tennessee did not have a player on their roster quick enough or fast enough to stay in front of Haynes Overton. Doesn’t matter how many stars they had. She single handedly forced UT to go zone. She was by far the best player on the floor tonight and it wasn’t even real close. UT is very big and very slow. They are in for a long season

This about sums it up. They are going to have to play a lot of zone this year. Their only hope is to play good, disciplined, error free basketball. Maximize your talent.

We have blown this in the last 3 min haven't looked good all night though
We have looked like a team with a new coach...Not impressed with the effort of the girls coached by Holly. Freshman are Freshman, the difference between this year and next year will be amazing. Key will develop more strength and more moves on the inside and the game will slow down for her. Horston will only continue to improve-She is the real Deal.

I would guess your friend neighborhood Warlock had something to do with the schedule along with UCONN before she was canned for malfeasance.

Saw more offensive rebounds in one game than all last season combined. Encouraging. Those turnovers, though...

That will be very difficult considering there is very little b-ball IQ on this team! The recruiting services swung and missed on several of these players!

No reason for it ! Put one of our McDonald’s 5 star AA and shut her down ! You’re telling me no one on that team could shut her down !?? Come on ! I don’t care if we had to go to an old school box and one . Ridiculous .

Yeah, we've needed a stopper for years...a defensive specialist who takes immense pride in shutting down these small guards and wings who go off on us to have career games and seemingly score at will.

Unless we're facing an unstoppable, dominant center or a future WNBA star like Delle Donne, nobody should be able to singlehandedly beat a Lady Vol team. It's been a trend lately that I trust Coach Kellie will address sooner rather than later.

Neutralize Haynes-Overton (or at least slow her down) and we win handily.

Looks like we should expect baby steps over giant strides, but we'll get there with recruiting help.

36 percent shooting is the story of the game. 45 percent shooting which is the norm for most good teams puts us at 85 points and an easy 17 point win. Rethink the offense got to take better shots the way were playing now is not gonna be an effective offense for this team. Forget the three other than two or three players 18 is to may when you make 3.

Defense was good if you can ignore the 29 fouls which you can't. That gave them 17 points without being guarded. Lucky for us they can't make free throws effectively we put a good team on the line that much gonna lose.

Game was a win that is all you take out of this that is important. Our offense is scary. Defense good only if we can guard without fouling.

Well daisy duke we are glad you signed up and blessed us to post since you seem to have a very nice set of krystal balls to predict the future.

Well, suckshortstop, glad to be signed up and my Krystal balls are amazing. I will check back in around March and see how my prediction has held up.
BTW, who is “we?” Pretty presumptious to assume you speak for anyone but yourself.

Couldn't watch the game last night. Don't remember seeing a box score where 5 different players ended up with 4 fouls each.

Game is posted on the site and yes a few players were in foul trouble well before halftime.

Was Haynes Overton recruited here? Another in state kid that would have done anything to come here! If she wasn’t offered because of her size someone missed! We have had small PG’s before! Just curious if she was offered by Holly?

Typically with players like her it’s not size keeping them out of top tier schools. It’s academics. There are a ton of great players at mid-major schools because they can’t cut the mustard in the classroom.

It’s hard for me to believe academics was the issue! But maybe! JMO Holly recruited only from players with high star ratings from these joke scouting services which seem to be wrong quite a bit as we can see from our roster.

The top 15 players like Davis and Green are showing that they were ranked appropriately. I think Horston will also show that she was deserving of the accolades. Key and Burrell were lower ranked and seem to be doing ok. KK has shown her potential, but is inconsistent. Most of the rest were not that highly ranked. The exception is Massengill, who is clearly a project. No idea why she was so highly rated in HS. But she has good size and athleticism, and could be a dependable contributor as an upperclassman with the right coaching.

Yeah, it seems that the big game atmosphere has caused her to press a little. I believe it was Jess who passed up an open layup (after receiving a nice feed) and passed off to a teammate who dribbled it out (fortunately...especially given the close outcome...I believe Zaay scored later in that same possession).

Jess looked pretty good with her passing and defense (obviously, no one could stop H-O), but her confidence seems to have been shaken a little. She's been playing against much older ladies since she was 16, so she has experience there. Hopefully, just freshman nerves like we're seeing with Jordan and Tamari.

When I lived in East Nashville her high school
was 2 blocks away from my apartment. Good
sized high school. Don't know the academic
rating by the state. Had step daughters who
graduated from there years ago.

My friend? Although I’m sure she would be a nice friend to have, I was not a fan of her coaching.
