Reynolds looks much better as a freshman point guard than Massengale did in my opinion. It is not about penetrating or making shots. It is about defense and making the offense flow. She is so good at making the offense flow even as a freshman. She should start Reynolds and Carter back-up at point, move Massengale to the two with Simmons as back-up, and Burdick and Jones the three, Graves and Harrison the four, and Russell the five. She could also run Harrison and Graves some at 5 and have Jones swing between 3 and 4. She should never run Simmons at point, the team just stands around because they don't know what she's going to do except wait for her to shoot the ball and then they're out of position to get a rebound. She is so disruptive of the offense. She gets her points but has a lot of turnovers and gets everyone else out of any offensive rhythm.
We ARE handicapped by the fact that Massengale is our point guard but we also rely heavily on her to score. I think that puts a lot pressure on her--and it is tiring. I don't know if it's true but I wouldn't be surprised if fatigue played a role in all her missed shots against ND after first 10 minutes. Teams that need to get a lot of scoring out of their PG tend not to be that good, typically. Not sure Reynolds is ready to be starting PG--that is a big responsibility, obviously.
I would be FINE with Simmons as the backup 2. Simmons is not a PG and otherwise she should NOT be taking more than 10, max 12 shots a game. She has been badly coached by Warlick--who was very late to recognize how costly her weak shooting and no-assist game has been.
We have been getting too little out of the 3 spot--Burdick has been bad most of the year. That should be Jones's spot--excellent athlete and good defender, and she can shoot a little, but she loses the ball too much--can't have that. We need Jones, and for that reason Warlick should be working her hard.
