Game Thread Lady Vols vs Gonzaga in the Sweet 16

Slydell gets my vote for Poster of the Week this week. :)

Third!

Sly picking off doofusses, one at a time.

Thanks, y'all. I just get tired of some of the posts in here. Lady Vols have some trully great fans and some, not all, of the posters in the forum aren't among them. Tip of the hat to the posters I quoted that are willing to eat crow and are actually enjoying this great comeback win tonight.

If we get to the Final Four and just compete with UConn and not get blasted then I will gladly say that I was wrong ( and I honestly hope I have to) but until then, I stick with my opinion that Burdick is really slow of foot and should never have been playing on the wing (and because we switch a lot on defense, she gets blown by when matched up with anyone other than posts) and Massengile is extremely lazy and Holly lets her get away with it.

The way Burdick played tonight deserves no criticism. She had to hold it down when Graves had 2 fouls in the post. She had a heck of game.

This was really one of Holly's best coached games. She kept the team in the game. Her strategy of continuing the press kept our defense aggressive and took away their height and inside advantage and accentuated our quicker guards. Excellent coaching by Holly.

Also, by keeping the game aggressive she accentuated our good foul shooting and their not so good foul shooting which was to our advantage. Excellent coaching.

Sometimes it's hard to keep in mind that this team has made it to the elite 8 minus four very talented players. You could tell burdick DID NOT want this to be her last game and I think Ariel played with as much intensity as I've seen from her all year. I honestly thought they gave up down 17, but they pulled through. What a miraculous comeback.

I have never understood why "grown" adults choose to constantly post negative comments about our team and our coaching staff. Of course we underachieve at times and being a devoted fan can be frustrating, but our team plays with so much heart and passion for this game.

The game has evolved so much in the past few years, and I think Gonzaga showed great heart tonight, and should be highly praised. Genuine Lady Vol fans see the whole picture (injuries, heightened competition, off shooting nights, etc.) and appreciate the overall commitment shown by our girls. It is disrespectful to the game of basketball to constantly critique those who play for the love of the game.

Great game Lady Vols! One step closer.

Even when we were down 17 with six minutes to go I still thought we could win. I felt like her strategy would start working. Gonzaga looked petered out.

I was at the game and I can tell you the crowd was very LOUD and obviously pro-Gonzaga. A tip of the hat to Gonzaga's fans. Gonzaga's height was such a problem for the LV's but Holly and the team eventually figured it out. I'll be back Monday. Look for the crazy guy in the orange shirt on TV. There are only about 100 of us here. It will be interesting to see if the Zag fans come back for Monday's game.

Oh, and the Maryland-Duke game was BORING. I kept hoping both teams would lose, but my understanding of the rules is such as that is not possible. Walker-Kimbrough for Maryland has an attitude, and I don't mean that as a compliment. Jones and Howard for Maryland will make things very tough for Graves and Burdick and Maryland's outside shooting was great against Duke. I hope it disappears before Monday's game.

Teams with that height have bothered us all year. With South Carolina we couldn't out quick their guards but did a good job today. This next game is going to be a battle of wills. Not just the players but also of the coaches. Holly needs to take down Brenda.

I found myself rooting for Duke. As much as I dislike McCallie, I despise Frese and as the game was being played I noticed Walker-Kimbrough posturing after every shot and that's another thing I despise.

:hi: to you for making the trip! The LV fans got some tv time during our game and were also very visible in the crowd of the Duke/Md game. Thanks for cheering hard enough to get the defense working

I agree. It took a while for our guards to start to take control of the game but that was a turning point, plus Burdick going Beast mode in her 2nd half post defense

I still think it is wrong for a two seed to have to play an 11 seed what was virtually a home game for them. Top seeds should get to play closer to home so their fans have a better opportunity to attend. I guess the fact that their were no top teams in the west made this scenario happen.

Great comeback by the girls, however I saw it a little different. Gonzaga choked big time. The LV did a great job of cutting the lead to 7-8 and applying pressure but from that point on it was a big choke. They were timid on their passes and weren't aggressively going to the basket like they had been most of the game. Their best FT shooter missed two big FTs. But sometimes you need that and I will take it every time. Let's go Lady Vols!

I hope they beat Maryland and get to Tampa, I will be there!

We can't complain about our bracket this year. We have a great opportunity to make it to the Final Four. Carpe Diem.

Good points; however, Gonzaga as an 11 seed should not have been in that bracket period to prevent this from happening. IMO, the selection committee never expected them to advance this far.

It's up to the other team to shut Walker-Kimbrough up. For me, I don't mind when players are having big games and letting it be known.

She played huge for Maryland. Hell, if I was in her shoes, I'd be fired up too.

I think our girls can handle her.
