Game Thread Lady Vols vs Gonzaga in the Sweet 16

This was really one of Holly's best coached games. She kept the team in the game. Her strategy of continuing the press kept our defense aggressive and took away their height and inside advantage and accentuated our quicker guards. Excellent coaching by Holly.

in the country is going to press. That's not great coaching--you have no choice. What are you going to do, sit back in a zone and let them pass the ball around till the shot clock is nearly expired? We scored two points--2!--in the first 8.5 minutes of the second half. Maybe with better coaching we would have scored...oh, 4, or 12. With great coaching you are not down by 17 to an 11 seed in the first place.

I'm sorry but Holly can't control the ladies missing wide open shots and lay-ups. They missed 11 shots in a row for goodness sakes! That's not on Holly. It's not like they were turning it over left and right "trying to get the ball inside" like they usually do...they only had 11 TOs in the game...they just couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. People blasted Holly for her interview she gave when asked what they needed to do to get back in the game during one of the last TV TOs because she said play better defense...well they definitely needed to do that. They had to stop them from scoring so they could have a chance to catch up. Maybe that's the obvious answer but what do you expect her to say?

Which was exactly how they got back in, once they bought in and started executing. It sure wasn't their shooting that got them back in - they mainly had to stop the Zags who were making ridiculous shots.

Also I would like to give a MAJOR Shout out to Alexa Middleton....she came in and hit some timely shots for us and applied AMAZING ball pressure that got a steal and a couple of turnovers for Gonzaga....she played well for a freshman in her first Sweet 16....her and Nared (once she settled down), played well!!! Proud of those young ladies!

love the way she passes the ball too

She had about 3-4 nice post passes off drives to the basket where Tennessee missed the layup. She looked really comfortable out there, which hasn't been the case for a large part of the season.
