Game Thread Lady Vols vs Kentucky

That's a good win for Tennessee. They took advantage at the low post and attacked UK's inside players.

Nared, Russell and Diamond really solid today. If these three continue to play at this kind of level, then Tennessee could be in the Top 15 in a hurry.

A lot more intelligent basketball than early in the season. Were not making the stupid turnovers and were looking for good shots for most of the possessions. Kentucky is always a good test and were certainly a lot better team today than at the start of the season.

I agree, everyone else seems to know their roles now and that is important. We still have to find a way to limit Russell minutes just a little and increase Nunn's as Nunn has proven she has knocked the rust off. Allowing Russell to rest and stay fresh could benefit us greatly!

I was delighted at the teams mindset when they got it down to four we really toughened up and made some plays.

In a game like today when she got the two inside players in foul trouble, I say keep her in as long as possible and increase the lead.

Against lesser teams, I agree that Nunn needs to play more minutes, if only to give Russell a breather. Plus, Middleton is up for those games and she should be able to provide extra scoring to allow Tennessee to limit Mercedes' minutes.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how they play against Miss State and South Carolina this year. I still think those are the two best teams in the league, but there's no reason Tennessee shouldn't be 3rd.

If Meme continues to play like she did today then she will stay on the floor. She needs to face guard the best player on every team every game.

We only had 9 turnovers Kentucky was scrappy but we look better in a zone and solid great win let's get our rival Vanderbilt and get in the polls

On the charge foul on Diamond: didn't the UK player look like she was still sliding to the right into position AFTER Diamond had already left the court on her little runner? I always thought when you get into position after the player with the ball had left the court, it was supposed to be a blocking foul - in this case, against the UK player. Am I wrong on that??
you are correct, she moved under her after she went air bound.

I wish there would be a penalty for teams that flop. Mercedes is still too tentative. She needs to guard the goal and always be ready to rebound. She needs to followup her shots like DD. Nunn is coming on strong. Everyone contributed.

I can't stand what they are doing on the bench after a basket. It looks like high school antics. It's like ha in your face. Pat would never allow that. To Quote Pat "act like you've been there".
Some of you are gonna say let them have fun. They can have fun when they make it to the final four.
Proud of them for leading though!!!
I disagree, remember Holtz claw and Ace'so kisses faces, seems like Holly can't please any of yall.

Every team now has a team celebration after a three is made. I don't see any problem. Would rather see them celebrating then sitting on the bench with a forlorn look because they're losing.

I liked the inline celebrations. . . . As long as they don't start that softball dugout "song chatter"

And Nunn in the first half also provided some good minutes.

Very nice to see how Mercedes game is evolving. She will never be the physically intimidating player like say a Griner but her finesse game is getting special. Her hands have gotten much better; she makes some nice catches and turns those into points. She really is capable of averaging 18-20 pts during the SEC season.

Nared is starting to play at an elite level. If she can keep going in tandem with Diamond, well have a genuine "Big 3." I think Diamond's thumb is still bothering her a bit but hopefully, it becomes less of an issue as the season goes on.

You can chalk this win up to the fact that I was in the arena, along with the beautiful Smallvoll1 and also Coach Jumper. Our expert analysis and critical thinking and referee cussing (okay, that was just me) enabled the girls to withstand all that the Mildcats could throw at them. The crowd itself was very very reserved imho. I've seen wakes with more excitement. :)

I found myself watching the ever widening bald spot on Coach Matthews head more than a few times. that poor boy needs a Hair Club for Men membership.

Very grateful to Smallvol and her hubby for allowing us to sit with them closer to the action than the upper deck ticket that we bought. That was quite a treat.

Sitting next to CoachJ is also very insightful. He really does know what he is seeing on the court and points out things that I'd have missed. You could learn a lot of bball with him.

My sis, my cousin and I enjoyed the game, the fellowship and a great meal at Calhouns on the way back from the game. Now if it would just stop raining and warm the heck up a little. ;)

Ok she's competing more and more with each game. I'm loving her. She's exactly what the LVs need moving forward.

What is she averaging with stats?

Off hand I think she's getting at least 6-8 pts and the same for rebounds in the last 5 games. Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

I could see that bald spot sitting across the court...whew! I had the same thought as gule.

The crowd in my section was pretty lively and cheered a lot.

It is rare when I can sit a whole game with someone and be convinced they know something about this game at the end of the sitting. Gule knows basketball. And what a really good guy to boot.

Gule, you made the game interesting and fun, thank you too.

smallvol. . . A woman who cares about what she looks like, loves basketball and is friendly and sweet. What a catch. Tom is a lucky man.

Didn't I notice Nunn and Russell both in the game at the same time some? They could both learn from each other, and perhaps become even better than individually. I'm wondering what those of you who know more think about the pluses and minuses of this?

I have been considering putting the twin towers out there for a while. Letting Russell play hi and Shaqui down low. I say this because Russell's set-shot from the corner is better and her mobility is better for driving off the reception. While Shaqui is hard to move out from under on a rebound.

On the other hand, Russell is so good at patrolling misses, that it would be tough not to put her down low. If I did this, I would gear Shaqui towards learning a pt-forward position.
