Game Thread Lady Vols vs LSU

I don't know why we were flat on defense letting Ballard get to the basket and then get the rebounds as well. She is 5'9" and we couldn't guard her. Holly talks about all the time we have spent on defense surprised no one played any tonight.

I've said it before on here but i just think it bears repeating--I just think the program needs blood from the "outside" to reinvigorate it. New blood, new fire, cough...new offensive schemes...cough. Its a concept that transcends sports really to businesses, organizations, etc. Change with the times or die off (looking at you GM). This isn't the 90's anymore and unfortunately the program was passed by in the 2000's by UConn.

Unfortunately I think the program will probably have to significantly breakdown for that too happen. There are just too many "program" defenders in Knoxville who seem hostile to anyone from the "outside".

LSU isn't a great team and I think that will be obvious later in the season. They lost by double digits to N.C. State, Rutgers and nearly lost to Michigan. Seems to me there could be several more losses in conference after tonight.

I truly believe that if Izzy was able to make that layup and got an ad 1 or made both free throws we could have either pulled off a win or heading to overtime right now because they would be no need to foul if the game was tied 78-78.

Very low energy by the team most of the night. They made a good comeback but you just have to come out and play hard from the beginning of the game.

was frantic--we scored, what, 44 points? LSU changed defenses, we couldn't cope with the matchup zone, Warlick sits Simmons too long, defense was bad and we lost.

Never like the idea of calling a TO on offense in the last 15 seconds unless absolutely necessary. It usually ends up as it did tonight, a mess from a defense that has adjusted.

Agree. I screamed at my TV "why didn't you have a play ready?!" They had taken a timeout not long before then. You draw up a play if you're down 3 or down 2 and have it ready. By calling that timeout, you are basically taking away an extra shot you might get if you miss and get the rebound. As it happened, we missed our one shot and that was it.

Man, those free throws Izzy missed really suck, too.

Not to keep harping on it, but I EXPECT to get screwed by the refs on the road in California. Why do we get screwed in our place by refs? I just don't get it. The Summit is only a tough place to play because of the fan support. Refs give us nothing.

Bruce Pearl never called timeout in a situation like that he came down and got the shot without them having the opportunity to set up.

We woke up with about seven minutes left in the game after we got down 15 points. A strange time to wake up.

Warlick was a UT assistant for 27 years or somesuch before getting the top job. She's a good person but stale as a coach and just doesn't seem to have it. We need a good, dynamic, and DEMANDING youngish coach.

Caldwell completely outcoached Warlick: puts in a matchup zone and we freak. Too many breakdowns on defense--and of course another game with 20 turnovers.

Given the hiring record of UT over the past five years, do you really want to take that chance? Might set the program back 5 years.

LSU really deserved the game. They came out ready to play took the ball to the basket and rebounded the ball. We stood around and watched them play. The Refs certainly helped this with a bogus charge call and a flop but wouldn't have mattered if we had come out to play tonight.

Through the years this has always been a close game. We won at their place last year. Seems like the game always comes down to the last possession.

The only complaint I have about Holly is she has a hard time firing them up to play. Coach Summit would have got them going a lot earlier.

Caldwell must be a good coach, but she always seems a bit too styled up and fashionable on the sideline for my taste--and she doesn't show much emotion. I get a sense that she's too caught up in her looks and her clothes--but she just beat us, so she's obviously got more going for her than just being fashion conscious.

This team has to grow up quickly

they are either coached up well or they are not. UT is not. We have not been a well-coached team for a long time--first because Summitt coached too long, got burned out and then ill, and now Warlick frankly is over her head. She doesn't have the chops to be a head coach--and she obviously wasn't keen to be one or she would have left UT long ago. Whenever we play another good team, we lose--and I'm quite sure this UT squad has more talent than lsu. That's bad coaching. Our leading scorer in the first half doesn't even take a shot in the second????Hello! We don't really know how to attack a matchup zone? We let lsu beat us by spreading the floor all night? BAD coaching.

Bad loss for Tennessee. This LSU team is flat out horrible. I watched them earlier in the season vs. my Louisville Cardinals at the YUM! and we flat out embarrassed them in the 2nd half. Largely due to Niki not making adjustments. We had a 26 point lead with 10 to go until Walz cleared the bench.

Here's to me hoping they are a different team by the time they play this team again in February. we broke their hearts at home last year and they have done the same to us at home this year on a night that was supposed to be a celebration.
