Game Thread Lady Vols vs Maryland In the Sweet 16

Agree 100%. But where do you start?

Total commitment, you accomplish what you are willing to sacrifice for. You can only accept excellence, anything short of that is unacceptable. That is the mind set of champions. We have lacked that in our athletic dept. For awhile now.

Turned the game on and the first thing I seen was a missed lay up and 3 turnovers. How many turnovers ?

As bad as this game is, Tennessee is still alive. They get 2 stops and score at the other end, and they're right in it.

Jesus Christ, Alyssa Thomas.

Another missed layup by Carter, but at least she's going to the line.

Carter's ability to hit free throws right up there with her ability to hit layups.

This program will not get back to the top until we hire a /good/ head coach. I'm not sure Warlick could even be described as mediocre. Turnovers? They've been a major problem for 10 years because our offensive execution and passing are third-rate--and that was true during the PS era. (I've been complaining about this for at least five years!) We do have athletes and what we need are basketball players. Losing massengale hurt but we are not a well-coached team. We completely panicked and collapsed last year against the first decent team we faced in the tourney--louisville.

You're exactly right. Turnovers have been this way for years. We are awful fundamentally. And that IS coaching. I've said for years we always had the best athletes, but no basketball players. Chris Lofton was a basketball player.

Carter is one of my favorite players but she had done nothing today. 0-5 from the field and 1-3 from the line.

Heck Texas played Maryland more competitive and kept it closer than this, this team is afraid of the big moment no one showed up today. disappointed in the team and coaching staff they all did a terrible job preparing mentally and physically for this game.

I'm sure Holly has stress that point to the players, but in terms of the structure of the team what do you do? Is it coaching, do we have the wrong players for our style of play?

Carter needs to be locked in the gym and practice finishing layups. She's been invisible

I hate when a player is lauded for their "defensive" skills, while being unable to consistently contribute offensively...especially when the person they're guarding is having a field day. When your team consists of a "defensive specialist", a player who shrinks at the sight of a decent team, a player in the midst of a season long funk, and your best player shackled down and in foul trouble, it's no wonder that Tennessee' offense is reduced to Simmons jacking up shots, getting fouled or Tennessee getting the o-board so they can lather, rinse, repeat.

Burdick and Carter in particular aren't even looking to score today.

One thing to stop is catchy slogans: "The grind for nine". I could be wrong about this but do you think UCONN is doing stuff like that? Is that going to be our slogan for the next 10 years if it takes us that long to win another one. I remember winning number 8 in 08' and some we're saying then number 9 in '09.
