Game Thread Lady Vols vs Maryland In the Sweet 16

I keep reading about Tenn needs Wilson. Tenn has a great roster of players and Russell and Harrison need to learn to play together. Graves was great last season.Burdick is a good player. Tenn does not need Wilson to go to the FF. What they need is to play as a team, share the ball, stop dribbling all over the place and make more passes. Passing will eliminate all those turnovers. It all starts with defense and with a height advance over most teams Tenn needs to play perimeter defense against teams with good shooters. The bigs will take care of penetration. Help defense is another need Tenn lacked this season. With quick guards and a height advantage you shouldnt lose. Next season imo is a telling season. Playing the game as a team has to be the one change Tenn makes or next season will be just like this season.

Tennessee needs a player that demands the ball. Actually, they need more of those. You can't have 3 players who don't want to shoot.

Tennessee loses Simmons next year. Her and Harrison were the only ones with the stones to put the team on their shoulders after Massengale got hurt. Now it's just on Izzy. She needs help. Having Massengale back next year will help, and hopefully Wilson (or a healthy Jannah Tucker) will be that third player. If Russell can learn some offensive moves or Graves can channel her freshman self...even better. But Tennessee was not going to do anything without more players willing to step up.

Okay, It is now time to bury the dead.

.... and for all those ladies who completed their degrees with honor.

Time to rebuild.
Until the UNC fake classes problem dies down, may be wise not to talk about every player graduating. Investigation is widening beyond UNC to other schools. I heard orange has been mentioned. The further over 78% the graduation rate goes, the more suspect it becomes.

Anyone else in the final four from the SEC...no didn't think so. Don't go around thinking the SEC is world beaters without Pat Summitt at the helm, not gonna happen.:cray:SIGH

Par was struggling toward the end of her tenure, even before the dementia was revealed. A 22 pt beat down at the hands of Ball State in the 1st round in front of a home crowd in Bowling Green showed the wheels were starting to come off already. Our teams have looked unprepared for big games going on 5+ yrs now. The 3 hrs of driving and money I spent going to L'ville on Sunday was only worth it when I got to watch UofL and LSU. It's obvious Caldwell is not the answer either. When a change is to be made, the first and last call should be to Walz. He's already proven he can coach circles around Holly, evident by last years Elite 8, as well as every coach not named Geno, and that's only due to having a weaker roster. Give him UT's resources and we're regulars in the Final 4.

We're currently in our longest drought between Final 4's, meanwhile UConn is headed to their record 7th straight Final 4 and UofL is likely headed to their 3rd in six years. This program has fallen off substantially whether some want to admit it or not. UofL has played for a NC twice since we've even made it to the Final 4, UofL and not the men! Let that sink in for a bit. UofL is currently a better program than UT.

Our program started showing cracks a LONG time ago. Offensive execution has been TERRIBLE for more than 10 years--never been fixed. Offense was not exactly a PS strong suit. She won with defense and rebounding in the early years of women's basketball, when nobody could score, so that was a smart strategy. That doesn't work today--far more good players and good coaches and teams can and do score. We were in a pretty big drought before we landed Parker, who got us another couple of titles, but after her departure we really fell off--lots of mediocre recruiting and PS was just way past her prime and game had changed. Warlick is not the answer. We need a tough, smart, demanding coach. Our staff is not smart, and our players are not smart. If they were, we wouldn't have 20 turnovers a game.

I would love to have Walz at UT but I think there are several reasons he will never come here.

1) As you have alluded to, U of L is right now a better program than UT.

2) Walz has built the UofL program. It is his baby alone. He comes to UT and steps in the shadow of Pat.

3) There are no facilities advantage at UT. Probably a draw. The Yum Center is one of the top venues in the country.

4) Recruiting to the ACC is easier than the SEC. The ACC is a basketball conference and always has been. The SEC had a good, deep year but has lacked a big dawg to impact the national scene since 2008.

5) This one is gonna piss somebody off, but I'll put it out there. The women around the Lady Vol program will roll over in their grave before a man coaches UT. End of Story. For that reason alone you can forget ever getting Walz, Mitchell or any other man.

I agree on all points. This weekend was my first time in the Yum Center and it's absoulutely gorgeous. I can't imagine there's a better arena in college basketball save maybe FedEx Forum and that doesn't really count.

The support he's built there is amazing too. They've been the 2nd largest draw in WBB only behind us the last few years and there had to have been 12-15k people there on Sunday for their game. They play an exciting brand of ball that not only gets up and down the floor but has set plays that work! Such an anomaly compared to what I've seen for the last 10 yrs out of UT.

Walz is a KY guy through and through, he's an hr from where he grew up and holds two degrees from KY universities. He's also employed by one of the top AD's in the country who has made UofL one of the best overall athletic programs in all of college sports.

The one "plus" is he would never directly follow Pat. If every other coach in the country and our own AD and fans are worried about the shadow of Pat and offending her, I'm not sure we'll ever climb out of the mire. This program needs new blood, not from the Pat bloodline.

Tennessee has a man coach right now.

I doubt if Walz would ever move to TN. He has such a good deal where he is. Also, I can't believe TN fans would like to have him since his hero is Geno. They are great pals.

Regarding your man coach, Lockwood wouldn't look very good in a dress.

I don't think it's as difficult to follow a legend as everyone thinks. The key is to pick the right person for the job. One recent example is uconn replacing legend coach Jim Calhoun with Kevin Ollie. Everyone loves him and he's in the Final 4 this year.

To me the problem at TN is nepotism. All the people considered for the job seem to be TN connected. Is that really necessary? Perhaps it is, but if no one in house is qualified it creates a bit of a quandary. When I hear the name of Tyler Summitt come up, I just have to smh. In the scheme of things, Tennessee just isn't that great. Horizons need to be broadened.

So Calhoun hiring former player Kevin Ollie is your example for why Tennessee shouldn't limit their HC search to candidates with an affiliation to the university?

I'm not sure if you were trying to be ironic on purpose, but perhaps you might want to think of a different example.

I agree about Tyler. However, he was just hired as HC at La Tech now. If he builds a successful program and shows that he can successfully rebuild a program, then he absolutely should be a consideration for future HC if he's put in the time and earned his credentials.
