Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Mizzou. ; Sun Feb 2nd ; Away game; 3 PM Eastern; SECN+

In the presser after the Vandy game CKC said it's a hard and fast rule that you go to rim first and shoot 3s second on the road. Jewel who was sitting beside her, dutifully repeated rim first on the road but when a reporter questioned her about it, she said it is a fine line and is confusing for a 3 pt shooter in game action.
I just rewatched the press conference. That’s not they said, especially what you claim that Jewel said.

It's exactly what they both said. CKC said it several times - rim first on the road. In response a question about how a 3 pt shooter handles that, Jewel said she knows it's layups first on the road something about a fine line and figuring it out and not jacking 3s first. I don't remember the exact verbage.

This was the Vandy post game, haven't seen today's.

1) No it’s not. 2) You’ve just changed your alleged “quote” a lot in pretending to repeat it, and it’s still inaccurate. Why would an LV fan alter quotes to support a negative opinion?

3:56 - CKC talks about layups first on the road. Repeats lay ups first on the road at the very end. Didn't use the verbage hard and fast rule just said it twice like they should know it's a hard and fast rule.
4:22 - In answer to a question about determining when to pull back on shooting 3s, Jewel talks about it's a fine line mentally, understanding your role, and like coach said layups firrst on the road.

The players, including Jewel, are clearly confused about offensive priorities,

That's kind of dumb, there are good shots and bad shots, they do not change based on the venue.

They may be a year away from being able to run exactly the offense they want to run. Meanwhile they seem in kind of a limbo btw the more attempts/more possesions theory and working for better shots. We just need some better shooters.

1. Transcribe verbatim the actual quotes. 2. Type verbatim what you wrongly claimed was “exactly” what they said. Everyone can see for themselves. You’ll have to do this three (different) times since you’ve now put forward three different embellished and altered misquotations, each of which you impossibly claim are accurate.

Underline the things in your alleged “quotes” that were not said in the interview. If you don’t understand this, I sure hope you aren’t a UT grad.

And don’t say I am nitpicking or whatever until you post the the differences because that’s where your manipulation and misquotation are identified.

I detest layup lines,,,practicing halfspeed layups then trying to make them at breakneck speeds is like practicing for the Indy 500 on a highway

They're not ideal, and they may not even do them in practice. But they definitely need to do SOMEthing to get better at close-range shots.

I would love to sit in on three consecutive practices to see what they're doing, or maybe NOT doing. The layup misses have pretty much been an issue the entire season, so that makes me think it's not being worked on enough, or properly, in practice. Something is super wrong there, and i hope the staff re-thinks how the team practices those.

I thought before the season started that this would be point we'd be starting to see the system smoothing out a bit, and that we'd be rolling. Instead, we seem to have taken some small steps backward -- and it's obviously not just because of the schedule getting tougher. We came dangerously close to a bad loss today, and the team looked visibly unhappy/confused to me, and that was NOT something that I expected to see at this point. It's worrisome.

I'm thinking there needs to be a bit of a mid-season reset for everyone on the team and staff and for everyone to look for better ways to get the job done. Whatever they've been doing in practice to practice shooting and getting shooters shots, do something else. Shake things up while there's still time!

Its ok to practice mechanics and technique at half-speed, but you must practice proficiency at game speed.

I have drills for attacks from the arc, half-court, full-court and receiving a full-court pass-feed,,,all at full speed.

I believe 10 at gamespeed is better than 50 at halfspeed

I may be wrong but the Lady Vols offense seems to be more run and gun instead of running set plays, like pick plays. Today they tried some drives to the hoop when the paint had multiple defenders. They also shot some crazy shots. They just looked all over the place.

Not sure defense can be discussed in same sentence with Puckett and /or Darby.

Quote from KC in postgame was telling and I thought incisive :
““ no offensive production except off steals”
I think Puckett could be a really good defensive on a big post player. Not fast enough for the perimeter, but strong enough to guard the post. Here major contribution is probably her leadership, if you notice she is always point to teammates getting them in the correct place. Great young lady, talked to her several minutes at one of their earlier fall practices. Tess has made some nice contributions, I think the conditioning has helped her, she also has trouble guarding a quick perimeter player but is giving her all for Tennessee. I'm glad they both stayed.

Kim did mention a few days ago that they were finally getting the practice guys back after not having them for a while, and how much they missed their speed. I can't remember how long it had been, but I remember thinking that had to hurt the team's preparation a lot.

It was like a month

This was my first time seeing the team in person this season here were the main takeaways:

The team can be hesitant regarding pace and shot selection.

Jill was directing and encouraging teammates to shoot the ball. She’s a leader and calming influence on the court. Hoping she can continue to grow in that area.

Cooper had a great game but her on-court demeanor isn’t the best. At times she appears disengaged on the bench. Not sure if she’s dealing with things off the court or not. Wishing her the best.

Puckett has lost confidence in her shot. Maybe she can get up some extra shots because we will need her.

Boyd’s speed from TV translates to in person. She doesn’t even realize how quick she is. Once she learns how to be more intentional about picking her spots, she can become a true lockdown defender.

On the flip side, Spear’s lack of speed is noticeable. Not sure if she’s hampered by an injury but it impacts her getting open and taking care of the ball.

Overall, it feels like we are still adjusting to the new system and lack the team speed and 3-point accuracy to make it most effective. Next year, I think we will see improvement.

What I did find troubling is the mass substitutions don’t result in this extra burst of energy from the subs. They play with the same energy level as the players they replaced.

We have potential to make noise in the tourney, but we need to become more intentional with our defense and some players have to emerge as leaders on the floor.

Great post, NoBackBoard.

I hadn't really thought about it, but you're right about there not usually being a noticeable burst of energy right after substitutions. I will say that sometimes there seems to be bursts -- like when they force 10-second violations or get steals/scores off of opponents' inbound plays -- but for the most part, they do seem to be either exerting ALL of their energy all the time (less likely) or they've all figured out how to conserve energy as a team. When the system is working best, the team's energy is always uniformly high. When it's not, it's noticeable.

And yes, sometimes Cooper's body language is ... different. Not sure what's going on there. She often looks unhappy, but it may simply be how she holds her game emotions.

All your observations seem spot on.

A lot of ppl think they do not have the energy level but if they are going all out, they will be faster and quicker after a rest. That's why Football went away from players playing the whole game O & D. The players can say their giving it their all but their all in the 1st quarter is a bit faster than their all after their heading for 30+ some minutes of play. I bet that is a SEC record for 10 second calls in a game so somebody is putting a little out, it may look like just going through the motions to the fan but IMO they were bringing it most of the time. They are still a work in progress making some mistakes but its like my old coach said if you make a mistake do it at 100% we will correct the mistake but I want you at 100.

Tennessee’s defensive tenacity was turned up a notch yesterday.
We as spectators have to factor in that players are dealing with the influence of officiating as well as opponents making decisions in-game versus what they’ve seen on film.
I think they have to dial it back at times to not get called for touch fouls. Teams seem to get away with more contact guarding us than the LVs are granted on defense.
If this was football in yesterday’s game on the road the forced turnovers, steals, 5-second violations, 10-second violations etc. would be equivalent to a 5 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles performance in a single game.
That’s almost unheard.
That’s elite level defensive pressure.
As for Talaysia Cooper often times spectators simply see things or develop a sense of a problem with people from the outside looking in. You could be right, wrong, or some of both. You may kind of forget at times that not all people smile or show excitement externally.
I rarely ever saw Rickea Jackson or Tamari Key smile or show much emotion on the court for years to be honest. From all indications, both loved their time at Tennessee.
Back to Talaysia, ever highlight I’ve watched from high school games to the McD AA game to now at Tennessee her on-court and sideline demeanor has been the same. In my opinion, I think she’s happy and enjoying her time at Tennessee.
I think she’s just focused and her personality is even keeled on and off the court.

Do you detest players shooting free throws with no crowds or daily shots with no defenders?

Coop actually doesn't hold her emotions much at all so far. Emotional and shows it, probably not going to change just needs to learn how to positively channel it. Or show it less. I'm sure the staff is aware and working on it. I noticed when she fouled out late in the game she tried to join the huddle and CKC sent her pointedly - with the finger point and everything - to the bench.

I'm a broken record repeating how effectively young Coop is. After two years of watching, she's really a freshman carrying the whole offensive load for a new team, new system, new coach. It's alot. Hopefully she's coming along in that aspect of her game.

Speaking of on court behavior, we've given Zee a pass I'm not sure she deserves. If Mizzu wasn't so thoroughly awful at crucial fts, Zee's tech, her second for doing the exact same thing, could have easily cost us this game. Again, no doubt it will be addressed fm within. Can't keep happening.

I don't know if shooting is a concern of the staff surely it is. If we had just shot what almost any decent team can 43 percent we win 89 to 71. Missouri shot 46 percent had double digit less shots. Three point shooting was good for us 10 of 25 40 percent around the basket we could not make a five footer, a layup even when no one was guarding us. Latham shot an uncontested layup completely over the goal on one possession. No future for this team if they can't find a way to shoot a better percentage. We can manage to scrap by Missouri or maybe Georgia not going to beat any of the good teams. I don't know what is causing it, but layup drills and working on shots around the basket has to be a priority.

I thought the floor game was excellent except for not getting back on defense on four or five plays. Shooting the ball is pathetic.
