Game Thread: Lady Vols vs. No. 1 South Carolina; 7PM Thurs, ESPN

I had obligations that kept me from watching tonight. Just catching up and seeing TN led by as many as 10 points?! It seems like we played well for a while. What changed in the game that led to SC coming back from that?

What has happened to Arkansas?? They are not very good. I know we recruited a couple of players hard on that roster.Maybe grab a transfer or two?

Everyone has their own viewpoints (obviously) but I am very proud of our team for playing so hard.
Love these Lady Vols!

I totally agree they all played hard. But we don't have that talent advantage in as many of the on court player position match ups as year's ago... and bball is about match ups. Having a healthy Key on the court would have been a big plus in many games, but that didn't happen and it doesn't solve the point guard dilemma.

I often try to watch the replay, and what I believe cost us greatly in this game was on offense "we didn't play smart on way too many possessions". Add up the coming up empties - on early shots/impatience, too many possessions where RJ your scoring star didn't even get a touch, wrong person taking wrong shot and even the right person taking impossible wild shots, inbound errors, etc. Hey, you can't do that against marginal competition, certainly not against #1 and you shouldn't be doing it in every game late in the season (coaching, or lack thereof, perhaps?).

I give Striplin some credit, she hit a few deep that pleasantly surprised me. RJ super fluid. Horsten was super in 1Q, but then tried to do too much and got eaten alive until late in the game (played hard, but).

Horston being Horston in the 2nd quarter and Kellie not having a clue how to coach in the 2nd half.

Emotion ran out,talent took over..

I figured they would play tight in this one. It affirms my thinking, however, that we could absolutely ride the right bracket into an elite 8. That 6 seed projection in ND is absolutely a bracket we could win in weekend 1.

I haven't seen the full game yet, but looking at the box score I can see the Guards for SC both have double digits points and Tess Darby had 2 points. IF Tennessee wants to win, Darby has to be in double digits and hitting 3s. In a big game, Tess seems to disappear, and the opposition guards seem to go off for big scores. We need a defender who can lock down the opposing guards or make life difficult for them. We need Tess or our other guards to run their guards around, into screens, do backdoor cuts, and take some gas out of their tanks. Ours seem to be statues in a spot up so their guards only have to cover 1 maybe 2 spots on the floor. In big games against good players, we need to force their guards to defend all over mid court and our big players need to be bumping them and slowing them down.
By the looks from some of the highlights, Striplin had a good game. What happened to the bench? 6 points. We need them to score at least 15-20 points combined to be a threat.
10 points and 12 points in 2 quarters isn't going to win many games especially against good teams. Good teams find ways to turn up the heat and overcome bad starts see SC, Stanford, and UConn. Pray we don't get Iowa in the tournament because Caitlin Clarke will have 40 from what I've seen in the big games this year.

Just looking at the box score. We really missed Key tonight. Very rare for us to get out rebounded like that. Cardozo and Boston are the backbone of SC. I believe TK could have made a big difference tonight. Striplin is playing out of position and glad we’ll have Hollinghead next year and Boston will be gone.
How was the crowd tonight? Hope the recruits got to see LV support at it’s best!

I am about where I was before the game. This is one I couldn't imagine winning, especially with SC coming off a close call which I am sure got their attention. Before the game, I figured anything around 10 points or less of a margin would be a sign of improvement, anything high teens or worse would be a real disappointment, and here they are somewhere in the middle.

Rickea was amazing that she could still be that skilled on offense against the best post players. It is becoming increasingly aggravating when something switches in Horston and she becomes a head case at pivotal times in the game. She gave tremendous effort in the first half (I think 10m of her 11 rebounds were in the first half). but forced things at times, which is understandable given the competition. In the third quarter she completely lost poise and lobbed impossible shots early in the shot clock rather than look for teammates. This is the stretch in the game where SC went on another run and put the game out of reach. The literal moment that Horston was pulled, that is when we started making an impressive mini-comeback and played with more poise. When Horston came back in towards the end of the game, immediately she commits 2 turnovers in a row and our momentum was completely lost. Before then, it looked like we might lose by about 6 to 10 points, which would have been perceived as a step in the right direction. We can't afford to mentally lose one of our best players. When I got back to the car and hears the Horston was player of the game, I imagined that whoever chose that missed the 2nd half completely. I have loved Jordy as a LV and have defended here as recently as a few days ago. I really thought she had made significant progress in battling this head-case tendency, and the few games which she regressed seemed like the exception. Now they seem like they are becoming the rule again. We need her at the best so we can go on some type of run in the tournaments.

I sum up our offense as all too often being the wrong person, taking the wrong shot, at the wrong time, from the wrong spot.

Seemed to me they began to rush the offense. I remember Horston knocking down a layup with 2 seconds on the shot clock but that was rare.
