Now, I feel like I don't know what I see. I don't know if its Holly. I really don't. Parity has been coming for a long time -- can't just put on jerseys and automatically win games like teams once did. But whatever it is you need to win, UT doesn't have it right now. Whatever it is they are, whatever it is they want to be, we haven't seen it yet. Or, maybe we have.
If it were easy then Pat wouldn't be the icon that she is.
That having been said. There is no excuse for how this team is playing. Holly doesn't have them playing anywhere near their potential this season. Last year we had better chemistry and less talent. This year we are just flat out awful, and much worse than our record indicates.
There is not a damn reason in the world we can't play tough, and smart, like some of these teams we are playing against. And we should expect nothing less. It was understandable before when we were a top team and had all the pressure. Maybe you get a batch of players who can't handle it. It happens.
Well, we haven't been a top team in a long, long time and several classes of players have had the same problem so it is obviously something that is endemic to the program. Our brand of basketball is synonymous with stupid, half-assed, scared play where the team plays tentatively and looks for every reason to fold rather than looking for ways to win. With the exception of last year, we just play without much heart.
It hurts to say all of that, but it is true.
There is no use putting it all on Holly. This problem predates her--- and there is no hope of a coaching change for years yet anyway. So we just have to hope she figures it out.
One of the many things this team needs is toughness, and Holly may just be too nice to give the team that. If it is true she even let Elzy skip a scout against KY last year because of mixed loyalties to her old players then there is little hope Holly will ever grow into the type of tough minded coach who demands 100% commitment that we need.
We just have to hope she grows into the job as quickly as she has grown into those extra large pantsuits she is sporting on the sidelines these days.
