Game Thread Lady Vols vs Ole Miss

I know it's difficult for some to imagine that it's possible to like and love someone and also be honest about them, but I guess I'm just a little more able to look at this objectively than they are.

Holly's recruiting ability is outstanding! Next to Pat there's noone else who has been associated longer with, and who's held a deeper abiding love for, Lady Vols basketball than Holly.

Holly Warlick is a Tennessee institution! There is no question about that. Never has been, never will be any questions about whether she's capable of helping young high-school aged kids grow into strong, capable, community-conscious college graduates who will go on to have lives everyone can be proud of. Holly can deliver on those promises.

She has a big, kind heart that makes her a great assistant coach who is perfect in the type of support role she played for decades. But it appears that her brain isn't wired to understand the basketball part like all the great head coaches do. I know it's hard to admit that, but it's time to accept that Holly's strengths are in being a "support" staffer.

Holly Warlick is simply in over her head and has literally told everyone many times that she doesn't know the answers. Why don't people believe her OWN WORDS?

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Holly the person (Dr. Jekyll), Holly the coach (Mr. Hyde).

Bingo.

There are hundreds of "Fahr Holly" posts on here, but no viable options mentioned for replacing her. Guess what?...

Geno and Muffet aren't coming here.

Gail G and Nell have expressed no desire to return to a college head coaching position.

Brenda, Kim, Jeff, Dawn, and Vic all have good things going where they are now.

Tamika and Kara don't want to be coaches.

Other people in Pat's coaching tree like Nikki Caldwell and Kellie Harper are barely succeeding where they are.

And the suggestions to hire Tyler are the most moronic things ever seen on a sports forum.

So before we decide we need to show Holly the door, someone had better put a viable replacement in our sights, because we're likely to end up with somebody who's marginally successful elsewhere or an unproven AC who'll take 5 years to get acclimated to this program and being a HC. If you want a great example of this, look at the list of candidates the Yankees interviewed after firing Girardi last fall and who they ended up with.

I believe you can find a better LV coach by following the principle that Georgia used to hire Kirby Smart as a football coach. Hire an assistant from a winning program. I am talking about an assistant that is actively involved in the offensive and/or defensive strategies for his or her team. CHW did not fit this bill. She was a go-between the coach and the players for CPS. However, everyone knew that Vic Schaefer was Gary Blair's defensive guru when he was at T&AM. Now he is the best WCBB coach in the SEC, probably. I believe a better LV coach can be found if this principle is followed.

Waite till next year and see how Gary Blair's team dose. He will lose all 4 of his starting guards and may lose his 5. Mississippi State will be in the bottom half next year. After the Tennessee game he said to win in the SEC you needed the best guards which he will not have next year. I so hate that we will loose Jaime Nared, Mercedes Russell and Kortney Dunbar. We will only have two senior players next year Meme Jackson and Cheridene Green if she stays as a 5th year player.

UNless CPS was lying, there were quite few wins where she credited Holly for the game plan. I love how people "invent" the Holly they need to fit their preconceptions. A few years ago, it was Holly can't recruit, it was all due to her assistants;

I get the disappointment with the Ole Miss game and the big sag in the middle. But, the LVs, Meme and nared in particular missed bunches of open jumpers and lay-ups. The offensive execution was working pretty well. You hit those shots and then you can press Ole Miss, whereas misses let Ole miss get out on the run. And the LVs were hitting their open shots in the early part of the season so you can't say that there fundamental coaching that is leading to poor shooting.

We will see if the LVs are just in a bad stretch that teams sometimes get into for no real reason or if they stayed mired in the level of play. I am reserving judgment Holly until we see how this goes.

Likely candidates? This fan base will never give an AC the time to mature into a successful HC before demanding their firing anyway.

Glad someone else made this comparison. Holly reminds me a lot of Richt. Nice guy, won a couple of SEC titles early in his Georgia tenure but none in his final 10 seasons there. He was good for 8-10 wins a season... pretty good, but not elite. Fans were divided on whether that was his ceiling or if he could ever elevate the program to a championship level. Ultimately Richt was fired and Georgia hired a promising up and comer who in just his second season took what was already a great program further than his predecessor. He made college football's "final four", took college football's "UConn" to overtime in the championship game, and has the program poised to pose a serious challenge to the Tide in the foreseeable future.

The Lady Vols need to find their Kirby Smart....

It would be great if we could hire an assistant from a program with national and conference championships. If we could get one with multiple Natty's and several more Final Four appearances we would be rockin'. Don't know why we didn't hire someone like that to begin with.

I know, if only there was a program like that in women's basketball.

There is a long history of vitriol between Fulmer and Alabama. Did you happen to notice where he got the new football coach..... ?

Let's see...you mean the program whose last 2 assistants who went on to become head coaches have managed to amass a .367 record in the old Big East/AAC with one WNIT appearance, and a .633 record in the A-10/AAC with 2 second round NCAAT appearances 7-8 years ago?

Yup, we should have jumped all over them when Pat became sick. They'd have been a big improvement over CHW. Wait, maybe we can still entice another assistant away from that program's bench.

I was at the game and watch Russell a lot. Holly needs to take her out and give her more rest, she gets tired quick and need more rest. No more then 30 minutes a game. she played 37 tonight. Holly needs to call more times out to rest here also.

Or an improved fitness regimen from the Fitness Coach that she must adhere to. She is usually the last one across the midcourt line when getting back on defense

This is true, but playing under the basket she has further to run then the guards. She runs the full length of the court. This is why she needs more rest. If you talk with any football coach they will tell you it takes the linemen much longer to recover then the linebackers or defensive backs. Big people like Mercedes Russell need more rest then people like Jaime Nared who can play 40 minutes.

And Derek Dooley was one of Saban's former assistants. So was Kirby, Dantonio, and Jimbo Fisher. What's your point? It's all about finding the right candidate and the right fit. But please tell me more about how Pat's extensive coaching tree is currently dominating women's basketball....

She also gets hit, pushed, grabbed, held, and doubled more than any of her teammates. It's not about conditioning. That kind of abuse playing heavy minutes game after game in a long season takes a toll....

Guess my point sailed over everyone's head at Mach 2. Who do people think we hired? We hired an assistant coach at a successful program who had a hand in 8 National Championships, several conference championships, both regular season and tourney. Put that criteria behind any other name besides Holly and people would be going out of their minds with joy. Sadly, since it's one of our own, she doesn't get credit for what she has accomplished and gets ridiculed for everything from the way she dresses to being honest in her answers. If you want her gone, then fine, but give us some realistic names you could get to come here that would guarantee more success than we are having now.

The easiest, most convenient option available.

If you want her gone, then fine, but give us some realistic names you could get to come here that would guarantee more success than we are having now.

There are never guarantees when making a coaching change, you have to trust the AD to make the right choice. Thankfully the AD that hired Holly (and Butch) is no longer here...

Actually, some other things have changed. The competitive environment of WCBB has shifted. It is moving in the direction of the men's game where there are multiple strong rather than a select few. When CPS was at the helm, schools like South Carolina and MSU were after thoughts, not competing for final four spots.

IN the SEC, it was generally UT and Georgia and then LSU came into the mix (with other schools like Vandy or Auburn periodically having a strong team).

If you look at schools like Stanford, Maryland, Duke, certainly Texas, none of the locks for a final four year in and year out. There really is only one program that can claim that distinction right now.

Could the LVs, in some ideal world, get a better coach than Holly (including her recruiting acumen which is a big part of the equation). Of course, but when you start searching for viable upgrades, the list actually gets pretty narrow, particularly when you see how the stars fade on some coaches who have been heralded as a better option--Like Matt Mitchell.

However, could the LVs do worse than Holly? I think so and much worse. I know this statement will trigger a million snarky post of the variety of "gee, anyone, or any inanimate object can out coach Holly" but those posts will happen regardless...

Thank you. ^^THIS IS SO TRUE

If I only had a dollar for every time I thought (or replied) the very things on this and other forums... well stated.

That's the same point I made a couple of pages ago. I guess blue ink isn't widely understood either
