Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs So. Car. ; Mon Jan 27th ; Home game; 7 PM Eastern; ESPN2

This game was called fairly decent by the refs so no real complaints should come from either side.
Achilles Heal for this game were the missed layups and those missed shots around the rim.
This team is going to be good at the end of the year. They just need to fine tune.
Where you there???
The female ref made maybe 2-3 calls our way the whole game,,,she was decidedly biased

This will keep happening until Kim proves she has the nerve to bow up and defend her team!

Disappointed in the loss. When the season began, I was not expecting much from this team with so many new players, loss of talent and new coaches but this team proved everyone wrong in the pre-conference schedule then proceeded to go toe to toe with the conference elites. I was not expecting the team to have chances to win those games but they almost did. Point is.....this team has talent and coaching. What may be lacking is confidence and that will come with wins. This may not be our year but it does show we are tracking in the right direction.

How in the world a week after giving birth to a child and dealing with a pregnancy all season can you fix your mind to be critical towards a female coach for lacking the nerve to defend her team?
You got some issues bro.

I'm not led by emotions "bro"
I don't cater to "bless her heart" feelings

I am a coach
And if you assume the role of a coach,,you better be ready to do it

The reffing dictated the change in how the game was going,,,I was there, in full view, mid-court...The female ref was catching hell from everyone BUT the bench.

You send your players on the court for battle,,,you have to be ready to fight with them
sorry, not sorry

Nothing to do with emotions bro. I’m telling you that’s nonsense. CKC doesn’t have to prove to spectators she’s defending her team and demanding to the officials.
You attending a game doesn’t make you credible.
Everyone can see from the tip to the final buzzer CKC is coaching this team and representing this team at a high level in every aspect.

I agree once CKC decided to coach this game, all emotions and bless her heart was off.

But I think you're going to have to accept that performing ref theatre is no more in CKC's makeup than it was Kellie Harper's. CKC is a very modern coach who simply doesn't buy many of the old school cliches such as magical time outs and battering refs into submission. She has plenty of conversations w them, but if you're waiting for her to slide a chair across the floor I think you're in for a very long wait. One thing I think we know about her is what you see is what you get. Not into theatrics.

then she better learn,,,,theatrics are in the bag of tricks to all of the top coaches,,,Pat's stare, Mulkey's attire,,,Geno's wit,,Dawn's temper

They have learned that to take the focus off of your players, you have to put the focus on you

Notice those are older, more traditional coaches. Times have changed, those are anachronisms now. Even Dawn has calmed down alot, of course she doesn't have much to complain about. All coaches will have their moments of outrage but haranging refs as a strategy is passe, at least at high levels. Ya'll probably still do it down at the church gym on Saturday mornings.

Great post Rickster. I believe being optimistic for instant success at the start of the season was something only a handful of fans envisioned.
You put things in perspective.
It hasn’t been easy.
The reminder of the season won’t be easy.
As you stated though, we’re heading in the right direction.
GBO!

I'm not saying we're not heading in the right direction, bro

All I am saying is the last two staff's didn't grow along with the program,,,they expected the players to grow,,,but didn't look inward at their own growth
I will do all I can to not let this potentially great coach do the same thing

The “we don’t need post players” theory, I remind you, is a myth. Some people (I’m not saying you) took too narrowly Kim’s exuberant remark that she would take 5 guards if she could. In fact, 5 great guards would be great on a team that plays two platoons. But my point is that in those same interviews (at one of the Big Orange Caravan stops) she also said the biggest difference at this level is that we must have big athletic posts who can hold their own in this league. She knows. I hope we can bring some in from high school and the portal. But most of all for now, see continual improvement in the ones we have.

And, yeah, I agree: this was light years better than getting dusted by 20! It’s not a “moral victory.” It means we will have some positive things to build on looking at the film, as well as the corrections. It’s a mental war right now for our LVs as well as a physical one.
I was referring to overly exuberant posters who proclaimed that the LVs would press everyone into oblivion and we did not need a post because no team would ever get the ball past half court.

Back to the game, Boyd had. A heck of a game for a freshman in that situation.

Boyd is growing fast on the court
and her speed is next level

And that no opposing big would ever get themselves past half court against us.

LOL one of the disappointments of age is that everything moderates to the mushy middle.

Point taken. You right about accountability from the players to the coaches. We see this particular situation differently in terms of handling the officials. I believe she hurts the team more at this stage by arguing for calls that either way aren’t likely going to be made in the teams favor.
The traveling call on Spearman was the worse I saw last night but as the coach you can’t expect to win the argument on a judgement call like that. They called it on SC too.
Now Coach Staley and Coach Mulkey do work officials to their advantage.
I see Coach Caldwell as establishing her footprint in this area.

Starting Spearman and Latham proved to be a good decision,,,they compliment each other very well on the court

Id like to see the next starting five as:
Spearman, Latham, Whitehorn, Spencer and Boyd
Not real strong offensively and almost no 3 pt shooting there. Very strong otherwise. Also, starting just doesn't matter.

Hopefully with the next infusion of talent all these D for O tradeoffs won't be necessary.

The LVs have a history of struggling to make very athletic players into efficient offensive players.
True, but there is a new captain on the ship that is achieving results beyond expectations. I'm excited for her and positive for the future but it's likely not going to happen this year but, if one is patient, they can see the groundwork that is needed is going into place.

I am just over the moon impressed by her. She is a menace in all the best ways.

there were blatant and obvious calls missed all night,,,the stands were up in arms.
My verbiage became much more colorful as the game went on and the calls were progressively seemingly not called to move the game on

Will they make it? But if they don’t make it the first couple of years it’s fine in my opinion.
Only a complete collapse would keep the LVs out of the tourney. I think they finish with 7 or 8 losses tops. They'll get in. The fight now is for decent seeding in both tourneys.
