Game Thread Lady Vols vs South Carolina in the SEC Tournament

Andy Landers was the male version of Holly, so let's not go there. The Lady Vols owned his teams and that's why he dislikes them so much. He loves watching UT struggle.

The fact that people are really on here blaming Holly for the loss to SC is insane to me. Did you guys even watch the whole game? We had 11 turnovers to their 27, we had 30 more shot attempts then SC but we couldn't buy a basket. Now layups are one of the first things you learn playing basketball the fact that we missed so many layups is not the coaches fault, she can't take the shot for them. Of all the games we played since preseason we never came out and missed like 20 layups that's on the players. My main problem with this game is MR she is 6'6 and players go at her like she's an undersized post because they know she isn't going to do anything. SC gaurds were 1-19 last night they made 1 shot, the post however were 23-31. They went at MR all night long and she did nothing about it, she honestly didnt seem like she cared much she had 4 rebounds that should say it all folks. She takes no pride in her play and plays with no passion or toughness. Another problem was the officiating there was 22 fouls called on us and 13 called on them. I understand we need to be able to play through contact but if you call it on one end call it on the other.
Jamie played hard last night the only player with a double- double 15pts and 13rebs despite her injury she gave it all she had, played like the only senior out there.

They played hard. Not smart but hard. I would be a bit disappointed in Russell cause I think she could have played harder. South Carolina posts did whatever they wanted. South Carolina didn't even have a guard score until late in the 3rd quarter. That is insanity. I know Russell is a finesse player but someone has to let her know that there is nothing finesse about defense. Otherwise, the WNBA is gonna give her a real wake up call.

My thoughts exactly.

That defense was on Holly. How do you go small with three post in the game for SC? When Davis got in foul trouble it should have been Green replacing her, but we went three guards, a forward, and a center. Green has become by far the best post defender on the team. She stays in FRONT of her man and she MOVES and she’s gotten better picking up the pick n roll. It’s no doubt in my mind she would have helped in the paint last night, since Jaime was actually the only one having success defending it.

Kort should have saw some action last night also. Everyone was struggling to put the ball in the hoop and most everyone was missing defensive assignments, so her coming in to see if she could provide much needed offense wouldn’t have had any impact on the defensive end. The defense has to respect Kort when she’s on the floor along with MeMe, and even though she’s been struggling Jamie also, so they can’t send the double or triple team to her. But it’s like the coaches refuse to see that.

who recruited Russell and coached her for the last 5 years?

Did you post a similar dissatisfaction with the officiating in the Auburn game when we took 24 free throws to Auburn's 5 ??

The Lady Vols missed 63 shots tonight IMO because they had no legs tonight and were gassed because they were dog tired from last night's struggle with Auburn. They were dog tired because they only go 6 deep on the roster for significant playing time. They only go 6 deep because their coach doesn't develop players to a point where they can be trusted in important win or go home games.

On Friday, Indiana gave a heavily favored Maryland team a good battle after having played a 4OT game the day before.

If your assertion is correct, then I would have questions about the team’s strength and conditioning procedures.

I actually thought the Lady Vols generally out hustled South Carolina and I think some of the stats bear that out. Someone suggested that one contributing factor in missing so many bunnies was their playing too fast and out of control and that’s a reasonable conclusion IMO.

You know, the same things for us come up again and again and again.... lackluster effort as compared to the opponent (despite some gritty play from some last night), poor shot selection, "quick shooting" as Holly says, lack of good 3 pt defense, poor boxing out, missing layups..... etc etc....

No matter what the issue is, i say again what I always say, it always is the ultimate responsibility of the head coach. She (he) controls the whole program, what happens in practice, what needs to be worked on, how individual players can best be developed, etc... maybe if you are missing 30 layups in a game, a practice could be 2 hours straight of layup drills.... including when you are winded.... that is an exaggeration but that is my point... can't shoot free throws? put in the time to practice them....

I just have the same recurring questions..... why can't we box out? why do we have so much trouble with ball control? Why do we look so pedestrian in demeanor vs the other team most nights? Why do we settle for bad shots and shoot so quickly on our possessions? Sometimes rather than fight for rebounds, we look like we are at an Arthur Murray session.

Everything this team does, and its resulting performance is.... a direct byproduct of coaching! Anything they cannot do, but need to do.... and anything they do, but could do better, stand as achievement benchmarks, and result from the coaching they receive...there is a science and an art to coaching.... they need the science.... the x's and o's the fundamentals.... the defensive and offensive schemes.... etc... and they need the art... the vision... the mental part of the game.... the part Pat was tireless teaching them..... Anyway... I just do not believe a shortcoming of any sort is tied too closely to a player... if that is true... then they need to learn from their mistake, or practice more, or sit down!

OK that is enough!

The reason people are blaming holly, is because she is the head coach! If Russel isn't playing defense, sit her on the bench until she does. She could have inserted Dunbar in the game early, but didn't. Green is a lot better than a lot of people on here gives her credit for. Hayes runs down the court on offense at 200 mph, but runs back on defense at 20 mph. COACHING!

That our players too often take bad shots is just lies. The truth is our players, as a whole, are too afraid to shoot even open shots!

If basketball wasn't about shooting, rebounding, and not turning the ball over Tennessee would be the best team in the country.

Davis continues to get better because she puts in the time. She works on her shots with Lockwood outside of practice and she studies film. Hayes still plays out of control, but she has cut down some on her wild passes and TOs. She's beginning to show more composure. Davis probably will be our best player next year, and if Hayes works on her ball control and outside shot, she can make great strides, too.

You missed Westbrook ranked 1 or 2 in the nation.

My thoughts exactly.

I agree but where their 4 and 5 position chewed into LV, you must ask where was our four as where as Russell.
Ask who was playing either Jennings or Wilson.
The sad part about it was they was laughing in their faces. Laughing like they was a joke. SO SADDDDDD.

After reading the multitude of posts on this board by college basketball coaches, I now feel qualified to coach, at a minimum, a women's college basketball team.

If want to see the teams shortcomings exposed all you have to do is look at the NCAA ranking summary.

The team ranks 163rd in defense. IMO that is entirely on the coaching staff. Most players come out of HS and AAU ball completely focused on offense. Very few have been taught defensive fundamentals - and it's not a priority. They have no clue of how to play defense.

The team ranks 233rd in 3pt fgs made. Also entirely on the coaching staff. Are they taught when to take the shot? Is the team taught how to screen to get them open? Do they know how to move off the ball to get position? All coaching.

The team ranks 239th in turnovers. Why? When to pass and when not to, breaking a press, protecting the ball -all coaching.

Tennessee will continue to struggle until somebody decides that there is more to the game than pound the ball in and rebound.

They have the horses but the rider seems to have lost the stirrups.

I think it's more about taking the right shot. They shoot about as often as other top teams. If you look at season stats, the number of shot's taken (except outside shooting) is not Tennessee's problem.

Incidentally, UT took more shots than SC and NCAA scoring leader UConn.

When you recruit a three point shooter should be a must get player. I think that was the idea with Dunbar but she didn't work out. You have to make sure they have an all around game.
