Game Thread Lady Vols vs Stanford

Defense and offense looked better today. Still some issues with our outside shooting, especially 3s. I think we were like 1-11 at half. Stanford looked horrible, I hope the main reason was our tenacity on defense.

I think it was a combination of Tennessee playing great defense and Stanford is down this season.

Also, the thing I like about this win is it wasn't great offense but it was good offense. Everyone played within themselves. They weren't selfish, there was good passing and movement. That is the kind of stuff we need to see Holly. We even saw it with Harrison on the bench. Overall good team effort and good coaching effort. Two big wins for Holly this year. I hope we're seeing a transformation with Holly.

Make no mistake, to win a national title you need defense AND offense. The biggest difference between UT and Ct. over the last 10 years is that they've been much better OFFENSIVELY. That is why they are so good. Our defense was excellent today and the offense was better--not great, but we moved the ball, got some open shots. Harrison played smart and did not try to force things against double teams, Massengale made some shots in the second half, and Graves even made a couple of jumpers--can you believe it? Once you move the ball, the key is to get it to players in spots where they are confident shooting it. Jones is very shaky as a wing player--she takes the ball to the basket but is not quick enough, or a good enough shooter, to finish plays--and in fact she often makes poor decisions. Hope she is ok. The more we improve offensively, the better our chances come tourney time.

We moved the ball better today than most games. That was a big key to the win. When we don't move the ball the offense becomes stagnant. I had a feeling this game would be a big margin victory. The next game will probably be a nail biter because they will think they got it covered.

I expect all the reasons that the LVols won from many of our less than positive posters was that Stanford wasn't very good and that Graves double double was a fluke and and and and. Of course that head coach from Stanford - she isn't very good either.
CROW?

They lost to UTC

Stanford is not that good.

We got the win, but they really had no one o challenge us athletically.

Defense and rebounds win championship.

OSU will be a better gauge not a ton of athletes but they play as a team and TexasAm is looking good play em in early January, that game would be my barometer cos they have players who can challenge our guards.

Nice win, ladies.

Talk about consistency lol

Teams can't get away with phoning it in vs. "inferior" competition. Coaching and talent spread across schools makes these kinds of upsets more possible if the favored team doesn't take the game seriously.

If anything, it just shows that even a seasoned and well-respected coach like Tara can have a brain freeze as well, and Holly losing to UTC isn't the end of the world.

Tennessee has games against TAMU, SC, UK and Notre Dame in the upcoming months. Those games will all be much more telling than a November loss to UTC.

Orrange and Thompson put Tennessee's starting backcourt to shame. They are one of the best starting backcourts in the nation.

Stanford was good enough to beat UConn, so it's not like they were fielding a team full of players that wouldn't make the Tennessee rotation.

Says who? The best backcourt in the nation is Texas AM, and Jewell Lloyd by herself.

They caught an Uconn team early in the season, a team without leadership, searching for an identity everyone who follows wcbb knows Uconn would mop the floor with Stanford, it was a nice win for them but they are not good.

I'm glad we won, a win against Stanford looks good but they will struggle this year.

But our front court will put Stanford to shame.

Its not the end of the world but its certainly unacceptable. We've moved past UTC lost. Please don't remind us.

Now the Pac 12 get to beat up on Stanford and their young posts

Stanford is not good, if you cant say that then er thing you say is...

Notre Dame is average to me too but they have a special player.

Those team you mentioned above I agree will tell us more about our team.

Stanford, ND are very young and inexperienced, like we were a few years back.

I thought it was a great win for the Lady Vols and Holly. This is a talented team. I was happy to see support from the football team and the men's basketball team at the game.

This is something to build on, let us hope. We were terrible against texas and nooga, good defensively but terrible offensive against rutgers, and yesterday the Vols were excellent defensively and improved offensively--not good offensively (we shot 38 percent for the game and still had 17 turnovers)--but improved. Summitt and Warlick have had this old school notion that if you bring it defense, you will always win. That is simply not true anymore. You need to bring it on both ends to be a truly great team--that is why ct. has been great, a huge offensive edge over us in recent years. The more we narrow their offensive edge, the closer we come to playing with and beating that team. They've got more offensive talent than we do, which is all the more reason why we have to be better fundamentally when we have the ball. That is why ND is good--and has been able to play with and beat ct. more than a few times--they are a very fundamental team. The only thing that worries me offensively is that we tend the move the ball around the perimeter a lot, when we need to find a way to pick and get the ball inside a bit more--and i'm not just talking about inside to Harrison. If we bring Harrison out from the basket some, she will bring defenders with her and create more space inside. We did that a bit in the second half.

On offense you are going to get what the percentages dictate. If Reynolds shoots 10 shots she is going to make three and get you six to seven points. If Burdick shoots 10 shots she is going to get you about 8 points because she is a 42 percent career shooter. So if these two players put up 20 shots expect about 15 points. After you have about 100 shots on your resume the percentages do no lie that is who you are.
If you let Massengale shoot 10 three pointers she is going to make about four so that is 12 points. So I'd rather see Massengale put up 10 three's than Burdick and Reynolds shoot 20 shots for 15 points. Percentages say you would rather find a way for Massengale to put up 20 threes in a game than let the other two I mentioned shoot 20 shots from anywhere. The point total is plus nine to 24 points with Massengale shooting instead of those two players.
Our lifetime percentages say a lot of these players are never going to be great shooters so it looks like defense must be the key to winning. We don't have a player on the team that has shot 45 percent lifetime on at least 100 tries except inside players Harrison, Graves, and Moore. So you can't expect shots to go in at much more than 40 from the outside. So that is why teams try to beat us by clogging the paint and letting us shoot them. Massengale being a career 37 percent three point shooter is a main threat for points from the perimeter. She is at 44 percent from the three this season.

Burdick was a very reliable shooter her first two seasons. Carter was one of the most accurate shooters on the team last season, now she can't throw the ball into the ocean.

The problem isn't that we don't have good offensive players, the problem is too many of them fail to develop or even regress....

Yes this is something to build on.... and i am happy that we put in a good effort..... and yes I think Tara is a good coach..... it takes guts to totally dismantle and reconfigure her offense based on the fact that her different personnel called for it..... and I am with the posters who say that ND is a very good team..... well schooled in the fundamentals..... and who knows how good Turner is..... we will see once she is 100%..... they really had UConn's number for a while.... Muffet is a good coach..... in practice and as a game coach..... we get the Beavers on the 28th..... hope for more of the game we showed with the Cardinal
