Question about Annies man defense. Annie is quick, so why is it so hard for her to keep the player in front of her in the man defense. I know with Middleton the response is she was not quick enough.

Concerning Russell, if they collapse on her on offense, instruct the other players to take the best shot they can and demand that Russell make an effort to rebound. If she shows no interest in banging down low, put in London or KK.

I'll give you a hint. All of the players getting blown by, look at their feet. If your feet are wrong you're basically screwed. I mean that's assuming she knew the scout and wasn't playing too close on the player to begin with. Even still defense starts at your feet.

I would add that body positioning and angles are important. The goal is to keep the opponent square you you; if you are over committed to one side-- it is easy for the opponent to take the angle on the other. Many of the LVs do this as well, they over commit to the side that leaves the baseline drive open. I actually wonder if that is a coaching, force the opponents to the baseline where others can collapse on them. If that is the strategy, it is not working well.

How your body is positioned depends on what the staff has taught you about help defense and also the scout of the player you are guarding. Are you "sitting" in your stance or are you hunched over? If you are hunched over then you are likely flat footed and are gonna get beat anyway. Also, some coaches teach their kids to defend with 1 hand up and 1 hand out to the players dominant hand on the perimeter and others teach both hands out.

Based on what I have seen Tennessee teaches both hands out and I can't seem to figure out what their helpside philosophy is. Seems like 90% of the time if you get beat it's just on you. The other 10% Meme sneaks in on the baseline or Russell is there.

Feed the ball to Russell all night long and double team Carter when A&M is on offense and make their other players beat you.

Players get beat occasionally in the man the big concern I have seen is no help defense when this happens. Russell is usually looking somewhere else is not really guarding the basket. We never trap the ball or try to make the best player on the team give it up with a double team.
Defense works both ways if they are going to take your player out of the game with double and triple teams then you have the power to do the same to their best scorer. Other players than can make a defense pay for doing this is the team that will win the game.

On paper we should beat A&M, however, can Holly match wits with A&M’s coach? Can Holly motivate this team to a win? Will we change our offensive scheme when A&M sags in on Russell? If we play as we have lately, the resounding answer is no to all three questions. We have to get our aggression back and Russell and company has to control the boards or we are screwed.

Hillman is capable of getting into foul trouble, however, for that to happen we have to drive the ball and Russell has to be agressive. We also need an answer for Carter or she will make us look like a middle school basketball team. I pray that Holly has worked on our paint defense. If not Carter and others will have a field day. By the way A&M only plays 7 players, so this excuse of we lost because we are tired and have a short bench is what it is, an excuse.

Go Lady Vols Protect Your House!!!!

The answer to all your questions above is a resounding no! Be prepared for loss no. 5. Is this pessimistic? Yes, but realistic also.

Feeding Russell all night long with a 2/3 sagging zone is a disaster in the making and 25+ turnovers just like in the Notre Dame game.

When we last played A&M, what defense did they play?

If they do decide to play a sagging 2/3, those jumpers to the right and left of the foul line should be open. Tell Russell to not except the ball much and to position and get some offensive rebounds. If she is lazy, put in KK and/or London.

After watching Holly the last game she said they can't win by missing free throws. They went 11/16 missed 5 shots they lost the game by 11. If they had block out they would have won the game. Tennessee got 32 rebounds to LSU 44 this is where they lost the game. The only way they will beat Texas A&M is if the block out. I was so hurt about the lost to LSU. Still love the Lady Vols.

The last few games, the Lady Vols are not blocking out, causing turnovers trying to throw the ball into a well covered Russell, shooting last minute bricks, not taking shots when they are open and playing with limited physicality. As I have said, Hillman is known for getting into foul trouble so drive the ball. It would also help if we threw the ball high to Russell and she tried jumping instead of standing on the floor as if her feet are nailed down. It would also help if she does not bring the ball down low because she has a habit of losing the ball or getting the ball stolen.

A&M has a short bench, but they play very physical and they hustle,we have to match their physicality and hustle. For all that is holy, please guard the paint and take away the Carter welcome mat.

Lady Vols Protect TBS it is your home!!!!

3-4 of those TOS were crazy passes by freshmen. End of first quarter, Vols by two.
