Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas ; Thurs Jan 23rd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SECNetwork

Can't totally agree with this. This year we have 4 losses by a total of 8 points. Last year we lost 11 regular season games by an average of 11 points, including 5 losses by 14+ points. Still a lot of games to play but this year all of our losses have come to teams in the top 20 of the NET - last year we lost to 5 teams outside of the NET top 30. We're 11th at Massey (23rd last year), 9th at HHS (23rd last year), and 13th in the NET (30th last year).
I meant the same results, not the same playing style. Same in coming agonizingly close to big wins and not being able to close out. Also same position in SEC standings, battling for that first day bye and same need for a breakthru win to host in the NCAA. Also I don't count anything that happened the previous two preseasons, last yr's bc Rickea was out and this yr's bc the schedule was, well, not countable.

I've said a thousand times I think this team will be the one to finally break thru the 1.1 curse. I've also said with the recruiting class she has in her pocket, whatever happens this year is gravy. Trajectory is def up, and that's completely opposite last yr.

I know it’s what some posters do on here but my goodness it’s just outrageous to act like you have any idea of what the team will look like next fall.
Flat out comical.
Could have left this ☝️ out entirely.

Saying we’ll only have this player(s) at this height or size is ridiculous when next years roster for 2025-2026 won’t be finalized until this summer.
Presumptuous maybe better.

Otherwise, I haz agreez.

Know your facts! You obviously have never played or coached basketball. In that case you try but she didn't. Film doesn't lie!!! Period!!!
I'd wager Pat would've told Spearman to try and NOT foul. With the bigs TX has, she was needed ON the floor. I'd even say she would've been pissed if Spearman had fouled out knowing this piece of common sense knowledge. Something you sorely are in need of.

.... This team needs a Lady Vol from the Pat Summitt coaching tree to ....
Don't start this sh-t. Thank you.

Your conclusion is reasonable:
From the Vandy Game to this game, this team improved leaps and bounds especially with the offensive attack and the full court defense. Now they need to go to work on rebounding and interior defense. Rome was not built in a day and neither is a basketball team...

Despite four losses of a combined 8 points between all games, Tennessee has shown to be able to play with the top teams.

With this being said, I go back to what Kim said after the back to back losses to OK and LSU, where we were 3 points away from being a top 10 team and not being able to get those games back. That is very true and applies to the last back to back losses.

Additionally, we have four games now that no one questions our fight, but one does have to question the same mistakes being made. Missed free throws, missed layups, turning the ball over, giving up offensive rebounds, defensive breakdowns once the press is broken, etc. We do not seem to have made any adjustments to our game plan, and until a change is made, how do we not know by tweaking one area something may change for the better? I’m not saying changing the complete plan, but tweak and adjust somewhere to see what effect it has, even if it’s for a half or quarter.

I’m afraid that these close losses may be a hovering dagger over the players confidence, especially with the remaining next two games if they are losses, and this affecting games that we should win handily and potentially loss, or be closer than it should have been. Just my thoughts that I was thinking of this morning. I get it’s still season one of the new style, change, etc., but all these games we’ve lost were winnable and you have to think at some point we’re either going to figure it out and get some wins even close, or it could all crumble and be a dagger to our progress. I just don’t want our players to dwell on what has happened and continue to focus and be motivated for what is left. The SEC is a tough conference, and I’d say even more stiff than it’s ever been.

I appreciate the LV's efforts in a hard fought game that resulted in another tough loss, the kind of loss that sticks in the craw for a while. Now, like coroners, we pick over the carcass with woulda, shoulda, coulda and what if. I did not watch the game but was able to check the score, halftime stats and touch base with the Forum some. Here are my thoughts. I'm not too bright. I know there are those on this Forum who will be eager to point that out. Just be gentle is all I can ask. Stream-of- consciousness, here goes: Ruby Whitehorn is becoming my favorite player on this team. Spearman, 14pts in 18 mins and she was ailing, tough lady. I know, a couple of posters seem to hold her personally responsible for the loss. Something about a foul or lack of near the end of the game. Spear and Spencer collectively average 24 pts and 6.5 rebs per game. Last night they had 6 pts and 2 rebs. We needed more than that out of them. I realize, given their stature and the amount of beef the Longhorns had inside, getting a rebound would have been a tough chore. We were outrebounded by 16 in the first. We improved to + 1, 14 to 13 in the second half. That and continued good shooting allowed us to stay in the game until the end. Shooting was terrific, 50% overall, 52.9% 3pts and 48.6% 2pts. Good enough to win most games. If a women's basketball team committed exactly 4 fouls per quarter and every foul was a common foul, they would end the game having 16 fouls called against them with their opponent going to the free throw line 0 times. Last night the LVs were13/19 on free throws, Texas 15/20. Not a huge discrepancy yet TN was whistled for 22 fouls to TX 10. I can only surmise a large portion of the fouls TX committed were on shooters while many of the fouls committed by TN were non- shooting reach ins, going for steals etc. Finally, Cooper. One minute she wows me. The next she leaves me scratching my head and cursing out loud. She drives into a crowd with that high bouncing ball, turns it over then lopes back down the court, head hanging down, completely out of the game. She tries too much wow when the routine play would do. She reminds me of Horston. Then, I look at her stat line and am always surprised how much she has contributed- points, steals, rebounds. How great she can be when she improves her handle, develops her on court awareness. When she does she'll improve her play and the performance of her teammates as well.

Prior to last night, Spear was averaging 17 points per game in SEC games compared to 13 in non-conference games.
So far Jewel has never been a consistent player for us. Capable but very streaky. Could be said of most of our current players.

Good thing I didn't say that. As you well know, I gave the factual heights of the players remaining on the roster next year and said immediately I'm sure that would be addressed via the portal. Read for comprehension, not retaliation.

Here's my perspective as a Texas fan:

- very entertaining game to watch as a fan
- I've never seen a team hit on so many floaters in the lane
- so strange to see so many substitutions from the LVs; i'm sure you guys are used to it, but i could not keep up with who was on the floor
- i've read all the comments here about Texas' size; have to admit I've never seen such a "slender" LV's squad; great athleticism, just not much girth in the paint
- all i kept thinking watching the game was Joan Bonvincini's comment about the Lady Vols in the late 80's -- "corn-fed chicks"
- such a different LVs squad (physique-wise) than I grew up watching; definitely no Daedra Charles, Dana Johnson, or Pashen Thompson clones on the roster

I'd even take a Shrya Ely. She wasn't super tall, but she used her butt to make space better than any player we ever had. Her ass was a weapon! 😅

Some of us are tired of waiting for next year.

For sure but we have to give the reset a little grace. I could be wrong but it feels like the breakthru will come later this year.
And we are tied for 10th in the conference :(
Means nothing. Some teams have had easier league schedules than us so far. I think the top of the league is pretty well set as the Big Three but everything else is still up for grabs. Esp with OK having a couple of unexpected losses.

I would guess the obvious way to explain the close losses is that the defense is still not good enough. We let them shoot 50 percent. We let LSU shoot 50 percent. Texas outrebounded and won the turnover battle against South Carolina but only shot 23 percent. If they shoot 45 percent last night we win the game. Letting teams get to that 50 percent mark is the killer and when the defense get good enough to prevent that happening we'll start winning some of these top ten matchups. Vandy only shot 37 percent and we shot 38. They won by making 7 more free throws.

The problem is by not being able to close out any of these close games we will probably not be a high enough seed to be a real threat. It’s much less common for teams outside the top 2-3 seed lines to make the Final Four in the women’s tournament than the men’s.

Right now we are probably looking at a 5 seed which means you’re playing a true road game against a 4 in the r32 if they aren’t upset in the r64. And then if you win that it’s a 1 seed in the s16 unless somehow that team didn’t get through the first weekend. That’s an extremely difficult path to a FF

All she needs is a strong big to rebound and defend . Just so close it's almost irritating. Just being tall doesn't work that well. Have to be able to stand your ground and box out. The big Jones girl is about what we need big strong and tall. Hollingshead is big enough just don't play strong enough she plays like a small forward but doesn't handle the ball well enough. GBO 💥

Some have argued, esp pre season, that the "system" would overcome the need for size. Positionless basketball, wherein a big would only slow us down. Or that 6'2" bigs are enough.

Turns out that's not true. Still need bigs, but they need to be the right bigs, ones that at are least somewhat mobile. Those aren't easy to find but I'd bet my bottom dollar they'll be plumbing the portal for some of thiose this spring. Because not only are the recruits not bigs, graduation will take our tallest player, Jill, and leave only Zee at 6'4", Latham at 6'2" and no other player taller than 6'0" on the current roster. Probably our smallest team in years and years.

I mean that was the point that got shouted down in the pre-season. I have also read some other posts, "the LVs need better interior defense" but this team is actually designed to be weak in the interior. The whole ideal of the constant pressing and the athletic wings is to in theory keep teams from getting the ball into post (or more accurately, we win the war by getting more turnovers than they get shots at the rim but they will win a few battles over the course of the game). And anyway, we score 3s for their 2s.

But you don't really can't add a traditional big to this speed oriented system without changing things a lot. Unless you find a unicorn player. Young Brittany Griner would have been a monster in this system

While Spearman is 6'4 she is light as a feather and can't match up one-in-one against wide bodies (Leading to fouls etc).

The funny thing this system is almost working. Texas blasted Maryland and the LVs took them right to the end on their home court.

As fans, we all need to appreciate what this team does well. Exciting fast paced offense that is getting more diversified. Ruby is becoming quite the mid range scorer. That is where Coop is at here best. They do generate a lot of turnovers and disruption but they are going to give up some things to. You don't get one without the other.
