Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas ; Thurs Jan 23rd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SECNetwork

I mean that was the point that got shouted down in the pre-season. I have also read some other posts, "the LVs need better interior defense" but this team is actually designed to be weak in the interior. The whole ideal of the constant pressing and the athletic wings is to in theory keep teams from getting the ball into post (or more accurately, we win the war by getting more turnovers than they get shots at the rim but they will win a few battles over the course of the game). And anyway, we score 3s for their 2s.

But you don't really can't add a traditional big to this speed oriented system without changing things a lot. Unless you find a unicorn player. Young Brittany Griner would have been a monster in this system

While Spearman is 6'4 she is light as a feather and can't match up one-in-one against wide bodies (Leading to fouls etc).

The funny thing this system is almost working. Texas blasted Maryland and the LVs too them right to the end on their home court.

As fans, we all need to appreciate what this team does well. Exciting fast paced offense that is getting more diversified. Ruby is becoming quite the mid range scorer. That is where Coop is at here best. They do generate a lot of turnovers and disruption but they are going to give up some things to. You don't get one without the other.
Maryland was missing two of their top players so that's kinda skewed

We may be hurting after two loses in a row but we proved that Tennessee has the stuff to play against top 10 teams. Booker, Moore, Jones, Harmons, and Lee were no joke. A few times we got caught flat footed on rebounds, or we mistimed our jumps on rebounds. People this is a work in progress and the finishing touches are not in. This team will rebound and go on a run. Go Lady Vols!!

+/- stats

For the LVs, +- stats don't tell us very much. They track how many points a team gained or less against the opponent when a player is on the floor. So, in Jewel's case, during her minutes on the floor, the team lost 17 pts relative to TX.

The catch is that Jewell was not on the floor by herself. In the bigger scheme, plus-minus actually measures how different line-ups fare against the opponent but that info is lost when it is reduced down to individual level numbers.

With this teams subbing patterns, Jewell might have been on the floor with 8 different combinations. Maybe some of the combos had a favorable plus minus.

The more informative stat would be a plus minus for the different combos that the LVs play. I am sure the team's advanced analytics have that info but it is not going to appear on a box score.

Well, it's not about you, it's about the team. My daughter played for Coach Summit, and with that effort, she not only would've sit her down, but probably not played again til she proved to everyone that was the goal. TEAM!
And when Coach Summitt instructed a player to not pick up a fifth foul, it’s the same outcome. What’s best for the team is not always what a fan watching from home thinks it is.

People make a lot of judgments about effort in certain moments in games when they don’t know the backstory of how you got there. If you want to be angry about it, that’s fine. The coaching staff evaluated it differently, from what I understand.

I loved the Growth I saw on the offensive end of the Court last night. Yes, we lost, however, with growth like we showed from Vandy to this Texas game, and how we made a conscious decision to attack the paint was really nice to see. The players recognized what the defense was giving them yet they were not settling by being more aggressive to the paint and forcing Texas defense into the paint to defend which led to wide open threes and an impressive 3 point shooting percentage on the evening. Also, the defense came out with a lot more energy and got that game started right with the full-court pressure. These close losses suck, but if we continue to trend this way offensively and defensively, improve and focus on the interior defense and boxing out on every shot, there is not a team in the country that is going to want to see us come tournament time.

Wasn't that toward the end of the third or near the start of the 4th? Regardless, still plenty of time left to play. And, had she hit that late 3, you'd be singing her praises.

On edit. It was like under 2 mins. left in the 4th. But, like I said... regardless.

You dumb.

On edit. You STILL dumb
Calling people names is really childish. Sorry, I was only giving my opinion. I forgive you and go Lady Vols!

We had that last year and how did that work out for us?
Good question.

Losing streaks create message board madness. Last season, it was "we must get away from the PS coaching tree and interject some new blood and new ideas into the program!!"

Now that such a change has occurred, "we need to hire an ex-LV as coach who will get us back to the Pat Summitt fundamentals!!!"

I think those who are ready to abandon ship just need to take a deep breath and recite "trust the process". Rome was not built over night. The easy pre-conference schedule (plus the good win against Iowa) set expectations artificially high and now reality is biting back just a bit.
