Game Thread Lady Vols vs Troy

I like many of you watched the whole game and did not try to post while it was going on. I feel sorry for Nunn. She is still not well and playing on one leg is hard to do regardless of who you are playing. I watched her and not one time did I see her jump enough to cause her feet to come off the floor. Just not going to help much inside if you cannot get off the floor. She certainly tries and I give her credit for that. Dunbar is not well either and again that was as obvious as with Nunn. Both are competitors but we will not be able to count on them for much offense or defense.

If we can just get the healthy ones in sync and fluid, we'll be fine.

What is ailing (as they say in the south) Nunn and Dunbar?

If Middleton and Jackson come away with this game with a bit more offensive confidence, and they should, then it was a productive night. Russell has got to learn to stop futzing around with the ball--don't just stand and hold it for seconds.

Just got home from the game, It was an joy to watch such a fast paced game, when Jaime Nared and Jordan Reynolds got two flows on them it changed the game for Tennessee. With no Diamond DeShields, Meme Jackson was the only player with any speed in the game for Tennessee. If Holly Warlick had put Jaime Nared and Jordan Reynolds back in the 2nd quarter the lead would not haven gotten away from us like it did. The ref were calling some touch fouls.

I have to say that was the most enjoyable game of the season just in terms of fun basketball. I like the Troy style and the way in which the LVs matched the speed and made shots. Troy was a good pressing team and hopefully the LVs can take away some useful experience from that aspect of the game. At one point, it looked like Alexa was going for 40 but 29 ain't bad. The team did a great job in stepping up while Diamond was out of commission.

The team looks loose and they are having fun. Nice turnaround from the low point of less than 2 weeks ago. Credit to Holly and company for keeping it all together in the face adversity. She sure seems to have figured out some of the problems!

I didn't see the game. Were a lot of those offensive boards off long rebounds or underneath the basket?

Troy really went after the basketball and caught us flat footed several times. They also ripped a few away from our player and we fumbled a few to them we caught but couldn't hold. Nared was our best rebounder she matche their physical style on the boards and think she has 14 for the game.

I hope we never see that officiating crew again......fathom fouls on both sides......As one fan suggested that they "go back to footlocker"😊

Since Nunn and Dunbar are going to play limited time due to injuries
it should be their responsibility to stop the drives that are being uncontested
to the basket due to our lack of bench strength during the time they do play.

I saw Nared a couple of times elevate really high for rebounds. She did great.

Maybe but if you have a injury that effects your mobility to get back at a rapid pace then that is the problem within its self. Last night 90% of those drives were well out in front of most all of our defense.

Our "help" defense is terrible--just another reason why we struggle. Every player is supposed to be aware of the court and the ball, so that if one player is beaten, someone else close to the ball can move and pick up the potential scorer. And then another player moves over to guard the opposition player left free by the first helper. But our players are clueless half the time: an opposing guard will not just beat one of our guards, but then drive past another Vol who is not paying attention and score.

Russell, stupidly, is ALWAYS following her mark out to the foul line or top of key--pulling herself away from the paint and therefore unable to help defend the basket when one of our perimeter players or wingers gets beat. Why does she do this, since the opposition center is not going to shoot a 18-20-foot shot? All Russell is doing is helping the other team. You'd think our brilliant coaches would end this habit--but have they? Need you ask? No, they haven't.

Offensive rebounding has to get better we can't give teams three four shots per possession . We have to play under control most of our 24 turnovers were players trying to do to much with passes or not finding the open player when double and triple teamed.

Agree. We were not ready for the fierce defense and full court press that Troy employed the majority of the game. Many of the offensive rebounds were due to the long distance the Troy team was fogging it up toward the goal. They were 10 time more aggressive and just wore themselves out by the end of the 3rd quarter. I will take the win over a pretty good team any day. I will wait and see how this team does against Kentucky before making a judgement going forward.:thud:

This was a very unique team, Troy. Employing the UNLV offense philosophy with the 40 minutes of Hell Defensive press. Subbing in constantly to keep fresh bodies.

If you think about, have we played such a system at all with his group...Once the girls got over the shock, they actually enjoyed this type of run-n-gun play.

You should be ashamed of yourself in calling this young lady stupid. She is doing what Holly and the other coaches are telling her to do, period.

Good observations on Jackson and Middleton....now they need to build on that confidence and develop some court swag .

Meme is looking much better on the offensive end than last season. I think it may be next before she is a consistent scoring threat but she can definitely contribute this season. Her 3-point shot is improving and she can get to the rim.

My only concern about her right now is that she gets beat a lot in one-on-one defending situations (mostly giving up the baseline). She is a really good athlete who should be able to keep most guards in front of her but she often seems to not play the angles right (over committing to one side etc.). She is good in the open floor, closing off passing lanes and double teaming but her one-on-one defending needs to tighten up, if she is really going to be the team's go-to defensive stopper.

They actually reminded me of the old Nolan Richardson Hogs and the 40 minutes of hell!! I hated when I was coaching and playing to have to play that type of team.

I was at the game last night and zero in on Meme on defence she has made great strides, it was a great game to watch.

Meme is looking more comfortable and she is shooting 40 percent from three . We finally kicked the ball out in the zone for an open shot. I was soo happy to see that and then posting up Jordan as she usually has small guards on her. I can see the improvements I just want them to play like this against Kentucky and ms state etc

Troy's style is fun to watch. This game should serve our LVs well, especially with DD sitting out. Middleton, Reynolds and Jackson need to continue to be aggressive on the offensive side of the ball.

Nared is becoming a baller. Her improvement is evident. Once she learns to play under more control, watch out. Russell looking better and better on offense. She still needs work on D. (The whole team does.)

Stanford win was encouraging. Troy game exciting. Bring on SEC play.

Happy Holidays!
