In some ways this game was more of the same but there were some bright spots.
Cooper, not just hitting some shots but playing a much better overall game at PG. She seems to be reading the game better.
Though she had an off shooting night, DeShields showed some real defensive prowess, her one "foul" was a completely clean block.
The press worked well in stretches. I agree with Carolyn Peck's observation that the LVs need DeShields and Carter on the court for the press to be effective.
Carter, say what you will, but effort is NOT an issue with this player.
It seemed that the game plan involved more plays were the LVs slash and drive and play a more up tempo game. Even though they were sloppy in stretches, I think that is the long term formula for the team to make a good run down the stretch.
Some points of concern:
Graves and Russell combined for 11 rebounds and 14 points. That is just not very good production. Against Vandy, Graves should have had that stat line by herself. At times, it seems like both wanted someone else to do "it." Again Peck was right in observation that Mercedes should not have been passing the ball back out to the perimeter when she had a mismatch on the inside. Take the shot!
Nared is working hard but the team will need more offensive spark from her as well if they are going to compete.
The Lvs still look like a team with lots of good individual pieces that are not quite all fitting together. If we were in November, this overall level of discombobulation would not be much of concern; now that the LVs are into the heart of the SEC season, they are running out of time to gel. Mixing metaphors yet again, the corner needs to be turned very, very soon (maybe like next week); a few more losses and their tournament seeding will become a major problem.
