Game Thread Lady Vols vs Vanderbilt

It was Vanderbilt, who hasn't won an SEC game all season. This was as guaranteed a win as it gets. I hope you're not suggesting that this game means anything...

Vandy is a bad, bad team. Great that Tennessee didn't screw this up, but they are right there with Troy and UNCW in terms of cupcakeability.
Vandy is a bad team but not quite to the extent you say. They did beat Duke. They lost To Louisville by 12, 5 to A&M at A&M, 2 to GA in Athens, 5 to Auburn, 6 to Mizzou and 3 to Ark in Ark. Yes they lose but they usually don't get blown out so I don't think they are as bad as you say.

Vandy is a cupcake and they were playing at home which usually makes for a good ending like tonite .Gotta give some credit to bench ....course they play well against slow cupcakes ......Middleton had a good game against guards who were as slow as she is but at least she hit some shots .

We shall see what they do playing Florida on the road.Lady Vols have been terrible on the road and Florida is better than a cupcake ....but not much better.

Word of advice to Holly apologists: ride that Notre Dame game as long as you can. THAT was an impressive win. This was not....

First, I'm not an "apologist". People can't have it both ways. The staff should get as much credit for this win as the did for the loss to Auburn. That's all I'm saying. I disagree on this not being an impressive win. Who else has beaten them by almost 30 points? I give the players credit for the win against Vandy because they played hard. I gave the players credit for the loss at Auburn because they didn't play hard after the first quarter. So which is it? Players or coaching? Yes, a little of both but if the players play with passion, they have proven they can beat anyone. Stanford, ND and even the loss to MS State. When they don't play with passion, you get Ole Miss & Auburn type games. So, again, which is it? Coaching or players? The coaching may not be the best around but I think we can easily see which part is more important.

You are right on when you say the LVs can beat a lot of top 10 teams, excluding the top 4, if they play with passion. Unfortunately, Holly lacks the coaching ability to demand that they play with passion.

Thanks for dismissing this win as nothing. Good job.:hi:

Forgive me for not putting a win against the last place team in the SEC in the same category as beating Stanford or Notre Dame.

Let me go back in time and gush about how excellent they were in beating UNCW while I'm at it.

It's becoming apparent that the win vs. Duke was even more of a fluke as they've stunk it up since. They really are as bad as I previously described. The fact that they stayed close in a lot of the SEC games just shows how bad the SEC is. Think they will keep it that close when they play Miss State and SC? They will get shredded, because they are a weak, weak team with zero size.

Sorry, I have a hard time getting pumped up over beating a team that hasn't won a game in over a month.

Nope, Florida is still a cupcake. Only 1 win in the SEC so far. If the Greek girl who bailed on the team was still there, then I'd be inclined to pick Florida to win, but she's not...and Tennessee should win by at least 15.

Some interesting quotes from Stephanie White:

(On attacking Tennessee in Vanderbilt's game plan)
"I wish that when we were playing Tennessee, we could figure out how to attack them. They might not have a deep bench, but they've got good players at every position. There is not a lot of liability on the floor. Tennessee's liability is their own mentality. When you look talent-for-talent across the country, Tennessee lines up with everybody. There's no doubt about it. So, for us, we like for them to get into an up-tempo game. We try to get them into foul trouble. We'd like to get deep into their bench, but that's easier said than done. They had great balance today. Alexa Middleton, who struggled in conference play, really came in, and had a great game. She really managed the game, not with just her production. She managed the flow of the game really well for them."

(On if Tennessee needs to be mentally tougher)
"No, I just think that sometimes they hold themselves back. I think that there's always this thing when you have a really good, talented team. Sometimes you think that you can flip the switch on and off. As coaches, we fight this battle a lot when you have great teams and great players. I think that when they play hard all the time, when they share the ball, especially like they played in the first half tonight, and in the fourth quarter, you can line them up against Connecticut. They could beat one of the best teams in the country. I think sometimes you see the inconsistency. It's not mental toughness necessarily, but just mentality to dominate. I think that's what you see in a lot of special players, and a lot of special players that you guys have seen around here for a long time."

That's why I've been saying for the longest, you let Coach Geno coach this team they are EASILY undefeated right now! We have to much talent to be so inconsistent.

Thrilled that Kd got to play and score. Thrilled that Amidd showed some of her skills. Thrilled that MR got up and down the floor better. Thrilled that no one was hurt. Puzzled over why Stephanie allows these players she inherited to continue to flop--it reflects poorly on the team (and poorly on the refs). Those 3-5 player scrums on the floor after the ball were ridiculous. Qui made some good moves trying to box out--loved that. Saw some air under the feet of some of our "non-jumping" players tonight. Jaime had a solid game. DD played better. Not many missed bunnies. Good passes, generally. Vandy isn't a professional women's BB team, but the LVs looked more competent than they have generally. All in all--yay!

did you notice Dunbar's strong hands on that rebound? lol Wish Russell had Dunbar's grip.

I'm guessing that Russell's particularly long arms may always hinder her ability to strengthen her grip.

Mercedes has been handling/gripping/catching the ball in the paint much better this year. So, I think she has improved on that component of her game. She could be more solid, no doubt, but she is far more reliable than she has been.

I agree that she has improved. But as far as her grip, she'll never have the hand strength that, say, Anosike had or most others. Her body type keeps her from being able to jump well, too, unfortunately.

If Mercedes were physically capable of gaining great upper arm/hand strength and a measurable vertical leap, all our guards would ever have to do to succeed is throw it inside really high and have her go up to get it above the arms of everyone else since she's taller than most players trying to guard her.

But that will never happen with her, and it's not really her fault.

I suggest using the report button.

Ready for the BWH contest?

Good idea, SV!

Was there a definite date for the BWH contest? I'm afraid I won't be back until the Texas A&M game, sadly. The weekday games are a hard one for me since I'm four hours away.

Well, apparently it works:).

We had said the LSU game. I can't make the A&M game:sad:. Maybe promote it and kick off next year with it, or have it at the SECT. Wonder what CoachJ thinks?

I just like to have fun. It would be great if gule came up to judge (and he could return MY WHITE HAT). Wonder what his plans are for next season? Depends on if wifey is in a good mood with him. We could send her a pretty please:).

gule, what do you say Oh VN Oracle?
