Game Thread: Lady Vols vs. Wright State 2:00 pm SECN+

A good win by the LVS, especially with Rickea's return and confidence building games for Sara and Franklin. A recurrent concern about this team is how many 3s that they allow in the first quarter, which has already cost us some wins. In most of our games so far, our defense gives the 3 - point shooters way too much space but eventually we correct this as the game goes on. The fact that his keeps happening even against weak teams is baffling. It is good to see that our overall defense and rebounding have drastically improved during the season.

I don’t care who we played today, or what their record was. All I know, is that our team looked very good today, and we were playing team ball. 25 assists is not numbers we’ve seen in some of our losses. Team playing is what is going to catapult this team back in the top 25. Even without Tamari, we have all the pieces to defeat a Stanford team. It’s all going to come down to how badly this team wants to win, and dig in.

Kellie talked about getting good looks for the shoters. She like two got Tess on her two made three's. presser youtube net ranking lady vols #26 ncaa

Still Think she is still
Trying to find the pace of the game. This is common, but you can see it when she’s on the court. It will come though.
Oh yeah,,,next game
btw,,just read that the Lady Vols' field goal percentage of 84.6% in the third quarter is a school record.

I saw a lot of things today we haven't seen much of in recent years. I saw some screens for shooters (though not many). I saw some midrange shots being taken from the elbow. I saw assists and less one on one ball. I saw Rickea playing better defense and diving for the ball. I saw posts catching entry passes that were sometimes difficult to catch, and I also saw other entry passes that were put right on the money. There was a lot that appeared to me to be different about how we were doing things which gives me hope the coaches are making a lot of adjustments.

I also saw some things we have seen too much of like not closing out on the three pt line. We added a defense where we switch on the perimeter that has been really effective for us and is much like the men play. That has been in the toolbox for a few games now and appears to be new. Not sure why we did not see it much today. And another thing that is still a problem is running too many players in and out of the game so that we get out of rhythm.

Two steps forward and one back will get you there... but we still have a long ways to go.

I was highly entertained Karen.

We seem to be worried about Tennessee beating the South Carolinas and the Stanfords of the world, with the team as is, it is not worth talking about the ladies winning or loses against such powerhouses. What we should be concerned about is beating the other teams on the schedule. I am also concern if KJH can get this team together to at least make the NCAA tournament. If I were KJH I would be working hard to get Holingshed up to speed. She has blocking ability and a few post moves. I know it might not happen but I would love for KJH to ID her eight best ball players and go with that unit. Today against Wright State she went with some lineups that should not see the light of day against good D1 talent. I believe that she was giving a lot of players game experience and KJH is not one for beating a helpless opponent. If she had started Horston, Jackson, Powell, Hollingshed, Darby, or even Walker, she could have beaten Wright State a whole lot worse, baring them not giving up a bunch of threes. Except for their lack of guarding the three in the first half I can’t badmouth KJH. I didn’t necessarily like all the running in and out players.

Walker starting over Powell that is new.

So interested in your comments re: defense.
I meant to mention this after I think last game or one before but then all heck broke loose.
In a recent post game presser, I think VT, Kellie said something like they played virtually all man to man. When they switched to another defense, she did not say what, but after about a minute switched back because it wasn’t working. She then said she and staff? were working on installing another defense that would work with the players ability’s so they had something they felt good switching to. This is a very rough remembrance of what she said so anyone feel free to correct. But I did wonder what some of out higher BB IQ types think would be a good second defense given our roster.

Good thoughts. We will learn more on Wednesday.

By Sunday, during first half, I expect we will not see Su, Pissott, Miles, or Wynn. Little Walker. Thinking Franklin may be limited to 15 minutes or such.

I'll never be mistaken for high IQ but some version of a match up zone could be possible. Keep your speedier defenders ft line extended to the top of the key and try to deny dribble penetration.

Kellie adjusted them at halftime.

In first half, they were leaving their primary assignments to help a teammate. In the second half, they trusted their team and stuff with the assignment.

Number 0 was lighting us up in the first half. At start of second half, Horston got onto her like a glove and that put an end to that business.
