Slow wide bodies. I watched them play Michigan last night. Our press will have them looking for oxygen bottles by the 4th quarter.
As long as we can control the pace, that is. There hav been a few games where we let the opponent control their pace, which should be a no-no: we should only haf to worry about whether our opponent is better at Caldwell System ball, not whether our opponent is better at methodical slow-paced basketball. Our roster probably isn't there to match up with the best teams on their terms, but of course we don't haf to play the game on their terms, we can — and always should — play the game on our terms, at our pace. That's where we thrive, that's where we feast.
We want our power conferences matchups to be more like our UNC scrimmage, where we almost scored 100, and less like the Iowa game, where it took us til the 38th minute to get to 70.
But at least our defense has played really well, both in terms of keeping the opponent from scoring *and* from scoring easy 2s off of effectiv backcort defense. If you credited to the defense all the points we score in transition off steals, we might hav the best defense in the country. Being one of the few teams that scores on our possessions AND your possessions helps a lot when it comes to winning. (and stealing wins in games where we don't shoot and rebound too well, like vs. Iowa)
In that realm, it really does seem like the level of athlete that Caldwell has at her disposal here at Tennessee — compared to Glenville, Marshall — has really taken her defense, and what it can do, to the next level. The WBB world needs to keep an eye on what's cookin' in Knoxville! [even the pros, IMO; do any WNBA teams press hard?]
