Game Thread: Samford v Lady Vols, Tues Nov 5th; Home-FCC; 6:30PM; SEC+ network:,,, Win 101-53

It's so bizarre to read comments stating the Lady Vols have so much to work on, said as though that is somehow an indictment of the team and staff. I would stake my life on the fact that there has never been any team, in any sport, at any level of amateur or professional, whether for girls, for boys, for women or men or animal, that the team was at its peak of perfection for Game One.

Gawd. OF COURSE THEY HAVE STUFF TO WORK ON!!! 😅🤣😂

There were 103 whistles in 40 mins. 57 t.o.s and 46 fouls. That's ugly af to me. I like a game w more flow, but not sure that's possible w a D that lives to disrupt.
I also appreciate the almost dancelike grace of basketball, thinking back to the days of Bill Russell, Walt Frazier, Julius Irving, etc.

But with the ladies game taking place below the rim, that kind of beauty almost has to come from the passing game--and as you've posted before, we're just not in that era anymore. The game seems more influenced by video games, or Marvel movies!

But at least the game still builds (and reveals) character.

I did see a lot of "olé" defense in that first quarter--not exactly a paso doble dance.

If that happens, I will personally apologize to Mafiaboss for even thinking there might be an aspect of the game where the LVs needed to improve. I will gladly admit that they were perfection from start to finish and a reflection of Danny White's divine grace.

Guess I don't agree the passing offense is completely over. It's over around here right now, but I'm interested to see if that's the case w the game in general.. I suspect it will meet in the middle as it always has in the past when this system was tried.

Of course as the players get more athletic and faster the pace will pick up and that's good. But I'm not sure the total chaos and disrupt plan will win the day completely, esp on offense. If so I just hope it can be done without 100 whistles in 40 mins.

Seriously, you think the idea that teams like SC will try to utilize an advantage in the post is so "off the mark."

That was my only critical comment and you can't tolerate that ?

It may be a long season for you unless the LVs go undefeated.
They may try to utilize a height advantage and no doubt there are times they will benefit from it, but Kim’s system is a risk system: put up a high volume of shots, shoot well, esp. 3s, and make the other team catch up. Let them have some 2 point bunnies from bigs.

Im sure CKC ain’t gonna let nobody “have” nothing, out their on the 94. I get that you may shape you team differently and may need to sacrifice height to get there. It will be so interesting to see how this plays in the SEC with the big girls. Pull up those panties, and let’s roll!

I like our chances against size -- IF we are just a tad more quick-handed than our slightly bigger opponents. We know better than just about anyone that size can be beaten with even just a little more quickness. In the past decade we've seen smaller teams with quicker hands and feet best our famously bigger, stronger players.

What I hope will happen is that our players continue to get better and better conditioned, because being in superior condition obviously makes it much easier to keep the pressure on and to keep those arms active. I don't know how many here have played at a high level, but I know through experience how absolutely draining it is to maintain active arms and legs on defense for extended periods. That's why a lot of players won't/can't do it. I feel like our players are learning, through thousands of repetitions, how to maintain a stance, and it will eventually not be nearly as hard as it is right now.

Hopefully at some point, one by one all of our players will have that moment when, all of a sudden they feel invincible because they truly believe there's no opponent in better shape than they are. That'll be unbelievably powerful. Some of them may think they've reached that level already, but they haven't. When they do? Watch out! This team could go deep in the end.

Nothing about the team is small.. saying a team in WBB with 7 players over 6’feet is small is just uninformed about the sport.
Saying they don’t play their height on the floor together at the same time is one thing. But saying the TEAM is small is something completely different and false.
You’re right, I know absolutely nothing about women’s bball🙄

You are very ill-informed. You are the type of poster that thinks they are making a point when in reality you are exposing the fact that you not only are taking a sport too serious but perhaps believe you can take away from all the early success and praise that the LV players, Coach Caldwell, and her staff are receiving right now by posting a lot of nonsense.

How many times in program history has MTSU beaten Tennessee?
Tennessee and Middle Tennessee are on two different levels in this sport.

Also, this team has scored 332 points in three games. Averaging 111 ppg and set a record for steals in the season opener defensively.
Not a single thing can challenge the product on the court and brand of basketball that Coach Caldwell has started to build at the most historic WBB program of all-time.
We are 1-0 so not sure where your 3 games are coming from. Scrimmages are Glorified practices and D-2 exhibition games don't count, they are playing a bunch of players that weren't physically or basketball skill wise able to play D-1. We beat Samford convincingly, but that is a team that would have matched up well against Caldwells Marshall team that was beaten by 50+ points by a power 5 team. If I were coaching against Tennessee, I am bringing the biggest post I have up to catch the ball on the press break with guards sprinting the sidelines to catch and go. The backend of that press is very exposed right now and power 5 coaches and players will expose that all night long. I'm waiting to see how we adjust to this before saying we will be above middle of the pack team..

Right. Just call me a **** starter, but it's the truth. Mid major guards are not going to be able to pass the way power 5 guards will down court and we are seeing way to many uncontested 3s going up because we were unable to defend once the ball made it past half court. That's is the area I'm looking for improvement in tonight. P5 players will knock that shot down or get to the rim.

I get it. I’m withholding judgement with faith they’ll manage to get the process down by conference play. Got a better opponent coming up shortly, in MTSU.

Here’s yer paddle back. 😉

GBO!

The Lady Vols in three pre-season and regular season contest to date have been elite!
Setting a record for home opener games with 9,515 in attendance a number that hadn’t been reached since 2015.
As Coach Lazo says, this ain’t fakey fakey folks!
It’s about to be a track meet at Food City Center!
