Game Thread: Tennessee (15-8, 8-3 SEC) versus No. 1 South Carolina (23-0, 10-0) @ Food City Center, 2/15, 7:00 PM (EST), ESPN

I won’t get into the best team argument, but u play to win I do t believe in moral victories, we had them and gave the game away in my opinion, not about timeouts or tired, we just didn’t hit shots when needed and Spear just had a off night. Everyone on here giving a funeral for when we go to Sc but I think we can win that game just like thought we could win this one, so for the people that think we can’t win, no need to watch. And if u want to know how I feel, go look at my Dennis Green video post.
Hope lives eternal!!

These are not mutually exclusive options, you know. On the plus side, Kellie kept her most competitive line-ups on the floor to the extent possible, though cheap fouls on TK forced her hand a bit.

Since, she is not platooning, finding ways to let her key players get a rest would have been preferred.

I am not sure that a few timeouts would have made much different against SC's depth. The now do to teams what the LVs in the glory days - just keep hitting you with on dang McDs all-american after another.

I am a bit surprised at how negative the postmortem on this game has been. This game was not an Alabama caliber embarrassment. They went toe to toe with the best team in the country for over 3 quarters and had their best defensive intensity of the season.

If they can bottle that, they can take Vandy, LSU, and Texas A&M in this final stretch and get pretty deep into the conference tournament. Playing at the level, a S16 even as a lower seed is not out of the question.

Unfortunately, this team has not been consistent this season so they are going to have to finish against type to make this happen.
It wasn't the depth that they were fighting,,,it was fatigue...at the end of Q3 it was a tie game!
we were equal to their depth until we ran out of gas
Starting the 4th we had four timeouts
I have used timeouts to rest my teams on such occasions where we had to play the top players nearly the whole game.
Kids won't tell you they're tired,,,out of gas,,,you have to see it!

someone on that bench has to have the cochungas to say,,,"Hey coach,,,we need to take a T O and rest those kids".
And if they don't have the nerve to go up to Kellie and tell her this,,,I know someone who does

If we had a center that could dominate and command double teams, that would open up shots for Tess, it’s not totally her fault.
Normally they do. Tennessee had a strong SEC record to date because of the fact that Key takes up so much size inside and few players can handles her 1-on-1. Cardoso could, and completely neutralized her usual post advantage. That let them face guard the shooters with bigger and more athletic players.

Why didn’t Key handle Cardoso to make it even, I thought that would happen since ,last people on here said Key was better than Cardoso during our summer debates.

Because it ended up that Cardoso was a lot better? That’s not a knock on Key…without her, they would have at least two more SEC losses. But Kamila is simply on a different level than her. Everytime Tamari tried to go at her, she was shut down while Kamila was getting all the looks she wanted down low, or sprinting past her for transition buckets.

Amb did you see any of Kamilla playing for Brazil in Americup in Mexico last summer? She was awesome, was the reason Brazil won the gold and US won the silver. That's when I knew she'd be a handful this year.

I agree, TK's success is still situational and Cardoso at this point is just far better. Glad we have TK's help though, she scored 10 against Vandy last time we played them.

I saw the highlights and yeah, definitely thought she looked a lot more assertive than when she was playing next to Boston. That confidence was evident from day 1 this season. Even then, I didn’t think Tamari would get outplayed that decisively, but Kamila was clearly ready for her.

Kinda just being a contrarian aren't ya? Here is how depth works-- one team can sub in more players with minimum drop off whereas the other team has to rely on a core 5 or 6 to stay in the game. Come fourth quarter, players on the deeper team are comparatively less fatigued than the team lacking depth. Games are all about relative advantages.

This discussion reminds me of a line from the movie, Collateral where Tom Cruise plays a hitman who has kidnapped a taxi driver played by Jamie Foxx.

After witnessing Cruise do a hit, Foxx yells, "you just killed that man in cold blood! To which Cruise responds, no it was the bullets and the fall from the balcony that killed him.

well that explains everything
you're getting to be as argumentative as,,,well lets test it
"the moon is made of cheese..."

And do we know the story behind this picture? Based on the crowd it seems misleading to merit intensity. Camera pictures lack context without knowing the moment.
The woman sitting in front us played solitaire on her phone during the entirety of the South Carolina game while her husband occasionally politely clapped. The couple behind us similarly played on their phones. Hard to make inferences about what’s happening on the court based on the actions of small slivers of the crowd. Would be better to make inferences based on the student section.

Common theme…SEC 103 enjoys Facebook during the games. A fast burst/rapid burst camera sequence can capture a simple moment and make it whatever you need of the mass photos taken.

Dear God. Is this the best you can do? True a pic can misrepresent, but so can a story about facebook and game scrollers. Do you need it explained that the pic of intense Kellie is representative of 99% of the crowd and the phone game players are the major exception? I'm telling you that as someone who was there, but I do get that facts died in 2016.

That was two different conversations.

One was about fans being engaged/not engaged the other was about how a picture isn’t always what it seems without context. Which you followed up with a true.

Nah, clear implication that the intense Kellie pic was a misresprentation, bolstered by the facebook story.

But I really don't feel like doing this today, plus it's kind of fun seeing you go for silly scraps like this one.

Like I said I haven’t seen a player on this team be intense in a few years now. As for the Spurs, Coach Popovich was intense and so was finals MVP Tony Parker, it doesn’t have to be your best players but should be one of the best. It’s not about yelling and screaming, it’s about getting your players together and letting them know we will not lose this game, everyone do your job and let’s get it done.
This is from Rickea in the post game pressor:
"This week I've just been getting in extra work and I feel like it showed tonight. But I feel like it wasn't enough," Jackson said. "I'm just going to keep doing that and my teammates are going to continue to hold me accountble. They're going to continue to push me when I'm not working as hard as I can be on the defensive end."

It happens, and I'm sorry it doesn't happen where some fans who crave the display can see it. But if it happens to RJ, you can be assured it happens.
Now, was that just an off night (just like Rickea had an off 2nd half) or did SC's defense have a little something to do with it (coupled with the LVs now expectable deficiencies in running half court offensive sets).
Really just a scoreless 4th qtr for RJ, which of course was a killer. But she had 6 in the 3rd, her scoring was evenly distributed over 3 qtrs. She was clearly gassed in the 4th, also in the end of 3rd qtr interview Dawn said she was going to run an extra body at RJ in the 4th. Which she could do bc our 3 pt shooting and post scoring was non existent.

That said, we need 4 solid qtrs fm her tomorrow.

And Cooper would have played at the 5A level as a 7th or 8th grader—just because she was at a smaller school doesn’t diminish her talent.

At the number 1 girls 5A program in SC right now, they have an 8th grade starter who also played as a 7th grader. And a senior who has played varsity since the 7th grade and is the 5A player of the year. Kiara Croskey is only 5’6” but has speed and is athletic. Wish Tennessee would give her a look.

Off topic, but did you guys see the shot that Caitlin Clark set the NCAA scoring record with last night? She receives a pass
in the back-court, crosses half court line, take ONE dribble into the front court, on the left, and launches a jumper that had to be very close to 30 feet
from the basket and drains it like it was a 12-footer. She was at least six feet behind the 3-line, I'd estimate, which would make it more than 28 feet, if not more. Crazy.
Yep, switched to that game to watch. Big fan, love her game and what she has done for WBB.

She wasn’t gassed, she just didn’t get enough touches and shots.

It's apparently taken Harper 20 years to learn how to manage a roster. She's had this bad habit since she became the UT coach of giving too
many minutes to players who are not capable of helping the team win games. She's always played too many people, and some of clearly too much. Her subbing moves have been head-scratchers for. years. You can't give 15 minutes to players who are not going to help you win and could contribute to a loss. Yes, that means building stamina in your starters and playing them longer. That was one reason we were more competitive against SC, I believe---but we were sure to run out of gas because most of them have not played 30+ minutes all season! Slow learning.

Jackson acknowledging in that comment what has been noticeable since she got here, which is that she has a habit of playing
defense at about three-quarters intensity. Given the defensive struggles we've had over the last 2+ seasons, playing casual defense
is not acceptable, especially because she's capable of being a good defender. But you have to want to. She's also a, what, 4th or 5th year player? No upper-class leader of a team should need teammates to motivate her to play good defense.

I've always said Rickea saves herself for offense. Never going to do anything that might interfer with getting the next basket. So energy devoted to D has been selective, though she can and does dial it up when the situation calls for it. Will definitely have to bring it in the W.

In this article (just the presser from the other night) she's talking about feeling like she was holding back in general for fear of re-injury. For some strange reason, her defense was the first thing that came to mind when she was talking about her teammates helping her get thru and holding her acoountable lol.

The happy outcome is she says she's past that and she has played very good, very hard D lately. The downside of that is exactly like RJ's theory of offensive efficiency says, her offensive ability in the 4th qtr against SC was really hurt by the 38 mins of hard D she played against Watkins.
