Yeah, I agree, it seems strange. The wife was considerably younger, I believe.

Carbon monoxide was my first thought. Still odd that their home wouldn't have sufficient alarms for that tho. Those things are crazy sensitive these days. Even some aerosols can set them off.

I don't know. I pulled that from the deep recess of my brain.

Wasn't there commercials on the radio about 20 years ago about radon gas? That's the extent of my knowledge.

It's dangerous. They say it can cause lung cancer.

Hackman doesn't strike me as someone who would suicide. And I have an even harder time believing he takes his wife and dog in a suicide pact.

I hadn't read this, but were they found in bed? If so, some type of gaseous poisoning seems most likely.
