Geno called out on Parker

I have watched bits and pieces of women's Olympic basketball this year. I don't see how anyone can call this the best Olympic team ever....there is no competition any where in the world. I watched some of the other countries and they are horrid!! The US team does not dominate because they are so good, the others are just simply terrible.

Here is what I would like to see. If we are going to allow athletes to come to the USA and compete in our universities and train here and get the benefits of our programs...... lets have more US athletes seeking dual citizenship and competing in the Olympic for these other countries. They go to other countries and play for pay...why not let them play for these countries in the Olympics. Sure would be much better competition.

The US could easily put three teams in and win all three medals.

Olympic head coach Geno Auriemma knows he doesn't need to placate Catchings, as low-ego an athlete as exists on the planet, but still felt compelled to reach out to the former WNBA MVP.

"Just this morning, I was talking to her about how impressive she's been, because it's not an easy role to be thrust into at this stage of her career," he said. "I think she knew the situation coming in, but still, she's handled it like an unbelievable human being. Forget 'basketball player,' just the unbelievable human being she is.

"Every time I call on her, for those short periods of time, the old Tamika shows up. We talked about it coming out here. I told her 'Look, I don't know how many minutes you're going to get, but they're going to be impactful.'"

Someone asked if Catchings has pushed or politicked for more minutes during a tournament when the U.S. has been typically dominant. Although if you know how Catchings is wired, you know there's absolutely no chance she'd ever do such a thing.

And if you know how Candace is wired, you know there's no chance she'd ever do any of the things you accuse her of either.

That's what this is all about now for Catchings, who is the oldest player on the team. One more gold medal, one final goodbye. She's been an essential part of the U.S. international effort for years, so while some would argue that Candace Parker was a better choice to make the team than Catchings, there's something to be said for the value of being a great teammate.

There's obviously NOTHING to be said about the value of being a great teammate, because if there was then Candace would be on the team, and Taurasi, Griner, McCoughtry, Fowles, and Charles would not.

So what is your point? That Tamika is great and geno is in awe of her? Or that Tamika is great and geno shoved her to the end of the bench?

No one here has argued that. You are the only one that has made it either Candace or either Tamika. That's a false choice. Nice try but that won't fly here.

They whine and accuse everyone of making up lies about Geno yet here this one troll comes making up lies about Parker's character in more attempts to try and tarnish her name because it wants us all here to worship and praise Geno.

Seriously?

So you think that is what this is about?

The statements I posted were not my words but from a sportswriter. Google if you want the truth on what others ( non-Uconn) fans or writers are saying.

That's bull, the world in both men's and women's basketball is better than ever, same deflection you hear from VOL fans whenever any team but the VOL's win the NC.

No, really it's not. The US men can send their "B-Team" to the Olympics and still coast to the gold playing at 80%. The same is true especially for the women. How many foreign women are All-WNBA?

The US has by far a deeper talent pool than any other country. By a mile.

Oh wait if you want to say "better".... Sure I'll say its better...... but still it is "Pathetic"!!! I watch some of these countries put players on the court that would not have made my daughters High School team.

If you're going to cherry-pick quotes, maybe you should get one from Tamika herself:

"I'm not going to lie and say, 'Yeah, it's great'," Catchings said after practice Wednesday in advance of Thursday's game against France. "It's been an adjustment. It has been."

Hardly sounds like a player "having a blast." Yes, Tamika has far too much class to publicly complain. This is about as close as you will see her get calling out Geno's bull****....

Another quote from Geno in that article........when did anyone argue that Parker should be on the team in place of Catch????? Catch belongs there and deserves more minutes than she's been given in her final Olympic Games. If Parker should have replaced anyone, it should have been either BG, Augustus, Delle Donne, or Stewart. Parker was capable of playing any of those positions.

It's honestly sad to see Catch ride the pine as much as she has during these games. By her quotes in the article I get the vibe she's honestly surprised at how few minutes she's been getting.

Me, too. I can't imagine she would have opted to go if she knew she was going to ride the pine. What a waste of her time and talent. The pig says, when she goes in, "...the old Tamika shows up". What's he talking about? Is she injured? Is she ailing? Who else would show up when she goes in but the player she's always been? The player the WNBA coaches vote as the player they'd build a team around and a recent MVP. Why isn't Geno able to figure out how to use Catchings and Parker? (Well, that rhetorical - we know "why") Any other coach would love that "problem".

Please...why the hell would he put her in? Over Maya Moore, Sue Bird, Tina Charles, Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart? Not a chance.

He was right to leave Candace Parker off. She would have really hurt the team in the Gold Medal game against Australia. As we all know, every single forward and center on the Australian team is a bad matchup for Parker. Oh wait, Australia lost to Serbia? Well, I guess the Sparks should waive Parker immediately and sign one of those Serbian super post players that was able to stifle the mighty Australians :whistling:

The context of this decision is muddy and will remain that way. These coaches with this much pedigree have a say. Him and Coach K have a say. So let's stop with it's out of my hands bs.

Parker should have been on this team, period. Don't matter who you left off, she should have been on it, period.....
