Geno on Parker's absence

I must say, linkster, I am curious. Were you at that game and did you observe the recounted behavior, or are you reporting folklore as fact?

I must say, having been around the Lady Vol program since the time to which you refer, I find it hard to believe that Pat Summitt would have countenanced such behavior, nor do I believe that the young ladies who were on the team at that time, several of whom I knew personally, would have engaged in that behavior. But, I must admit, I was not at that game, so I have no personal knowledge. But, at least LVJeff specifically detailed that these were events that he had personally observed, something you did not do.

Jim

Yes, I witnessed it, along with many other fans at the game. It has also been mentioned many times by the UConn players over the years when they talked about that game. ESPN has produced features about that game and this incident has been repeated by players many times over the years. It happened Jim.

Frankly I am always amazed at how fans of wbb make such a big deal over what is just gamesmanship. Trash talk has always been part of the game. In a men's game all that crap is ignored or just used as motivation. But women's fans seem to get bent out of shape over any perceived slight. IMO too many fans, (& I include some UConn fans) feel that "their girls" are innocent madonnas and need to be protected because women are so much more delicate than men. Phooey.

Trash talk has definitely not always been part of the women's game. Either you are very young or have only been exposed to geno's brand of coaching. But I tell you what...I guarantee you if Candace Parker (or any other UT player or Pat if she were still alive) went to Storrs CT and cursed geno out dropping f bombs in full view of people, you most definitely wouldn't call it gamesmanship. You'd call for the state police.

It's rather disingenuous to talk about chemistry being important to winning gold but yet one of your key players from 2012 is left off? You bring in four new players that don't have any chemistry with the bulk of your roster from 2012 but you leave Candace off?

I said this in another post and I will say on this one too.....

These USA Olympic team coaches have a say. And I'm supposed to believe that two of the greatest to coach the men's and women's game (who have won gold before) don't have a say in who they will coach in the Olympics? I'm sure that's part of why they are the coaches because they do get a say. Bullocks...

"That was one of the few issues that arose with Team USA in London in 2012. Star forward Candace Parker tended to go outside the sandbox a little too much, and the offense tended to bog down. Parker was eventually moved to the bench. There was some controversy when Parker was not chosen for the 2016 Olympics, but the reason can be traced back to the sometimes awkward fit Parker had in the offense in London."

The excuses and lies that people come up with in order to justify Geno keeping her off the team are absolutely ridiculous.

This is the most descriptive explanation so far that I have seen, and one that I suspected was the case.

I'm guessing that Candace ran into the same problem that all of us have - no matter how good you are at your job, you still need to keep your bosses happy.

In a different year, Candace plays regardless. But this year, she wasn't needed on a team this stacked, even though she is probably the most talented of the bunch.

PARANOIA?

Deveny is the national NBA writer for the Sporting News and an author of several basketball books. He has zero ties to UConn or Auriemma. What reason would he have to invent "excuses and lies?"

Anyone that watched the 2012 games would be aware that there was "friction" between the staff and Parker.

Because all the stuff he said isn't true. I watched the 2012 games and never saw any friction. She never went "outside the sandbox," whatever that means, and the offense was never bogged down with her in the game. And an awkward fit? I'm not sure how you can call 21 points and 11 rebound on 10-14 shooting an awkward fit.

BASKETBALL USA Women Capture Historic Fifth Straight Olympic Gold Medal With 86 50 Win Over France

"When Candace Parker came in the game, the game changed completely," Auriemma continued. "I thought she was the biggest difference in the game tonight. We all just kind of took that and ran with it. We beat a really good team, but we’re a great team."

His own words. "The biggest difference" in the Gold Medal game. And she wasn't selected this year while still at the top of her game.

As always with the gleeful ucon bunch, they find great joy in coming up with excuses for geeno. It happens that this writer grew up in Lynn,Massachusetts. Could be a geeno fan or ucon women's fan,who knows? In the 2012 Olympics,Candace Parker was named MVP in women's basketball by Eurobasket.com. She had three double doubles in eight games, averaged 10.5 points,7.8 rebounds per game and had 10 blocks and4 steals to go with 16 assists in the eight games. In the Gold Medal game, she had 21 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of playing time, including 8 points in a row when the game was close in the first half. Don't recall any hint of any disharmony during the games, but geeno might have commented after the games, who knows. So,to sum up,geeno kept the reigning MVP off the 2016 team because of his pettiness, and his sycophants are out in force, including, maybe,a writer who grew up in the region.

Another Geno quote - "Candace has a lot of skills," Auriemma said, "and some nights she really tries to use them. Other nights, she forgets the skills she has.

"Luckily for us, tonight she remembered to use them."

Parker was put in the starting lineup in game 2. In game 3 against Turkey she started and scored but 2 points. What happened? After game 3 she was pulled from the starting lineup for the rest of the games. That's when all the mb rumors and talking head comments surfaced about her butting heads with Auriemma.
Incidentally, Catchings started every game.

Catch got pulled from every game, too. She didn't log many minutes in 2012. Candace was MVP. Candace was invited back for 2016 tryouts. Candace was racking up stats & helping Stewart along. Candace was used for the team USA publicity. Candace & Tamika are stellar players who contribute & succeed at every level, but that Geno for some reason is unable to game-plan for. bleh.

Folks what brassie is saying is that geno didn't know how to coach a player with Parker's skill set so he gave up and dumped her.

Exactly, he is an NBA writer based in Boston. I hardly trust him as an authority on women's basketball on any level, especially games played four years ago that he may or may not have even watched. All he is doing is regurgitating information from his sources close to Geno's camp.

Geno doesn't like Parker, stop the presses...

In 2012 a 34 year old Catchings averaged just under 20 minutes a game as a starter in all 8 games. That was more than any bench player and in line with the other starters.

Give it a break already. CP is one of my all time fav players but lets move on. Geno is who he is (define that any way you want). The USA took home the gold. We should all be proud & glad for that. Life is too short, be happy.
