Georgia game will come down to calls by Offensive Coordinators

Sigh. Playcalling has been fine. We’ve missed several open plays, had drops, fumbles, etc. This team has left a ton of points on the field this year. Now there have been some series that were wasted series imho where Heupel was going to burn clock and force the other team to use TOs.

By and large the play calling has been limited bc you’ve got a first year QB and early on we had a sub par Oline.
OK, gotta disagree w you on this one. We have not utilized all of our offensive weapons sufficiently nor been very good, IMO, on play calling. We have called too many overly aggressive plays deep in our OWN territory - and that has killed a good many of our drives. When we have the ball on our side of the fiddy, we need to march to ball straight ahead with runs, short passes, screen plays, quick look in passess to the tight ends, etc. We cannot afford to be greedy on first downs inside our own fiddy, for giving a young QB the weight of now having to gain 10+ yards in two plays, esp knowing that a good defensive coordinator knows that blitzing on 2nd or 3rd and long is going to rattle the QB/team. We must focus on positive yards on first down. Get 3, 4, 5, 6 etc yards and shorten the distance to a first down. Take the pressure off the young team. Then, when we get to the fiddy, open up the lanes a bit and be a bit more innovative. Innovative, not stupid calls.

If our offensive call player/s focus on securing first downs, the TDs will come. However, as we all have seen too many times this year, focusing on TDs (going long) has resulted in too many drive killers. Our kids are great and we have to call plays to their strengths and not put them in the hole any more than the team can withstand.

Most of that has been padding the stats against extremely weak teams. We probably have the most one dimensional zone read there is but I guess we can see why after Saturday.
Really? What's your proof for that? UT still leads the SEC in rushing by a significant margin if you drop the FCS opponents. The two season low points were against UF and OU... comparably weak teams. The "best" D on the schedule so far has been Bama. UT went for 214 and 5 ypc vs them.

And you can call it anything you like. It is simple by design. Heupel is and ALWAYS HAS used formation to open up those simple, inside the tackle runs. Effective is more important than sophistication.

UGA is different for a different reason. Heupel's scheme spreads Ds out and puts the nickel or 3rd LB under pressure. They have to either lean to the run or lean to pass defense. UGA has guys at that position who are fast enough to play one way and still recover to the other. That's a big part of why UT has struggled against UGA on O. UGA isn't quite as good as they've been so we'll see how this one plays out.

Either way, the biggest problem is still the biggest problem. It is even an inhibition to the run game. UT's pass game is not consistent enough.

Everyone knows UT has a really good defense that has come up big in the ranked games this season. Georgia has had problems with their offensive line this year in their big games. With no one knowing if we are going to have Nico back as a starting QB against GA, the win will come down to who calls a better game for each offense. VOLS have to do a better job at 1). Tempo..........UT has really come off the fast starting offense at the first of the year. Lack of tempo seems to be a drive killer by the Vols, along with missed or dropped passes by Nico and the receivers. 2). Offensive play calling seems to be getting more vanilla and predictable by the minute. Joey Halzle has to either call a better game by realizing that SEC coaches have seen most if not all offensive plays by UT, or use plays that were so explosive last year by our receivers that have not even been called yet by Halzle (where Jalin Hyatt lined up tight behind left offensive guard then runs down left side to catch a long pass). We have the talent, but is not being used to the UT receivers' collective abilities. 3). Offensive scheme has go become less predictable. Our scheming has less elusiveness than it did last year. Yes, I know we have a red-shirt freshman in Nico, but at least throw some less predictable schemes including a wildcat package with other backs. Mike Bobo has quite a few schemes with use by their receiving corp than we do. When their offense clicks, they score a ton of points, even against good teams.

It will come down to execution, like every other game. And like every other game, the losing team’s fans will blame play calling. Because most fans don’t get it.
