Georgia may lead the nation in The Art of Choke . Agree?

You really wanna needle a Georgia fan? Remind them that Georgia Tech has a more recent title than they do.

Georgia is, without question, the most underachieving football program in the country since 1980. It isn't even just the football program - their entire athletic department underachieves (why they don't also have great basketball and baseball programs is beyond me).
The academic corruption that Professor Jan Kemp exposed really set their athletic department back. They were elite in the Herschel Walker years in football and on their way to being elite in basketball too. A lot of people forget that they made the Final Four in 1983. Hugh Durham was starting to land the home grown talent... and even stealing Dominique Wilkins from North Carolina and Vern Fleming from New York. The Jan Kemp scandal changed everything. The University Administration purposely de-emphasized athletics in the aftermath of that... although, they still did win the College World Series in 1989.

Historically speaking, Georgia is a good but not great program. We didn't start playing them annually until 1992. The series being tied is more of a function of how excruciatingly poor we have been since 2005... but even since then, we have gotten some pretty good licks in. I still haven't forgotten what Kiffin's team did to them.

My favorite experience’s were 2004 and ‘06. They were different, but very satisfying . ‘04 seems the perfect example for this particular thread. 17 point dogs in Athens, they had just beaten LSU badly the week before and we had just gotten worked by Auburn. They were #3 . Pollack and Greene’s senior year. Damn that was a great Saturday in Athens. Not only did we win, but the UGA coeds were also very kind and courteous that particular weekend. You UGA fans know what I’m talking about. Probably not any of you that just showed up here recently, but I’m sure some of you know a guy who knows a guy who heard some things once.

Sounds like you partook in the local post game festivities... good for you! I do like how they dress for the games. Like they are going to a formal afterward. Kinda sexy.

Georgia doesnt suck or isnt overrated. The Vols cant even beat GA st. Cant line up right. Sign a decent quarter back or even not get beaten by less than 25 pts. To live in the now means 1980 and 1998 are ling gone. Now is the season and where are these two teams? One is at the top the other cant even learn how to do anything. Georgia wont blow this game! Tenn just isnt a balloon that holds air

I will give UGA their due. Athens is a fun town and they do have some great looking scenery and hospitable residents . That weekend was the perfect storm.

It really makes me mad that I left that out. I hold myself to a higher standard than that. Thats inexcusable. Thanks for the heads up.

That gets brought up a lot as an excuse/reason for underachievement. I suppose I can buy that for the rest of Dooley's tenure and perhaps Goff's. I don't really buy it from about the mid-90s on though.

There's no reason why Georgia shouldn't have elite football, basketball, and baseball programs given the proximity to the talent/fan support. They do have a really good football program; the only thing preventing them from entering the elite category is number of championships. If it wasn't for the 1983 season (and that was a while ago), their basketball program would be void of almost any history. For the baseball program's last regional championship to be in 2008 and only have one national championship (1990) given the talent pool they are close to is underachieving. The Atlanta metro area is teeming with talent in all 3 sports; I don't think there's a more talented metro area in the country.

All 3 of those programs should be in the mix for hardware of some sort every year. Only the football program ever is, and they don't actually bring home enough of it.

I’ve seen no reason to talk ish to anybody else, and haven’t for years now.

We’re really in no spot to do so.

But I remember the good ole days of kicking our rivals while they were down. It was glorious.

The only time I've ever been there was '98. I had a good time too (not as good as you, it seems). I talked to some fans before the game who thought they were going to win because we had lost Jamal Lewis the week before and Tee Martin was really struggling. As it turned out, Travis Henry was almost as good and our defense smothered them. Those were some humble people leaving Sanford Stadium that day. Ahhh, the good ole days.

I’d rather be a Vol than a Dawg any day.
And you missed the point.
What’s the different if you get close and don’t win and not having a chance at all? There isn’t one because the outcome is the same.

Would you really be happy having all that talent year after year and having nothing to show for it?
Tennessee has been wasting more talent than UGA. Look at the recruiting rankings and compare what UT has done to what UGA has done.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. UGA is about to take away our coveted "Second most winningest team in the SEC mantra". I'm not sure I'd call that choking.

I would love for Tenn to lose in the SEC championship game. Disappointed yes, but lots of hope for next year. Tenn on the other hand gives hope to winning 6 games, and most don’t care if the bowl is won or lost. I would much rather win11-12 games and lose the champ game than not get there at all. That’s just me.
My problem is I just love SEC football. Been a Tenn fan for over 30 years and still don’t hate the rivals. I just pull for TENN no matter who they play, and I don’t live or die on wins or loses.

I didn't even know that was a mantra... or that it was coveted. Why does every single thread here have to circle back around to Tennessee? There are plenty of threads to discuss how bad Tennessee is. This thread was about Georgia's choking against Alabama the last two years... and they did.

Would we trade places with them? Sure, but that was not the point of the original post.

My confidence in UT scoring a TD is very low, a couple of field goals at best?

Here we were in a nice thread discussing UGA choking and up pops at GA ST reference. Can't we have one fun thread this year?

What does Tennessee lead the nation in, coaching searches, comedy of errors, Ga St type loses, or just puke?

So just to clarify your ridiculous stance, you would rather win 2-5 games a year than go to the SEC championship game or NC game and lose? Again, there is a reason other teams call our fans stupid. This is a perfect example.

Just to take your example, you would rather have not even made a bowl game in 2007 than us winning the East and losing a close game to LSU in the SEC title game? Again, using your ridiculously stupid logic.

Yay! We were the first loser! Yay!
