1. Why would I give the first damn whether or not a guy was a McDonald's All American? Those guy proved by their production they were nothing more than decent players.
2. Meeks played that season with a hernia.

Or maybe Gillespie's system didn't properly utilize their talents. I think it's very debatable. My opinion is that when you have 2 All-SEC Senior guards starting, plus Patrick Patterson, the premier post player in the SEC, and Jodie Meeks, the premier shooter in the SEC, and aren't very good, it is the coach's fault.

How many NCAA Tournaments had Texas A&M participated in the 20 years prior to BCG's arrival in College Station? How may have they played in since?

I tend not to expect much of guys playing with hernias that require surgery at the end of the schedule. If Kentucky "wasn't very good" that year, I don't want to hear anymore crap about what a great product Pearl put on the floor in '07-'08. If Patterson doesn't crack a foot, those two squads finish with identical conference records.

Billy Clyde is the sole reason for our success in Men's Basketball. Prior to that, there was nothing going on after football season ended.

I never once thought Billy would be a good fit for those trigger happy idiots.
Not many people are. Pitino was and Cal is. There aren't many guys who can coach and recruit well enough to win at the level expected in Lexington while simultaneously stroking that fanbase's fragile ego.

There have been some very smart comments made in this thread. However, there are a few that are absolutely, incredibly off base.

Either way, its an arguement I will never take part in again, and I am glad to see others arguing it instead. lol

I just hope the guy gets his life together, whether its owning a bar or coaching again.

Turgeon should send BCG a huge check when he signs his next contract. Either a traditional basketball power is going to come in and sweep him up or A&M is going to have to pay him elite money. Either way, he'll have become rich using Clyde's recruits.

and as long as Turgeon continues along the same path we were headed prior to his arrival, I say pay the man.

had to throw that "owning a bar" gem out there didnt you?

Just because i think its plausible. lol The guy spends 5 or 6 nights a week out in a bar, which I see absolutely nothing wrong with. He could take that 2.9 million and start a hell of a rib/bbq/beer joint in Texas or Oklahoma. And STILL be a coach, of course.

All joking aside though, I think Billy is good at what he does, and how he does it. I just don't think he was prepared for the onslaught of what UK basketball is. You don't get 5 years to recruit at UK, and his stand off-ish nature with the media and others just was not a recipe for success.

I see him bouncing back in a big way, elsewhere in the future.

This is the same debate I had with people when Eddie Sutton left Kentucky. Time proved I was right on that one. I'm confident it will again.

I know they were in the NCAA the year following Gillespie's departure because they had UCLA on the ropes.

and then the refs showed their true colors, which were tacky light blue and baby puke yellow.

Acie had his jersey retired last year. I made sure I went to the game they did it, but Billy's defensive style made us what we are today.

You, not surprisingly, missed the point. Clyde took over a program that hadn't been in the 'AAs since the Great Flood and won exactly 0 conference games prior to his arrival. He proceeded to win 20 games and make the NIT his first season and recruit the players who are now on a 4 year Big Dance appearance streak.

I like the little insult to my intelligence, Hat because I think we have all learned that if we disagree with you, you resort to personal attacks. However, you can say that he took A&M to their first NCAA tourney in 20 yrs all you want. That doesn't change the fact that he helped UK NOT make the NCAA tourney for the first time in 20 yrs. I think it goes without saying that you are in the minority in thinking that he is on everyone's wishlist across the southwest. I'm not saying he is a terrible coach. I'm just saying that he is certainly not anything more than a fair coach at this point. Maybe he will prove me wrong and you right. But I think it is obvious that his tenure at UK was nothing but a failure.

I know it goes without saying that you don't have the first clue what you're talking about on that issue.
