Goins' lack of assists

With Pearl announcing that he plans to look at other options at point, I decided to check Goins' assist stats. It's worse than I imagined.

Alabama 31 minutes - 1 assist
Kentucky 32 minutes - 1 assist
Florida 31 minutes - 0 assists

Total 94 minutes - 2 assists

I would like to know how much time he spends just standing in one spot dribbling!

Lofton would have been just as effective in the half-court. If anything, he is the type of player we need to play well in the half-court... too bad we suck at 3s.

I don't know if I have ever seen Golden dribble out about 20 seconds of shot clock. Therefore he has my vote. Plus I have seen him with some very nice looking passes. Especially earlier in the season when he had the 7 assist game coming off the bench. We need ball movement and Goins just doesn't seem to want to pass it

hmmmm...

one third the minutes, twice the assists compared to Goins. :p Seriously, though, this suggests something interesting. More minutes for Golden usually means more production. In games he's played at least 15 minutes (i.e. games in which he's allowed to get into the flow of the game rather than being yanked out after a couple of minutes) his totals are: 181 minutes, 34 assists, 16 turnovers. Converted to per 40 minutes: 7.5 assists to 3.5 turnovers, whereas Goins' per 40 are: 4.3 assists to 2.6 turnovers.

Also, during the stretch between the Belmont and Memphis games it looked like this:
Golden 192 minutes, 39 assists, 16 turnovers
Goins 296 minutes, 36 assists, 20 turnovers

...right after which Golden's minutes diminished.

I'll quickly say that Goins is miles ahead of Golden on defense; but all of this suggests that if Pearl's going to be giving away point guard minutes, he's already got the guy to give them to.

My thoughts were similar to yours until i watched the end of first florida game again and was confused as to why Golden was subbed in on defense and Goins was put back in on offense. Did tony jones mix up their strengths and weaknesses? Do the coaches secretly know that Golden is not as bad a defender as they want us to believe? I'm just confused... (edit** nevermind answered my own question....Goins was in foul trouble this game)

Maybe Goins isnt the amazing defender we thoguht he was. If Goins doenst possess the ability to think as a "natural" point guard on offense, its no surprise to me that crafty smart point guards are able to take advantage of him on defense.

Think of all the crafty "natural" point guards we have played against and see how well they fared against Goins' amazing defense.

Yeah, Florida's point guard had a terrible time getting past Goins to shoot an uncontested layup that won the game for them. Goins was at least within 6-7 feet of him when he scored. Great defense.

Never said he was amazing. Just said he was miles ahead of Golden. (In fact, I don't think we've had an "amazing" defensive point guard since Tyrone Beaman.) I do think Goins had some SOLID defensive games during the early win streak, though.

Having said all that, I'd like to make my position clear. In a perfect world, or at least in someplace other than "Pearl's World", Golden would have started from day one. I think with that much floor time he'd be unstoppable by now.
