To paint the picture: Co-Anchor Nick Faldo was jokingly saying, in regards to Tiger's dominance, that the other players should gang up on him and rough him up a bit. Tilghman chimed in with 'Yeah, lynch him in the back alley.'
It was clearly a joke, and they moved on.
Enter: Al Sharpton calling for her immediate firing. "Lynching is not murder in general, it's not assault in general," Sharpton said. "It's a specific racial term that this women should be held accountable for. What she said is racist. Whether she's a racist ... is immaterial. She's a broadcaster. The channel has to be accountable to the public."

Tilghman, known to be a class act, has been friends with Tiger for 12 years. He picked her for a recent demonstration that he did using Nike equipment. He has already publicly stated that he knew she didn't mean anything by it: case closed.
The Golf Channel has suspended her for two weeks for the statement.

Thoughts?

for some reason, when Sharpton starts speaking about something I am instantly on the other side. He just wants to hear himself speak.

Poor choice of words but I doubt she meant any harm.

Two definitions:

/lɪntʃ/Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[linch]Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–verb (used with object) to put to death, esp. by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority.
[Origin: 1825–35, Americanism; v. use of lynch in lynch law

]

lynch

(lĭnch) Pronunciation Key
tr.v. lynched, lynch·ing, lynch·es
To execute without due process of law, especially to hang, as by a mob.

I don't see anything about race anywhere in those definitions. I personally think Mr. Sharpton and his partner Mr. Jackson need to mind their own business. If anybody is racist, it's those two clowns.

There is no doubt that she was inciting all of the Whiteys on the PGA tour to lynch Tiger.

That being said, a suspension is inevitable, no matter what the intentions of the remark were. It is the time a place that we live in.

When Sharpton was ranting about it last night, I turned to my wife and said "When did 'lynch' become a racial term? I picture a cowboy at the end of the rope whenever I hear it.."

A professional TV sports anchor should know better than to make a joke about lynching the only African American in golf.

I'm not one for political correctness, and I'm no fan of Al Sharpton, but Tilghman's comment was just plain stupid.

It was a bad choice of words that I'm sure she wanted to take back as soon as she realized what she had said . . . but this controversy is completely ridiculous because if you've seen the clip, it's obvious that it was just somebody using a poor choice of words and there was absolutely no malicious intent.

Sharpton was comparing her to Don Imus yesterday which I think even he knows is a really weak argument to make.

The world will be a better place when Al Sharpton stops talking.

Suspending this woman is stupid too. I am dissappointed with the PGA for doing that. Grow some.

.

why do you refer to kitty as "african-american?"

why does al sharpton, who is black, take offense and come to kitty's defense?

iirc, kitty's father was half black and half asian. kitty's mother was all asian. what does that add up to?

on kitty's application to stanford, he listed his race as "asian."

what asian implication does the word "lynch" have?

those are my thoughts.

As long as weak ass companies keep suspening people who aren't the least bit racist when one of these jokers starts screaming, they'll keep screaming. The Golf Channel should've told him shut his stupud mouth, let her apologize and move on. Remember when Fuzzy made the stupid comment about Tiger's dinner choice for the Master's dinner? People tried to make that a big deal and truth is Tiger and Fuzzy are friends.

Or maybe she just had a Freudian slip. Yeah, that's it ...

Doesn't change the fact that Kelly is HOT!

Two words...Al Sharpton. Once you see who the messenger is, you know what the message is going to be.

Kelly's remark was an innocent slip-of-the-tongue to be sure. Fuzzy Zoeller's comment about Tiger was far worse.

Lynchings were a staple of frontier justice, too. On the dynamics of mob violence and frontier justice, I would recommend watching The Ox-bow Incident w/ Henry Fonda...a pretty good b&w Western.

Fuzzy said something about fried chicken. Fuzzy was just mad because Tiger's choice wasn't high brow enough. I don't think one was worse than the other, just bad choices of words. Just like Al's bad choice of words in saying that it is a specific racial term. These guys are busy trying to ride MLK Jr's coat tail and they worthy to have held him when he peed.

Sharpton feels the need to insert himself into the news story...just like he did in the Don Imus situation. The "lynching" remark was specifically about Tiger. Kelly apologized to Tiger, Tiger didn't make a big deal about it, and the issue should have been over...w/o Al Sharpton doing anything.

I agree.

I really hate Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Always putting their dang noses in everything. What exactly is their job?...Is it to sit around and bi**h and complain when everyone knows they are more racist than half of america. I mean seriously, shut your dang mouth..tiger is cool with the whole situation. I would love to sit and debate with the both of them for one day

It amazes me how naive a lot of people are about words such as "lynch" and "punk".
