Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman Suspended For 'Lynching' Remark

It amazes me how naive a lot of people are about words such as "lynch" and "punk".

It's not naive if the word doesn't evoke certain images for you. Just because it has a meaning for some people, it doesn't follow that said meaning is universal.

Likewise, this whole notion of being punished for using a term that has a different meaning for some group that you were unaware of is BS.

If you didn't associate lynching with AA's and you didn't intend any racial slur or content with your comment there should be no repurcussions.

the fact that Tiger immediately ruled it no story and backed her up proves that she had no intent. After all, he certainly let Zoeller have it a few years ago.

It's only racial if your racial biases consider it that way. Otherwise it's just a word. The word lynch did nothing to the African-American community, idiots in white sheets did. This world is getting entirely too PC if words that have no racial meaning have to be removed from our vocabulary.

If someone is clueless enough to be unaware of the racial connotaions of the term "lynch," they have no business on the public airways.

I'm pretty sure she realizes the connotations of the word and just wishes she had chosen her words better.

there's so many words that can have racial connotations. Start burning books again and someone wake Merriam and Webster up so we can get a new PC only dictionary.

Fuzzy said something about fried chicken. Fuzzy was just mad because Tiger's choice wasn't high brow enough. I don't think one was worse than the other, just bad choices of words.

Fuzzy made those comments after the 1997 Masters in reference to what Tiger may serve at his meal the next year. Its not like he served fried chicken and collards, but he did actually serve hamburgers and fries though.

The whole point is intent or lack thereof.

It would be like if I had a friend whose mother had been murdered years before and one day I got angry at someone in front of him and said "i'd like to kill so and so". Immediately you will feel awful because of knowing that it has a different meaning around him. But I am sure he would immediately understand I had no poor intentions or desire to bring that line of thought up in front of him. Just a poor choice of phrasing.

for once, i'm in entire agreement with you.

Sharpton's JOB is to overreact to this kind of crap, thus getting airtime, thus inflaming his core group of supporters, which translates into more money and political power. I have no doubt that Sharpton has hired a whole team of people to scrutinize the media and page him whenever he needs to call ABC to be pissed off. "Hi, Rev. Shaprton? Yeah....yeah, sorry, you're probably going to need to come back to the city this weekend. We've found a good one."

Do you remember that thread last year when you brought this word up and about 70 consecutive people said they weren't aware of what you claimed was this word's primary meaning? Do you really want to start that up again?

Bottom line .... she was trying to be funny and could have used a better line than she did. People need to freaking get over it and find an something constructive to to do with their time. Better yet why dont we sue her for all her families worth , pistol whip her and ship her to another country for making a light hearted joke on television. This will show people the next time they open their mouth. Get over it. That shipped has sailed many moons ago. Man this kinda crap irks me. Before anyone says it no I am not a racist. :banghead2:

Exactly. It wasn't high brow enough for Fuzzy, Lebowski. Fuzzy said something like "What's next? Fried chicken?" Stupid, but he didn't mean it to be a racial remark against Tiger. Tiger gave him a tongue lashing and Fuzzy apologized and everyone lived happily ever after. Fuzzy wasn't suspended from the tour. I just think it's rediculous you can't say anything anymore without somebody getting their feelings hurt or making a public spectacle of it. Settle down. Everybody.

you all have the Fuzzy story completely wrong. Fuzzy made his remarks to the reporters the year Tiger won, a full year before Tiger hosted the dinner. While walking away from the media Fuzzy said, "tell him not to fix fried chicken next year. . . and collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."

well Dude had it right. But imo, i see a lot more racial connotations with Fuzzy's comments than I do Kelly's.

Yeah, couldn't remember it completely. I forgot he used "they". See there's another word that should be stricken from the dictionary. And still Fuzzy wasn't suspended. Correct?

as i recall, Fuzzy lost his Dunlop sponsorship because of the incident. Tiger left Fuzzy hanging for quite some time before coming back as typical Tiger and saying it wasn't a big deal and that he found it funny.

The key difference is Tiger immediately came to Tilghman's side whereas he let Zoeller sweat it out a while.

Malcolm X pretty decidedly had zero interest in being anything like MLK.

You right. He was headed in a diffrent direction. A miscue on my part. Apologies.

IMO Fuzzy's comment was a lot worse than what Tilghman said. Tilghman chose her words poorly, but I really don't think she intended for her remarks to have a racial overtone. Zoeller on the other hand, intentionally made a racial joke . . . and it wasn't that funny . . . and it was in front of TV cameras without being prompted.

plus, Tilghman is remarkably more attractive than Zoeller.
