Golf: Places to Play

I'd say the nicest courses I played was Blackwolf Run, in Kohler, WI. When I lived in Madison I played both the River Course, and Meadow Course.

Another super course is Wolf Creek, in Mesquite, NV..

When I'm back in Knoxville, I play Centennial, in Oak Ridge, they're affilaited with my home course here in Fayetteville, Stonebridge Meadows.

Orange County National, in particular, is tremendous value that time of year. I mean, you can play the same course the pros played in the finals of Q school a week or so later for $40-ish. That's a heckuva deal when you consider the shape its going to be in at that time.

Yes, it is. That is about the same rice you would pay to play one of the two munies here. They are decent courses, but when comparing them to an upscale Orlando course, it is like apples and, well, something alot worse than apples. And in August, it is way too hot to be playing at either place, so that evens out.

I think probably my first Orlando golf trip will be to Disney, though, simply because I can stay at one resort and play several nice courses without ever having to get in my car. It makes things much easier when travelling.

I'm really looking forward to my trip there. In fact, I kind of pushed for the destination to be Kohler. The charity puts a golf package in the auction every year, and I bought the one to Pinehurst last year, so I had a little bit of influence.

My home course is River Pines here in Atlanta (Alpharetta actually). At least that's my usga/gsga member club. However my favorite up here is Olde Atlanta, but recently affinity golf has come in and purchased like 10 of the clubs I used to play, and made them private. Never played the nice country clubs around here where all of the Braves live.

If you're gonna be back Kohler way, the American Club has added Whistling Straits, which I thought was better (and harder) than either of the Blackwolfs.

Eagle's Pointe is nice, but I've always liked it's sister course - Crescent Pointe - even better. You're right though, there are deals all over that island. I got to play Harbour Town last Fall. We played it all the way back and after about 10 holes it was apparent that it was a REALLY bad idea. :cray:
If you ever get the chance on HH, take the ferry over to Daufuskie Island and play the course at Haig Point. Even better on HH, but not remotely accessible, is the Long Cove Club.

Tennessee - last time I played here it was public accessible in 1988. Stonehenge at Fairfield Glades in Crossville. 100% bent grass all around. Like the living room carpet.

Georgia -
*Lakeview course at Callaway.
*Cateechee Golf Club - Hartwell. Awesome. Better bring the game. Long course. No mercy off the fairways, better stay in them. Even though it's a long course, accuracy is parmaount over distance here. High course and slope rating. 140+ from the tips. Best looking course I've ever played. Impeccably manicured. 1st class facilties.
*Arrowhead Pointe at Richard B. Russel Park, Elberton. Double Awsome. In the fashion of Cateechee and $25 cheaper.
*Highland Walk at Victoria Bryant Park, Royston. Best course for the money. Can play tough or gives very good scores if you play decent round.
*Southern something - Newnan. Was a real good and well manacured links style back in the ealry 90's. Haven't seen it in a long time.
*Jekyll Island - Of Course.

South Carolina -
*Oconee Golf Club - great course for the money. Well kept. Can be challenging, but playable. Not real long.
*Souhtern Hills - Easley. Very nice.

Did you actually like the bent fairways? I thought they were atrocious.

The weather and all of this golf talk finally got me out to the range yesterday.

It was not pretty. How can the body forget so much over such a short winter?

40 yds and in, I'm a disaster. Not sure I've gotten up and down more than about 20% of the time. that, sir, results in many Ls.

I played back when it was new and was Golf Digests 1986 best new courses. Then it was fantastic. I have not seen the course in about 17 years. They were plush. Not taken care of, bent fairways could be a negative. Regionally, bent greens are fine as far south as me (NE GA). It gets tougher on bent the farther south of here you get unless you can put alot ofshade on them. Bent fairways to me is a little more suspect, even at their elevation.

Isle of Palms Ocean course in Charleston is nice, not too difficult, resort course......great views, nice fairways........lots of fun.

a couple of others in Charleston i've played that are fun, Charelseton National, on Patriots point, is pretty good, if not too windy, and Wild Dunes....a little expensive for the quality of the course, but not too shabby.

in Charlotte, i've played several, but i really like Charlotte national......it's nothing fancy, but it's a fairly forgiving course, with just enough challenging holes to keep you interested, but it doesn't beat you down either. Eagle Chase in Marshville is a little nice, and cheaper, but a lot more difficult, plus you gotta really want to get there.

the Divide in Charlotte gets a lot of pub, but i'm not real impressed for the money it takes to play it. I have only played a couple of private courses, River Hills in Rock Hill, SC, very nice course, plenty of challenge, but again, doesn't beat you down. and then there's Raintree, North course......a beat you down tough, tight, long course. not much fun if you suck, which i do.

My favorites are Spring Island and Colleton River both in South Carolina.

Colleton River is a very forgiving joint, but is a good track. What's the catch at Spring Island?

Spring Island is a little more open, but receives about one fourth the play that Colleton receives. Most of the nicer courses around Hilton Head are favorable for the retirees that build them.

I had a chance to play Vahalla about two years ago. That was brutal, but gorgeous.

I've had a couple of invites, but I haven't made Valhalla yet. With Ryder Cup prep upcoming, I don't know how accessible it will be in the near future, even for those with friends. Ceasar's actually has a decent course across the river if you are in the Louisville area.

18 at Valhalla looks awesome on TV. Does it live up?

Ceasars is not bad. Louisville has some decent golf. Valhalla is actually closed for Ryder Cup prep. You are correct.

Have you ever played the Cliffs in Asheville. I am hoping for an opportunity in the near future.

91 from the blacks. Not stellar by any means, but I will take it. I was hitting fairways and a few greens that day, but the three putts did me in.

91 is not all that bad on a course like that though. People don't realize how tough Tour quality courses are.

Considering that I had a caddy reading the greens for me and that I drove the ball pretty well it should have been a little better.

That said, my depth perception on unfamiliar courses makes it terribly difficult for me to club myself, especially from 130 yards and in.
